Welcome to the March issue . March brings the long awaitedfirstdayofspring. However, asafriendoncesaid, “here in Michigan, we have spring—we just don’t

observe it. A slight lessening of winter is the best we can expect.”MichaelCohen is as close aswe’re likely to get to thefirst

robin of spring . He has taken over as chair of the annual Swap Meet.Thisyear,it’sonApril29,whichshouldincreasethelikeli-hood of some spring-like weather . Thank you, Dave Burton, for all the years you ran this event . As before, Porsche of Farmington Hills will host this event .

Michael had the good sense to escape to Florida in January . In this issue, he has an excellent recap of his visit to the Cars & Coffee event at Sun Coast Porsche . As you’ll see, it brought out a wide variety of interesting cars .

Closer to home, member Ben Salvador has written an inter-esting article about his impressive collection of model cars . We appreciate getting stories and/or photos from our members and encourage you to submit yours .

To facilitate your planning and to encourage your attendance, we have announcements in this issue for all the events through May .

InadditiontotheSwapMeet,therewillagainbea“DE101”classroom session at Waterford Hills . That’s scheduled for Sun-day,April23.Ifyouhaveeverconsideredsigningup,orifyou’rejust curious, this event is for you . Our instructors will answer your questions, tell you how to prepare and take you through a typical day at the track . Weather permitting, it will include walking the track with an instructor who will explain the nuances of each sec-tion and how to handle it .

To welcome our newer members, Greg Gallagher will be hosting a New Member Event on April 22 . All members are welcome.Detailsarestillbeingfinalizedandwillbeprovidedin our next issue .

Then on Friday,May 12, theDE season kicks offwith ourannual Beginner’s Day at Waterford Hills . Both new and expe-rienced DE students are welcome anytime, but on this day, we encourage new students to come out and experience DE . Try it; you’ll like it!

Thenextday,May13,Munk’sMotorswillhosttheirannualDevil’s in the Details event . This popular event is all about car care and you can learn from a host of experts—including some of the many members who have won trophies at the Parade Con-cours . Lunch will be provided .

OnSaturday,May20,wewillhostourfifthannualStreetSur-vival School for teens . This is a national program designed to

address the fact the motor vehicle accidents are the number one killer of teenagers . Street Survival School teaches teens the skills needed to handle the all too common situations where safe driving requires immediate corrective action . Arguably, Street Survival is one of the most important things we do all year . If you know any teenswhowouldbenefit fromthis“handson”safedrivingprogram, please encourage them to sign up .

Also, we need volunteers to help run this event—in car coach-es, course marshals and administration . Please see the announce-ment in this issue .

OnSunday,May21,GretusHoogestraatwill leaduson theSpring Tour . Please save the date . Details will be provided in next month’s issue .

Asyoucansee, weliterallyhave“somethingforeveryone.”We encourage you to come out and participate in an event . We’re confidentthatyouwillenjoytheevent, yourcarandthecompanyof fellow Porsche enthusiasts . Remember, “It’s not just the cars; it’s the people!”

Like many things, technology is both good and bad . Great when it works, frustrating and aggravating when it fails us . We had a major glitch with the Member Anniversaries in the previous issue . They have been corrected and appear in this issue, along with the anniversaries for March . We apologize for not having caught this problem before we went to print .

Congratulations to all who have an anniversary . Membership is the lifeblood of any organization and your membership is ap-preciated .

We are delighted to welcome two new advertisers—Andree Riley of Keller Williams Realty in Birmingham, MI and the Flor-ida Keys and Autocore Performance Group in Waterford, MI . An-dree is a member of SEM/PCA and Autocore is owned by another member, Steve Cramer . Please support them and all our advertis-ers . They make this magazine possible .

If you are a member with a business or professional corpora-tion, we would greatly appreciate your becoming an advertiser . Just a business card ad will get your name in front of more than 1,000 people in SEM/PCA, plus all the “pass along” readerswho get our publication from other businesses . Porsche owners have some of the most impressive demographics in the entire auto industry .

