    The concept behind the Cayman

    models is the Le Mans Coupe,

    a sport coupe designed in

    1953 speciically or thislegendary race and based on

    the 550 Spyder. Its mid-engine

    layout is what made this car

    special. The cars low center o

    gravity gave it tremendous agility

    and cornering dynamics. From

    this one basic idea came great

    success, and with this success

    our experience grew. The result?

    Two sophisticated sports cars.

    The Cayman and the Cayman S.

    Their uncompromising

    perormance is generated by

    two engine developments,

    which stand out above all or

    their lightweight construction,

    power output, and eiciency.

    The Cayman has a 2.9-liter

    lat-six engine with a power

    output o 265 horsepower.

    Even more impressive are

    the perormance values o

    the Cayman S with Direct Fuel

    Injection (DFI). The air/fuel

    mixture is preparedentirely

    in the combustion chamberater having been metered and

    injected directly, with millisecond

    precision. This means even

    more power and torque. To

    express this in igures, its 3.4-

    liter lat-six engine unleashes a

    mighty 320 horsepower in an

    eicient manner29 mpg on the

    highway with the optional PDK.

    In either model, this tremendous

    power is delivered to the

    road by a precision six-speed

    manual gearbox. Porsche

    Doppelkupplung (PDK) is

    available as an option. The key

    Direct Fuel Injection (DFI).

    The engine o the Cayman S

    has Direct Fuel Injection (DFI).

    With millisecond precision, uel

    is injected at up to 1,740 psi

    DFI improves the internal cooling

    of the combustion chamber by

    having the mixture prepared

    directly in the cylinder. This

    allows or a higher compression

    ratio (12.5:1), which helps todeliver more output along with

    enhanced engine eiciency.

    The purpose of integrated dry-

    sump lubrication is to guarantee

    a reliable oil supply whilereducing engine temperatures,

    even in sportily driven cars.

    exactly the same conditions,

    they are monitored individually

    by the knock control. The ignition

    point is shited individually, as

    and when necessary, to protect

    the cylinders and pistons at high

    engine speeds. The onboard

    diagnostics ensure timely

    detection o any aults and

    deects that may occur in the

    exhaust and uel systems, and

    notiy the driver immediately.

    This also prevents increasedpollutant emissions and

    unnecessary uel consumption.

    Engine cooling system.

    Our cross-low cooling system,

    as used in motorsport, supplies

    each engine cylinder uniormly

    with coolant. Valves are thus

    protected against overload and

    premature wear, which minimizes

    the engines tendency to knock

    and optimizes emissions

    and uel consumption.

    Engine management

    system with E-gas.

    The electronic engine

    management system ensures

    optimal engine performance

    at all times. It regulates all

    engine-related functions and

    assemblies (see diagram). The

    results: optimal performance

    and torque with reduced fuel

    consumption and emissions.

    The intake maniold with double-

    low distributor pipe has an

    adjustable lap that closes

    and opens at deined engine

    speeds. As a result o a two-

    stage resonance eect, the

    air mass in the intake maniold

    begins to oscillate, which in

    turn generates a turbocharging

    eect and optimizes induction.

    These two eects combine to

    produce higher torque at low

    engine speeds, a latter torque

    curve, and increased power

    output at high engine speeds,

    while the acoustic properties o

    the system are second to none.

    VarioCam Plus.

    VarioCam Plus combines

    variable-valve timing with two-

    stage lift on the inlet side.

    This results in smoother

    running, better fuel economy,

    and lower exhaust emissions.

    As well as greater top-endpower and low-end torque.

    This two-in-one engine concept

    seamlessly adapts in response

    to driver input. The result:

    instant acceleration and

    extremely smooth running.

    The variation in intake timing

    is steplessly controlled by means

    o an electrohydraulic rotary

    vane adjuster at the head o

    the corresponding camshat.

    For each exhaust tract, our

    corresponding oxygen sensors

    regulate the composition o

    the exhaust gas and monitor

    the conversion o pollutants

    in the catalytic converters.

    A sport exhaust system

    or a more resonant sound

    is available as an option for

    each o the Cayman models.

    Ignition system.

    The ignition system is designed

    or static high-voltage distribution.

    Individual ignition coils on each

    o the spark plugs ensure perect

    ignition every time. The individual

    ignition coils are controlled

    directly by the engine electronics.

    Servici ng.

    It is a good idea to have your

    vehicle serviced regularly, but

    it makes just as much sense

    to keep the time between

    maintenance services as long

    as possible. Why? Because

    a Porsche belongs on the

    road, not in the workshop.

    Exhaust system.

    The exhaust systemwith twin

    tailpipes on the Cayman Sis

    made o stainless steel. Until

    it converges in the connecting

    tube, the exhaust gas is

    channeled through two separate

    tracts and, thanks to separate

    exhaust gas cleaning systems,

    the exhaust gas can low more

    reelyor increased power

    and torque. The stereo Lambda

    compressor are all driven by

    a single self-adjusting belt.

