This large-scale project is aimed to implement the urban re-generation of the center of Charleroi, through the creation of a new urban axis connecting the railway station and the “place Albert Ier”, historical center of the lower district and link with the “Ville Haute” (Upper district).

The project integrates historical buildings, such as a 19th century commercial arcade, a commercial center, apartments, an hotel, a youth hostel, offi ces and under-ground parking, spatially organized around the prolonga-tion of the historical commercial streets of the “Ville Bas-se”.

The architecture uses simple volumes and few materials such as bricks, metal and glass to express the functions it accommodates. The façade on the place Albert Ier is conceived to be a tran-sparent and luminous curtain wall, contributing to the daily and nightly animation of this main public space of the city.

In 2015 the city of Paris launches a call for innovative urban projects, in order to reinvent 23 strategic sites and off er new visions of the city through innovation.

The projects were asked to address innovation in all its di-mensions and reveal cutting-edge solutions for each site.

The two projects of Pershing and Ternes are mixed and dense buildings. Strategically connected to the airports, the universities and the city center, they are aimed to off er a privileged framework to national and international stu-dents, to live, study, encounter, exchange and innovate.

Pershing is conceived as a “toolbox” off ering all the faci-lities and fl exibility of space and functions to accept and sustain innovation.Ternes-Villiers explores the possible links between city and a productive territory, through an hyper-density program of student housing and facilities, that off er alternative spa-ces for urban farming.

The city of Liege is situated in the valley of the river Meuse near the German and Dutch borders, and is considered to be the principal economic and cultural hub in the Walloonregion. In 2011, the city’s station was upgraded to include the HST (high speed trains) between Brussels and Cologne. This modernisation was awarded to renowned architect Santia-go Calatrava, attracting international attention to the city.

The local authority decided to use this opportunity to de-velop the City project 2015, a broad strategy with activities that would regenerate the district surrounding the station and re-attract new population to this once popular area of the city.

The projet involves the construction of an eco-neighbou-rhood formed by a mix of offi ces, housing and local shops along the new urban promenade between the station and the Meuse River bank.It off eres high quality housing around shared green areas, with an emphasis to pedestrian lanes, green spaces and meeting points. The offi ces and commerces are aimed to improve the existing attractivity of the area.

Torre Baró is a village nestled in a corner of Barcelona whe-re the River Besos meets Collserola park. The town is one born out of necessity, an auto-constructed village forced into being by economic and cultural pressures. Recently, the village has been integrated into the urban strategic plan of Barcelona and several projects are planned to pre-serve and revitalize this important corner of the city.

The aim of the IAAC summer school is to fi nd strategies to make Torre Baro able to supply all of its necessary energy.

The project started with the analysis of the site, composed by self-constructed bloc builted on the mountain’s slope, on both sides of semi-private stairs, that have diff erents shapes and width. We focused on the stair-sisthem: bot the substitution of the public street, and a social space. Instead of thinking of a single device for every residential unit, we immagined a common systhem for energy production to be place on the common stair.

The prototype is designed to use the wind always present on site and enhace it with the Ventury eff ect, in order to produce electrical energy. But we were also intereste din the diff erent possibility of composing the single element, creating a landmark, occupying the space and denoncing

its common function.

NEO is the urban regeneration plan to exploit the huge potential of the Atomium’s area in Brussels. On the Heysel plateau, the city of Brussels whishes to develop a high qua-lity mixed-use district including a shopping center, leisure, housing and exemplary public transportation which will set a new benchmark in urban redevelopment.

The LIVING NATIONS project’s strategy is to extend the Heysel plateau, in order to connect all the functions of the site with a continuous and animated public space. The commercial center is located underneath the Plateau and connected to the street level; the residences are loca-ted upon it and can profi t of opened views and optimized orientation. The leisure activities including the Biodôme, a multiplex, restaurants and publics functions are distributed along the rooftop promenade and around the major squa-re Living Culture, and connected both with the future Con-vention Center and to Room 58, giant sculpture for artistic performances.

Since the beginning of the practice, ANMA focused on envi-ronmental architecture and the refl ection about “another way of building”. A good project must be designed accor-ding to the characteristics of the site and its potentials, to have a proper integration reinforcing its specifi cities.

The purpose of the research was to study the most innova-tors works in order to highlight the good ideas (in energy economy, energy production and materials), to compare the results and constitute a database and, above all, to defi ne a chart of the “environmental strategy” for future works.

The complex for the French Ministry of Defence will bring together all of the main bodies of the French armed for-ces ( Army, Air force, Navy) on one site. The new buildings (145,000 m2 ) will have the capacity for 9,300 civilian and military staff . The Ministry will be installed at the “French Pentagon” in 2015, constituting a new eco-district in the Greater Paris area.

The project was imagined as an external enclosure pro-tecting a large internal garden, and a ramifi ed plan of buildings on stilts under a vast origami-like roof. This confi guration allowed answering at the same time to the security and the complex interconnec-tions and fl exibility requirements of the program. The building’s external façade plays with horizontal slat, providing both intimacy and transparency.

