1 Introduction Located at the John Hart Reserve Ethelton the Club operates from a wonderful facility comprising a Clubrooms and synthetic playing surface. A The Port Adelaide District Hockey Club had its beginning in March 1934 with one team. From this humble beginning it has grown over the years to be one of the largest and most successful Clubs in South Australia. Whilst the Club has many milestones there are a few that stand out: 1956 The Club built its first Clubrooms with volunteer

labour, using an old Nissan hut and bricks from a condemned house. In 1972 the Club built new Clubrooms and these were extended in 1984.

1967 The Club won its first men’s Premier League

Premiership. Since that time the Club has accumulated 20 premierships.

1987 The Club installed a basic synthetic turf pitch with

floodlights. This has now been upgraded to an FIH Category 1 ‘wet’ turf. The synthetic playing surface is now on its third cycle in the original position thankfully due to good financial management at the Club and state government funding to assist with the capital cost of replacement.

1988 The Club amalgamated with the Inlanders Hockey

Club (a club formed originally in Alice Springs with a strong indigenous background and a club without a ground or facilities. As a result of the amalgamation the Club fielded 9 female teams (6 senior and 3 junior)

1993 The Club won its first female Premier League Premiership and has won 16 premierships since that time, having competed in the past 16 grand finals winning 12 premierships (5-in-row from 2012-2016)

2012 The Club won all four grand finals on “grand final

day” - Premier League Men and Women, Metro 1 Men & Women.

2018 The Club fielded 11 senior teams and 9 junior teams.

The Premier League Men & Women won the major premierships with the women recording its 7th consecutive flag (18 consecutive Grand Finals). Teams in 12 grades participated in finals, with the club winning 5 premiership flags and 4 runner-up flags.

2019 The $650,000 new change room complex (named

the Dennis Meredith Pavilion) was finished, a project doing since 2017. The new facility will provide for users of all ages, gender, ability and cultural background. The facility includes:

- unisex athlete change rooms, unisex umpire/technical official change rooms, accessible toilet with baby change table.

- privacy screening at entry of all change rooms, individual toilet cubicles, no urinals, individual lockable shower cubicles with change seats inside each cubicle.

- Multifunctional disability toilet which includes a fold away baby change table.

The new facility is fully compliant with FIH requirements and the Club is now the only venue in South Australia that has the required 4 change rooms per one synthetic turf.

The Club facilities are used on a community wide basis with stakeholders including Henley High School, Portside Christian College, Independent School Girls Hockey, local Primary Schools, Grange Royals Hockey Club, SA Men’s Masters Hockey Association and SAPSASA. The Club is affiliated with Hockey SA and participates in the Adelaide Metropolitan Competition. Port Adelaide District Hockey Club is proud of its history and when visiting our Clubrooms in Ethelton, people can view memorabilia of this history throughout the Clubrooms, including premiership photos, premiership flags and other historical events that has helped shape the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club.

2 From the President2.1 President’s Report

Firstly, I again congratulate and thank all members on the success of the Club in 2019. The Club continues to set the standards in South Australia. Whilst the club was not successful in winning a premiership in 2019 (5 Runners-up) a club is measured by its success in all aspects both on and off the field. However, a club such as ours cannot afford to be complacent and rest on our laurels. We must strive to continue to improve and provide the best possible environment for all members. The club has recognised that it must do more to improve player recruitment (particularly juniors). Provision has been made in the 2020 budget to commence a new exciting primary school development program, targeted all the primary schools in our region. The Club has been nominated by Hockey Australia to be involved in this program and funding will be available to assist. Highlights for 2019

• The major highlight for 2019 was the completion of the new $650,000 change room facility, comprising 4 uni-sex change rooms, 2 umpire change rooms and an accessible toilet with baby change facilities. This facility is now the bench mark for all hockey facilities in this State. The project was funded by the State Government, through the Office for Recreation and Sport female facilities program ($500,000), the City of Port Adelaide Enfield ($90,000) and the Club ($60,000 – both monetary and in-kind).

The new facility is a shining example of what can be achieved through State and local government working together with a purely volunteer based club – an amazing group of volunteers with expertise and experience from all walks of life. On behalf of the Club I would like to acknowledge the incredible support and efforts of all those volunteers who have been involved in this project over the past 2 years. I would like to acknowledge and thank our Facilities Manager, Trevor Stockley for the countless hours he spent as Project Manager for the Club on this project. Trevor is standing down as the Facilities Manager and on behalf of the Club I say ‘THANK YOU’ for all your work over the past 3 years. Your contribution has been immeasurable.