As always, your comments, photos and stories are welcome . You can help make this magazine even better . We will be glad to help you .

bOarD Meetings

Board meetings are typically held on the first Thursday of the month at various locations.

Please note: for anyone interested in attending future Board meet-ings, please contact any board member.

As we continue through winter, many of us miss the thrill of driv-

ing our favorite Porsche . So, we pursue other activities to pass the time until “driving sea-son”returns.Idolotsofdown-hill skiing and snowmobiling—both great pastimes for fulfill-ing my need for speed—and spend time with great friends and family . Which leads me to the focus of this month’s ar-ticle, one of the key aspects of Porsche:“It’sthePeople.”

Some of the best friendships of my life have been formed with members of our club . Ev-erything from ski trips, snow-mobile trips, and mountain bike rides to some great car event trips (with and withoutourowncars):

• Ofcourse, thereisPorscheParade, which brings own-ers from around the country to a fantastic location each year .

• Therearealsothetravelstovarioustracksacrossthecountrywhere several members race .

• Andspeakingofracing,tripstotheRolex24HoursatDay-tonaand theF1racesat IndyandAustinarealwaysmoreenjoyable with friends from the club .

Locally, we enjoy some great weekends on the lake with peo-ple I’ve met from the club—always fun to get together when we share so many common interests . If you haven’t yet been able to join us for any of the various club events, I urge you to come out and try some . We offer something for everyone: from driving tours and track days to picnics, BBQ’s and dinners . Also, con-sider volunteering at an event—there’s no better way to meet and get to know our members . Come join us, meet our outstanding members and develop some great friendships with people that love the things you love to do . As a board member for many years,I’veseenfirst-handthatthosethatgetinvolved(whetherattendingorhelpingrunanevent)trulyenjoytheactivitiesandthe camaraderie .

Please continue to share ideas for new/different events— we want to ensure everyone is getting what they want from this great club .

With the spring season right around the corner, keep an eye out for some of our events coming up . We’ve got the Tech Session at Autocore(oneofournewadvertisers)onMarch25th.TheSwapMeetisApril29thatPorscheofFarmingtonHills—whichneverfailstohavesomeofthoserealhard-to-findparts—ANDyou’reassured of the chance to talk about the cars and parts of the cars wealllove.TheHigh-PerformanceDriver’sEducation(HPDE)101classroomeventonApril9thhelpsprepareyouforon-trackdriving by giving you the low-down on the basics and what to expect at your first day at the track. This event will have youreadyforourfirstHPDEonMay12thatWaterfordHillsRace-way . We’ll again have four HPDE’s from May through September this year—and be assured we will assign you to a group of drivers with similar track experience and skills .

Meanwhile, have a great winter—and I hope to see you on the slopes, trails, track or street!

I chose towearmy Porsche baseballcap, which was an immediate welcome card and conversation

the 48 Hours of Sebring in early February where he would be instructing . Unfortu-nately, our vacation would be over by then . Porsche CollectingIn Scale

STORY & PHOTOS BY BEN SALVADOR

I boughtmyfirstmodelcarfor$3.50atage17.Itwasa1/43rd scaleversionof the1970Daytonawinning#2GulfPorsche917K.Thatwasbefore I became a

Today I have approximately 1,600models on displayand at least as many in storage . Two thirds of the models on display are Porsches . Many are reminders of my earliest memories of Porsches that turned me into a Porschephile . Someof thoseare: (1)The911Carrera2.7RS -acar Ifirstsawbeingdrivenbyanacquaintance.Thecar’ssquatstanceandmuffledexhaustrumblecaughtmyattention.ItwasthefirstPorscheIlustedafter.(2)The1973Daytonawinning#59Brumossponsored911CarreraRS/RSR-mymemory of this car is not of the car itself but of a bill-board image, approximately 5X life-size, celebrating the win.Thisbillboardwason“thestrip”onSunsetBoulevardin Beverly Hills, California . My collection includes the earliest Porsches: the Lohner-Porsche electric car, some tractors, the Type 64 (1939 Berlin-Romeracer),356s,550s,718s,597Jagdwagensandmore.I also have several single seaters: 718 Formula 2s, 804Formula 1s, Interscope Indy cars,March-PorscheCARTracers, TAG-Porsche-powered McLaren and Footwork moderneraFormula1cars.“CelebrityPorsches”areavail-ablesuchasJamesDean’s550Spyder,JanisJoplin’s356SCCabriolet, a couple ofMagnusWalker’s 911s, SteveMcQueen’s911SandHerbertvonKarajan’s911Turbo.