The building has been designed as a natural machi-ne, able to function autonomously for 10 months a year: the roof culminates in three major chimneys, to ensure natural cooling; 7000m2 of roofi ng will harvest solar energy, the largest solar roof in Paris. 80% of the heating, cooling and hot water requirements will be produced on site.

The Marseille-Euroméditerranée urban renewal and eco-nomic development project was initiated during this same time. As the largest urban renewal project in sou-thern Europe, it commits to renovating a 480-hectare area in the heart of the City of Marseilles, between the

commercial harbor, the Old Port and the TGV station.

Enhaced in late 2007 by the French Prime Minister, the Euroméditerranée extension includes an area of 169 hec-tares bordered by the Cap Pinède and Les Arnavaux to the north, the village of Canet to the east and Bougain-ville/ the CMA Tower to the south. Only 3,000 people live in this area, mainly made up of major rights-of-way such as the Canet and Arenc train stations. The use of these spaces will be optimized to prevent urban sprawl.

A mixed-use, experimental eco-neighborhood, the go-als for the extension are ambitious. They include a dou-bling in size of Marseille’s business district, new hou-sing, an urban park and major new facilities to develop and maintain the metropolitan area’s attractiveness.

The new 12ème Escadre d’Aviation district is located on a railway wasteland that spans approximately 19 ha.The project proposes to develop a park that lines the railway tracks. This green promenade enables pedestrian and cycle access to the city centre. The grid of the new district naturally prolongs the existing street network, creating blocks measuring 100m to 150m long. The buildings are built perpendicular to the main stre-et in order to favour a north-south orientation. Each block corresponds to a unit of approximately 100 dwellings and each unit features a communal planted courtyard, beneath which there is space for all the resi-dents’ cars to be parked.Three types of housing are provided: public housing along Rue de la 12ème Escadre d’Aviation, which forms a conti-nual façade; a mix of private and social housing on either side of the planted courtyards; and individual housing in a strip running alongside the park. All the housing will be ecologically designed with south-facing living rooms, inter-climatic conservatories for the houses, outside insulation, solar captors on the roofs and rainwater collection, the aim being to have it classifi ed as “low-energy” housing. 6 passive buildings articulated the entry points to the new district.

The Maison de la Recherche Euroméditerranéenne and the Institut Ingémédia are strategically located at the heart of the Toulon Provence Méditerrannée urban area (TPM).The building stands at the angle that mar-ks the access viewpoint towards the Porte d’I-talie, which is fl anked by planted ramparts and stands as a symbolic image of the city entrance. The urban project is based on a large pedestrian walk that serves the diff erent university entities, the existing facilities, and the new Maison de la Recherche (Research Centre). This walk is connected to Place Bir-Hakeim—re-confi gured in order to enable clear distinction between car fl ow, pedestrian pathways and the TCSP (reserved public transport area). The space freed up by vehicles is treated as an urban square, thus qualifying the en-trance to the city. The area is spacious enough to ena-ble either a mineral or a green treatment, which would fi t in with sports fi elds while maintaining continuity with the walk and framing the view of the Porte d’Italie. The “Maison de la Recherche-Institut Ingémédia” complex is composed of a base surmounted by de-tached blocks standing above it: three identical whi-te volumes pierced with large openings and top-ped with facetted roofs for natural ventilation.

The site is cutted in two by the railway, that divide the ur-ban part, connected to the city center, and the rest, a vast no man’s land.

The challenge was to connect this two parts of the city with a coherent project, without denying the diff erences, but componing them in a unicum.

The project is build on a main pedestrian axis running from east to west, and crossing the railway, and on a link going from north to south, both pedestrian and cycling lane.

“CENTRO DIREZIONALE” STATION

Metro station and urban regeneration of the “Tribunali” district Napoli, (IT)

Diploma’s Thesis, achieved with distinction

The project was aimed to the renewal of the area “Tribuna-li” of Naples, to be done through the construction of a new metro station committed to EMBT by the city of Naples, as a part of the general requalifi cation of Napoli’s metro line and stations.

The interest of the chosen area was also to apply the ur-ban renewal process to a project of Kenzo Tange of 1980, which was already aimed to revitalize this part of Naples.

With this premises, the thesis was elaborated on 3 diff erent scales: the urban scale of strategic planning of the public transportation of Naples, the temporal scale of the dialog with the intention of Tange’s project, and the scale of the architectural project, aimed to summarize all the issues and strategies, and make them a concrete part of the city.

LA BARRIERE, MOBILIER URBAIN

Projet universitaire de Mobilier urbain évolutif pour une station balnéaireProgramme: Réfl échir à la limite du littoral de Rimini.

This small, funny project refl ects on the Riviera littoral fun-ctionning.Infact, the zone is crowlded in summer but deserted in win-ter.During that period, the owners of the bath sites close them with barriers, to avoid the sand to be blowed away. So doing, they actually cut the sea from the city.

The project propose a modular systhem that off ers mul-tiple confi gurations, in order to adapt to both winter and summer situations: in summer it is a bench, or a walkway; in winter it is raised as a protection towards the wind, but still allowing the views to the sea.