• The club continued to be well represented in the various State and Australian teams (Seniors, Juniors and Masters) in 2019 (players, coaches and umpires). This continues to be a strong indicator of the strength of our club.

• Ongoing accreditation for Level 4 StarClub – the highest level of accreditation in sport management awarded by the Office for Recreation and Sport.

• Ongoing accreditation for Level 3 Good Sports Club – again the highest level of accreditation. We continue to provide a safe, fun and inclusive environment for the whole family.

• Yet another amazing social program throughout the season. Thanks for the Social Committee (Sarah Harrison, Crystal Morrison, Tess Mayes and Brigette Belton) for all the work they did throughout the year.

Key Issues for 2019 (a) Hockey SA

I reported last year that Hockey SA incurred a loss of nearly $300,000 for the financial year 2017. This was followed up with a loss of $70,000 in 2018. Club Presidents were advised at a Presidents’ Forum that an anticipated loss of $120,00 will be incurred in 2019.

Hockey SA is basically bankrupt and has sought a loan guarantee from Hockey Australia to enable it to be operational for the next few months, until such time as they have a cash flow again from competition fees.

Strong decisions must be made by the Board of Hockey SA to ensure that bankruptcy does not become a reality. The Board over the past few years have not been prepared to work on a yearly plan but merely continue with a model that is doomed to failure because of the overheads involved.

Currently we have an Interim CEO, the CEO of Hockey Victoria! However, we continue to have programs being maintained that are ineffective and costly.

Clubs have been assured for the past 3 years that Hockey SA would not participate in the Australian Hockey League unless it was cost neutral. In 2018 a significant loss was incurred by our participation in the AHL. With the introduction of Hockey 1 by Hockey Australia in 2019, we have incurred another loss (estimated at this stage between $70,000 and $100,000).

The current model of home and away fixtures, without free to air television is a non-sustainable model. It is a model that was used in the 1990s and used up all the reserves of the majority of States in Australia. Year 1 of the new Hockey 1 competition has incurred a loss of approximately $1m throughout Australia.

Hockey in this State is in crisis. Participation numbers continue to drop – many players (seniors and juniors) just find the cost of participation is now out of their reach.

The Club will continue to be a strong advocate for a new business model for Hockey SA. The Board must realise that they cannot continue to run the existing development, high performance and national competitions. Cuts must be made, and they must be made now.

(b) Financial Management In completer contrast to Hockey SA, the Club has had a very strong year from a financial management point of view. (see Treasurer’s Report and Financial Statements). The payment of fees in a timely manner has been greatly improved in 2019. The Club appointed Nicole Szkolik as the Club’s Membership Coordinator. With her skills, knowledge and experience Nicole put a new regime in place for the payment of fees by players. The amount of fees outstanding as the close of the financial period for 2019 is minimal. Thank you Nicole for your superb work in this area.

I believe we can still improve further. New policies and procedures need to be put in place from the outset to ensure that all players are financial by the 30th June in any given year. Management Committee The Committee met on 9 occasions throughout the season. I thank the committee for their time, effort and dedication throughout the year in delivering what has been a successful season for the club. Adrian Selder is standing down as Senior Vice President (Men) after serving on the Management Committee for 6 years. On behalf of the Club my sincere thanks to Adrian for the great contribution he has made to the club in his role. Communication with Membership Our communication with our club membership continues to be at very high level. The Club through its social media and the Club’s Magpie Newsletter provide the best communication models of any hockey club in this State. It continues to be a powerful selling tool for sponsorship. I would particularly like to thank Crystal Morrison and Tess Mayes for producing the weekly Magpie Update.and being responsible for the Club’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

New Scoreboard

The Club has been successful in obtaining a grant to install a new scoreboard and will be operational for the beginning of the 2019 season.

The new scoreboard will feature 360 mm digits for game time and scores displayed by ultra-bright wide angle LED digits. We will have the possibility of customising team names. The scoreboard will be operated by a wireless console from the technical bench.

The Club acknowledges and thanks the Hon. Mark Butler MP for obtaining this grant. It was upon his recommendation that the application was successful under funding made available by the Federal Government Stronger Communities Program.

