Chicago lies at the center of the midwest, and a plan is currently being developed to create a high speed rail system connecting major cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Cleveland to facilitate communication and commerce. The station proposal is designed to provide a modern facility with the capability of connecting the incoming traff c of a high speed line with the local commuter traff c to be a true functional gateway to Chicago. The intent of being more than just a station is accomplished through the creation of a river front that contains shops and serves as a location for activity at night with vendors and street performers.

Weinland Park is located in a poverty stricken area of Columbus, OH, in which medical care is diff cult to f nd. My task for the project was to create a pre-natal care clinic that would also help with another aspect of child raising. In my design, in addition to the clinic, I added a garden and teaching center so that when a child is born the parents can be taught about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables and the means to acquire them. The garden area of the project is made of a wood grid where the spaces within can be occupied by wood boards for walking, plants, or grass. These spaces change through out the year based on weather conditions and need by the community.

The Lakota Cultural Center lies at the intersection of two axes, one running North-South, the other running between Wounded Knee and Harneys Peak. Along these two axes an experience is created for the guests visiting the site. The journey begins at the far north end of the site where visitor parking is located. At this point the visitors either walk down to the hotel or ride an electric shuttle, both connecting the visitor to the site. At the hotel, there is a spa to help draw in tourism and to relax the visitors. The journey then continues to the museum, f owing through exhibits. Finally the journey ends at an overlook reconnecting the visitor and the site with the knowledge of the Lakota people.

Due to the prominent nature of the site along the river, it was important that the high rise follow the river curve and def ne the river edge. To accomplish this, the building is moved away from Canal Street to the river edge with the east facade of the building following the curve of the river edge. The building then has several setbacks which help connect the building into the site. The f rst two setbacks match the height of the buildings immediately surrounding the high rise. The later setbacks bring the building to scale with the high rises in the loop, located to the southeast of the site. On the river side, to continue the idea of def ning the river edge, the high speed rail facade wraps around the podium uniting the high rise with the station.

Richland Community College asked BLDD Architects to design an addition to one of their buildings. This addition would contain a restaurant for their culinary school. To approach this design, I studied their current campus buildings for the materiality and then formed the building to act as a cap to the campus as well as using the form to indicate the entrance to the building.

Hendrix College, a small liberal arts college, in Conway, AR approached Kirchner Architecture to remodel an existing bridge on campus that spans the major street which runs adjacent to the campus. I was assigned to create a bridge design that mimics a bridge located on the Vanderbilt University Campus, while using a material palette that ref ected the Hendrix campus.

Hendrix College approached Kirchner Architecture to design a facility for the addition of a football team to their athletic program. After studying the program that Hendrix College presented, I developed a plan to house the program in three buildings, one for the locker rooms for the athletic teams, a training building, and one that serves the student population though the addition of locker rooms and tennis courts.

  • Settlers of Catan Game BoardPersonal ProjectSummer 2011

Settlers of Catan is a board game that was f rst introduced in Germany in 1995 and won the game of the year award in the same year. Since then it has grown in popularity throughout the world. This is a custom board that I designed for myself using balsa wood and plexi-glass. Each of the tiles features a unique design for this board and is stained differently depending on what material the tile represents. Each tile has the edges cut out to allow the inset of roads, towns, and city pieces making the game board easier to play on. The numbers use the same system. The pieces were laser cut using AutoCad f les.

  • Hot Glue LampPersonal Project (made use of a school project)

    Summer 2009

While working with hot gun glue sticks on a project, I noticed that they are opaque when light has not been introduced; however, when they are exposed to light they become translucent. From this observation, I decided to transform my undulating landscape of glue sticks that I designed for a studio project into a lamp. The undulating surface causes the light to be darker and lighter in parts creating a stunning visual effect.