September18th.We met in the parking lot of Laurel Park Mall in Livonia and

traveled west to Whitmore Lake via North Territorial Road . Our parade of Porsche’s returned eastward, then north through Mil-ford and eventually south through Wixom . We ended back at the mall for dinner at Sweet Lorraine’s in the Livonia Marriott . Much of the credit goes to President Howard Gilson, because this route borrowedliberallyfromadrivehehostedin2009.Inhonorofthis

being a birthday celebration, Gilson Motorsport’s also provided numerous presents as door prizes .

During the tour, former members of SEM/PCA were out for a Sunday drive in their Porsche and spotted the caravan of touring Porsche’s . They joined in and ended up at dinner with us .

The region party took over most of Sweet Lorraine’s for din-ner . Considerable socializing took place throughout the restaurant and all seemed to enjoy the company of fellow enthusiasts .

Last month I received an email from Mr . Diethard Doe-brich . He lives in Münster, Germany, which is about 2 Autobahn hours south of my home town Emden . I don’t

know this man, so why did he contact me? He collects car club pins in general, Porsche Club pins in particular, and is asking if some of our SEM/PCA members have some extra pins they could share or trade with him .

Here the story about his hobby: It all started in the 60swhenmyDadbought amoped “NSuQuickly” and as a give-away he got a NSU-needle . Nobody paid attention to it .

Years later I discovered this needle again and started collect-ing needles . Pins weren’t available then . I generally collected needles of car-factories, for example AUDI, FORD, OPEL, MERCEDES-BENZ, VW and last but not least PORSCHE . As time went by pins became more and more available . There were pins of groceries, different kind of beers and of COCA COLA, of course!

I started collectingmainly Porsche-pins (and I still do so!).Therefore I travelled to several fairs and auto shows like the IAA Frankfurt, the TECHNO-CLASSICA in Essen and the Motor-

Diethard Doebrich with PART of his collection

Show Essen . On eBay pins are offered as well . Also other collec-tors traded pins with me, even a few guys from the PCA-Regions .

Duringallthisyears(I’m74yearsoldnow)I’vegotneedlesand mainly pins from GERMANY, but also from AUSTRA-LIA - AUSTRIA - BAHRAIN - CANADA - CHINA - CY-PRUS - DENMARK - EL SALVADOR - FINLAND - FRANCE - GREAT-BRITAIN - GUATEMALA - HAWAII - HOLLAND - HONGKONG - ITALY - JAPAN - JORDAN - NORWAY - OMAN - SINGAPORE - SOUTH-AFRICA - SPAIN - SVERIGE - SWITZERLAND - TAIWAN - and U .S .A .

If you discover pins of from PCA-Clubs, Porsche-Parade, Es-cape, Fiesta del Porsche, West Coast Holiday, East Coast Holiday, 356Registry or PorscheReunion, Iwould be delighted if youremembertheoldmanoverseas!!!”

TECH TALK

DEAD BATTERY2003 911 Carrera Cabriolet Mileage: 31 000

Q: I keep my battery connected to a trickle charger in the winter, but it recently died. I replaced the alternator 2 years ago, but the battery is 5+ years old. Should 996 batteries be replaced after a certain amount of time as part of regular maintenance?

A: You may have noticed that most car batteries come with a 4- or 5-year limited warranty. Guess what the mean time before failure is? About 5.5 to 6 years. You are right on schedule for a new battery. I like the Inter-state batteries if you can get them, otherwise a Sears DieHard is still a good option. The US-market batteries still seem better than the original.