    Hydraulic valve-clearance

    This double clutch provides

    an alternating, non-positive

    connection between the twohalf gearboxes and the engine

    by means of two separate input

    shafts (input shaft 1 is nested

    inside hollowed-out input shaft 2).

    The low o power rom the

    engine is only ever transmitted

    through one hal gearbox and

    one clutch at a time, while the

    next gear is preselected in the

    second hal gearbox. During

    a gear change, thereore, aconventional shit no longer

    takes place. Instead, one clutch

    simply opens and the other

    closes at the same time. Gear

    changes can thereore take

    place within milliseconds.

    Clutch 1 controls the irst hal

    gearbox, which contains the

    odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) and

    Reverse. Clutch 2 controls

    the second, which contains

    the even gears (2, 4, 6).

    Porsche Doppelkupplung

    (PDK).

    The optional Porsche

    Doppelkupplung (PDK), with

    both manual gearshit and an

    automatic mode, enables smooth

    gear changes with no interruption

    in the low o power. This results

    in signiicantly aster acceleration

    and lower uel consumption,

    without having to sacriice the

    ease o automatic transmission.

    In total, PDK has seven gears

    at its disposal. Gears 16

    have a sport ratio, and topspeed is reached in 6th gear.

    which results in a considerably

    aster rate o acceleration

    optional mechanically locking rear

    differential available in conjunction

    with 18-inch or 19-inch wheels. It

    further enhances the traction ofthe driven rear wheels on uneven

    roads and when accelerating out

    of tight curves, and the damping

    of load-change reactions during

    fast cornering is reduced.

    Roadholding at the limits of

    performance is even more

    impressive. The car holds its

    course better and so PSM

    intervenes less often.

    In other words, sheer driving

    pleasure and aster lap times.

    Porsche Active Suspension

    Management (PASM).

    The optional PASM is an

    electronic damping-control

    system. PASM actively and

    continuously regulates the

    damping orce or each wheel

    according to the road conditionsand driving style. In addition,

    the suspension is lowered by

    0.39 o an inch (10 mm).

    The driver can select between

    two dierent modes: Normal,

    which is a blend o perormance

    and comort, and Sport,

    where the setup is much

    irmer. Depending on the mode

    selected, thereore, PASM is

    sportier or more comortable

    than with the standard chassis.

    The PASM control unit evaluates

    the driving conditions and

    modiies the damping orce on

    each o the wheels in accordance

    with the selected mode.

    Sensors monitor the movement

    o the vehicle body, or example,

    under heavy acceleration and

    braking or on uneven roads. The

    control unit tunes the dampers

    to the optimal hardness or the

    selected mode to reduce roll and

    pitch still urther, and to increase

    contact between each individualwheel and the road.

    In Sport mode, the suspension

    is set to a harder damper

    rating. On uneven roads,

    PASM immediately switches

    to a soter rating within the

    Sport setup range, thereby

    improving contact between

    the wheels and the road. When

    the road surace improves,

    PASM automatically reverts to

    the original, harder rating.

    within the Normal setup range.

    depresses the accelerator pedal

    system detects the drivers

    upper rev range. The shit

    PSM system intervenes later or

    increased longitudinal and lateral

    greater maneuverability under

    braking and exit acceleration,

    especially at low speeds.

    For maximum dexterity, PSM

    can be set to standby while the

    Sport Chrono Package.

    the vehicles maximum braking

    power, which comortably tames

    the power o the engine.

    Four-piston, aluminum monobloc

    brake calipers are itted ront

    and rear. Oering excellent

    rigidity, they are compact

    and save on weight. Their

    superior responsiveness, or

    ast and sensitive braking, sets

    them apart. A brake booster

    provides assistance, reducing

    pedal eort while maintaining

    a powerul braking eect.

    A special ventilation system,

    whereby the entire wheel brake

    is supplied with cooling air

    by openings in the ront end and

    special channeling systems,

    increases the stability o

    the brakes during heavy use.

    The ront axle o the Cayman

    and Cayman S eatures internally

    vented brake discs with a

    diameter o 12.5 inches (318

    mm). 11.8-inch (299mm) brake

    discs are itted to the rear axle.

    The result is outstanding braking

    perormance. The rear brake

    discs o the Cayman S are 0.16o an inch (4 mm) thicker than

    those o the Cayman, which

    them visually, the brake calipers

    that has already had to cope

    Ceramic Composite Brakes

    (PCCB). The ceramic brake discs

    have a diameter o 13.78 inches

    (350 mm) ront and rearor

    response is ast and precise with

    only moderate input required.

    All the necessary ingredients

    are there or a short braking

    distance. Moreover, saety

    under braking at high speeds is

    increased, thanks to the excellent

    ade resistance o PCCB.

    The key advantage o PCCB

    is that the brake discs are

    approximately 50-percent lighter

    extremely powerul braking.

    The brake discs are ormed

    rom a specially treated carbon-

    iber compound that is silicated

    in a high-vacuum process at

    approximately 3,100F (1,700C).

    Not only are the resulting discs

    much harder than standard discs,

    but they are more resistant

    to heat. The low thermal

    expansion o the brake discs

    prevents deormation under