Grant Applications

The Club continues to be active in applying for various grants to assist in projects for the Club. The Club acknowledges the Port Adelaide Enfield Council for providing a grant to enable us to provide junior hockey sticks and hockey balls for our junior development programs. The Club has also been successful in obtaining funds for the following projects:

• Active Program Club Program for sports equipment ($2,500). This grant will be used to continue the upgrade of the globes in our floodlights. This year a further 2 lights per pole will be replaced.

• New LED scoreboard through the Federal Government Stronger Communities Program, thanks for the efforts of our local Federal Member of Parliament, Mark Butler. This was installed in April 2019.

The Club is currently seeking a grant for the installation of solar panels to reduce the significant cost of electricity we incur with our floodlighting.

Upgrade Current Clubhouse.

With the completion of the change room complex, our attention now turns to an upgrade of the current clubrooms utilising the old men’s and women’s change rooms.

Plans are currently with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield seeking approval to extend the lounge area of the clubrooms into the old men’s change room, and create a new function / committee room in the old women’s change room.

Stage 1 will predominantly be carried out by club volunteers. Estimated cost for this work to be carried out is approximately $12,000.

Stage 2 of the upgrade ($80,000 - $100,000) will be a complete refurbishment of the current toilets (accessible, women and men). The Club will be seeking grant money to undertake this work.

Volunteers Volunteers are the very life blood of our Club. We have so many that make huge contributions throughout the year. Sincere thanks to all the volunteers and their incredible contribution throughout 2018.

Following the Australian Masters Championship this year both will again represent Australia at the World Cup in 2020, Bec in the O40s and Margie in the O65s. A magnificent achievement for mother and daughter. The hockey dream continues. Mick Anderson was selected as an umpire. He has also been selected to officiate at the World Masters in 2020. Sponsors I acknowledge and sincerely thank all of our Club Sponsors over the past season. We set a very high bench mark in 2018 which has continued in 2019.

Acknowledgement I acknowledge the support, encouragement and advice from our local members of Parliament, Stephen Mullighan, MP, Dr Susan Close, MP and Mark Butler, MP. The City of Port Adelaide Enfield through its elected members and staff continue to provide excellent support and advice to the Club. Thanks It would be remiss of me not to make mention of two key events in my hockey life in 2019. Firstly, to have received an AM (Member of the Order of Australia) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours was a complete shock and highly unexpected. I sincerely thank those in the club and throughout the international hockey world that worked together in nominating me for this very prestigious honour. Secondly, to have the new change room complex named the ‘Dennis Meredith Pavilion’ is also a huge honour. I have been fortunate to be part of this Club since 1957. I reached the pinnacle of my hockey career – as an international player, umpire and administrator. None of that would have been possible without this incredible Club.

As a young kid from Rosewater I found a ‘second home’. That has not changed – one of the great attributes of this Club – an amazing family, community-based club – a home away from home. I sincerely acknowledge what the Club has done for me over all of those years. I wouldn’t want anything different. I sincerely thank the Club for honouring me in such a way by the naming of this facility. Finally, it has once again been a great honour to serve as the President of the Club. Vale Jack Cibich

John (Jack) Cibich with granddaughter Jess – April 2019

It is with great sorrow that we lost a Club stalwart Jack Cibich who passed away peacefully on 17 October, aged 92. Our sincere condolences are extended to the Cibich family. Jack was part of the Club for over 50 years. For a person who has never played the game, his longevity and support for the club over so many years is legendary. He rarely missed a hockey match from the time his boys (Peter, Trevor and Barry) started as juniors at the club in the mid-1960s. His passion to support the sporting pursuits of his family continued when grandchildren Tobi, Luke, Karli, Jess, Adam and Elle also became hockey players at the Club. Their success gave him so much pleasure. Jack was a quiet humble man, with great values and qualities and, in partnership with his beloved late wife Joy, ensured those values and qualities were passed onto to his family. He was fiercely proud (in the nicest of ways) of his children and grandchildren. He was dearly loved and respected by all at the Club and we will sadly miss him. I am sure we can all now raise a glass of his beloved port to honour such a great man.

The Financial Statements for 2019 reflect an improved season from a financial point of view in difficult circumstances where we are aware

some clubs are struggling financially.

Improvements for the 2019 season:

1. Stable player base. Whilst we lost some players, we also made gains from new and/or returning members.

2. A substantial reduction in the outstanding debtors (money owed to the club) than 2018. 3. Good improvement in our Trading Activities with a Bar Gross Profit increase of 8% and even better (despite price

4 Major Individual Achievements

4.1 Club Life Membership

Life Membership is the highest Award available to recognise the exceptional contribution of individuals to the PADHC. It is therefore only to be awarded in exceptional circumstances.