A: As a new Porsche owner I wanted to keep my 996 original. The original battery died after about 5 years. I replaced it with a OEM German battery from the local Porsche dealer (Very Expensive). It lasted about a year. I replaced that with a NAPA replacement (not so expen-sive). It was virtually an exact duplicate of the original except for the name. It’s been in the car for about 3 years and is still going strong. Stay away from OEM-go with NAPA.

A: I have an Interstate battery and it has lasted over 5 years. My first battery was a Porsche battery and had a warranty but the dealer told me I didn›t drive the car enough miles when I lost it in about a year, the warranty was no good. I was advised by a Porsche tech to buy an Interstate because it matters not how many miles you drive a year.

A: I have a 2007 C4. The original battery failed a load test at about the 2-3 year mark even though I used the factory Porsche trickle charger. I replaced the bat-tery with the factory OEM unit and got rid of the cheap Porsche trickle charger. I now use a Battery Minder 2000 series by VDC electronics which is ten times the unit. The new battery is now roughly 5 years old and doing fine. Important: Use a charger all year round and never leave the key in the ignition unless you pull it out far. enough that you hear a click in the steering column.

944 WHEEL & TIRE SIZESModel: 944, Year:1983, Mileage:47000, Type of use:Street use only

Q: I have owned my 1983 944 since new. I have 15 inch Fuchs forged alloy wheels. The rear wheels are wider than the front wheels. I think the front wheels are 7 J X 15 and I think the rears are 8 J X 15 but I am not sure. My car came with the N69 option group. I have the origi-nal window sticker but it does not give me any specific information about wheel size. Can you please help me to determine the wheel size and what tire size I need to replace the OEM tires?

A: Yes, your factory Fuchs are quite likely 7x15 in front and 8x15 in the rear. You can verify that by the markings on the inside of one of the spokes. There should be an embossing that reads (for example) 7JX15.As for tires to be mounted, your factory owner manual should specify 215-60/15 for both front and rear. I agree with that rec-ommendation. That size is still available for street from several tire manufacturers.

NEED NEW SUMMER TIRES2012 911 Targa 4S Mileage: 36,000

Q: I need new summer tires for my 2012 911 targa 4S, now have Pirelli Zeros, heard that best tire is Michelin Pilot Sport 2. It seems that they are being replaced by Pilot Super Sport. Which is better, and is there another tire I should consider?

A: Tire choice can be a very personal decision and can change depending upon how you drive and what you want out of your tires. Michelin is my personal favorite for street tires on these cars; they wear very well and are relatively quiet while offering great performance. The Pilot Super Sport is not a factory approved, N-rated tire for some Porsche models but it is for others. Many of our clients that have used the Pilot Super Sports are very im-pressed with them. Many of them state the Super Sports out-handle and out-last the Pilot Sport 2 tires. I don’t think you could go wrong with either Michelin tire but I think I would personally lean toward the Super Sport based on my customers input.

When TiresWere Skinny…

There is a classic description of racing in the very early years that goes, “When tires were skinny and drivers were fat.” If you look at those early photo-

graphs you will see that was indeed the description of the famous race drivers and their cars . If you haven’t noticed lately the description is exactly the opposite today . All of the top echelon race drivers are diminutive, more like horse jockeys, and the tires on their race cars have become very wide.Whyisthissignificant?Itpaintsaverydifferentpic-ture for anyone aspiring to go racing . It also paints a pic-ture increasingly out of touch with those who follow racing . Could that possibly be what is disenchanting race fans and turning them to other sports?

Let’s turn this discussion closer to home with our own Porsches . I am not going to take this to a personal level be-cause rest assured I have never in my life been described as diminutive . In fact, there have been many cars that I would havelovedtodriveexceptIflatoutdon’tfitinthem.Veryearly on I learned that I could rule out most English cars . MyfirstsportscarwassupposedtobeaLotusEuropabutthe salesman at The Sports Car Exchange would not let meeventrytositinone.Fortunately,IdidfitnicelyintoaPorsche914-6,becausemostGermancarsweredesignedtofitAmericansizedpeople.I’veneverfoundaPorschethat I couldnot comfortablyfit into. But tire sizes areadifferent story .

Anyone who has owned a Porsche from those early years knows how small tires were on those cars . Cars in general had very narrow tires and rather tall side walls . As racing tires evolved towide and low profile the street tires fol-lowedbutitwasaslowevolution.Tiresfromthe‘50’sand‘60’sandeven‘70’swereaboutaswideastoday’smotorcy-cletireorspacesaversparetire.Tirediametersof15incheswere considered to be big and ordinary cars normally were fitted with 13-inch diameter wheels. My early Porscheswerefittedwithhighperformance165by15 tireswith acontactpatchofaboutfourincheswide.My1972911Ehadmonstersized185by15inchPirelliCN36tireswithacon-tact patch of about three inches because of their rounded profile.IwouldliketoseehowsmugthecurrentGT3ownerwouldbeiftheircarwasfittedwithasetofthosetires.Just

one of theGT3 rear tires has acontact patch equal to a whole setofCN36tires.Asonefamousadvertisement spells it out, there is no performance without con-trol, meaning without big sticky tires you might as well be driv-ing a Prius with low rolling re-sistance donuts .

Racing became a serious size issue for me . I may have fan-cied myself driving a svelte Lo-tus Formula Ford but those cars were designed around a driver of about5foot7inches,ortheaveragesizeofmostEnglishmen.Inmyprime,meaningmuchmorefitthanIamcur-rently, I could squeeze into a Jim Russell school Crossle FormulaFord.Thelast timeIdroveaFormula3carwasover a decade ago . A very dear friend who was much short-erthanIamusedtodriveFormulaV,SuperVandfinallyFormula SCCA until his physical dimensions became an issue . He offered me a ride in his Lynx Formula Super V and I dearly wanted to take him up on that offer . With the body work off I squeezed my frame into the narrow tub of the car and forced my knees under the dash . All seemed well until we realized that my feet were past the pedals and firmlyagainstthefrontbulkhead.Thecarwasengineeredaround professional racer John Kalagian who was jockey sized.EvenNASCARstockcarscanposeaproblem.Ifitin the Track Time School’s Citgo Dodge Avenger set up for Sterling Marlin who happens to be about my size . Though I couldnotfitinthePenskeFordThunderbirdofRustyWal-lace who is much shorter than Sterling Marlin . Soasmostthingsdefinedbythepassageoftime, thereis

no going back to the early days of skinny tires and I doubt any of us would want to . If your favorite car happens to be a1972911andthebiggesttiresyouhaveare215by15youjust have to buck up and admit the limitations . You may haveasmuchormorefunthanthatfellowinthenewGT3but there is no hope at all that talent can make up the differ-ences between tires .

Around The Zone

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,As we are all looking forward to the arrival of spring, many

regions are offering tech sessions to get our cars prepped for the driving season . In addition, regions have found ways to encour-age PCA camaraderie during these winter months . There have been a number of Holiday Parties, membership dinners, new member events and Saturday Breakfasts . I recently had the op-portunity to travel to South Bend to attend Michiana Region’s Meet the Member Winter Party . The very well attended event was held at an Austrian restaurant was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and included a car themed gift exchange . I also attend-ed Eastern Buckeye Region’s Winter Party held at the beautiful homeofRonandSharonRobinson.Theeveningwasfilledwithwonderful food and beverages, lively conversation, an “Ugly ChristmasSweater”contest, andthepresentationoftheregion’sEnthusiast of the Year award .

important goal . Exciting events are being planned in your region and throughout the zone, and even if your car is currently in stor-age, PCA has a wide variety of activities for you .

As the weather continues to improve, and events are added to the region calendars, please remember to frequently check your inboxes, region’s newsletter and website . Many regions’ events calendars are posted on the Events page of the Zone 4 website http://zone4 .pca .org . Visit the website for the latest details on many of the events that are being planned .