In considering the award of Life Membership an individual should have demonstrated significant, sustained and high quality service enhancing the reputation and future of the Club.

This year the Club congratulates Sarah Harrison and Guy Wightman on their appointment as Life Members of the Club.

Sarah Harrison

• Sarah’s record of success, both from a team and individual point of view, would place her at the highest echelon of performer’s across our club’s rich history.

• The numbers speak for themselves but also don’t reflect accurately how she has been a unifying figure, not just with her uncompromising style of play and setting of the finest example on the training track, but when there have been times of crisis and the team has been up against it,

• Sarah both as captain and player has led by example and more often than not come out on top. It is staggering to this day how this has not been recognized with an association medal, but to win 4 Magpie medals and 6 MVP’s in a side littered with State and Australian representation, and with unprecedented team success, speaks volumes for her on-field contribution.

Guy commenced playing for the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club around the age of 10-12 years approx. Marilyn Young invited him to play after having participated in the Largs Bay Primary School team (Marilyn may be able to confirm the finer details of this). To date this, it would be around 1981/82. He played all his junior hockey here and unfortunately stopped at the end of his Under 17’s (as it was then) as he was not invited to join any senior teams the following year. After a break of around 3 years (and at the request of his terminally ill Mother, Heather) he returned to the PADHC at the age of 21. He has continued to play (and manage, coach represent on the committee) uninterrupted ever since. This would be from 1992 until 2018 a period of 26 years.

He brought both his niece and nephew (Tash and Michael Wightman) to the club and coached a number of junior teams from around 1993 – 1998. Somewhere in the period of 1998-2002 he served as Junior Coordinator on the committee for 2 years and continued to coach junior grades between this period. He continued to play/manage during 2002 to 2006 he reprised his coaching role with the Under 9’s when his son Drew commenced playing. This continued from 2006 through to 2010. He served as a general committee member from 2010-2012. He moved into a senior coaching role with the Metro 1 Women in 2015. Coaching for 3 seasons and winning one premiership and 2 runners up (may need to confirm these). As a player himself he has won in excess of 15 Premierships across Metro 1 through to Metro 4 and Veterans/Masters. He has participated in 3 Masters Games and in 2010 was awarded the William “Bill” Drewett Award for playing service to the club. He captained/coached the Metro 4 (Muppets) side to 3 or 4 premierships in more recent years and in 2018 has stepped backed up to Metro 3 where he again manages the side. Throughout the 2000’s he has been an integral part of “the hill” on Grand Final days supplying canopies, support and creating video content as an everlasting memory of club success for all to share. 2 years coaching Metro 5/6 ladies. Also State over 45 rep. His dedication to off season working bees, general maintenance, managing “roasts on the spit” for club home days, not to mention complete renovation of the club kitchen in the “new millennium” has been second to none. Examples such as ice machine and the like, employing club members such as David Reid. There isn’t a person in the last 25 years at the club that could doubt his love, enthusiasm and complete commitment to the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club. He is the true definition of “club man”.

1 Basis of Preparation

In the opinion of the Committee of Management, the Association is not a reporting entity since there are unlikely to exist users of the financial statements who are not able to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy specifically all of their information needs. These special purpose financial statements have been prepared to meet the reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the recognition and measurement requirements of the Australian Accounting Standards and Accounting Interpretations, and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 Presentation of Financial Statements, AASB 108 Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors and AASB 1054 Australian Additional Disclosures.

2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

(a) Income Tax

The Association is exempt from income tax under Division 50 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

(b) Revenue and other income

Revenue is recognised when the amount of the revenue can be measured reliably, it is probable that economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the Association and specific criteria relating to the type of revenue as noted below, has been satisfied.

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable and is presented net of returns, discounts and rebates.

Cash sales, donations and bequests are recognised as revenue when received.

Revenue from the provision of membership subscriptions is recognised on a straight line basis over the financial year.

Revenue from the rendering of a service is recognised upon the delivery of the service to the customer.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Grant income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt. If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied.

(c) Goods and services tax (GST)

Revenue, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST), except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Receivables and payable are stated inclusive of GST.

2 Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

(d) Inventories

Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost of inventory is determined using the first-in-first-out basis and is net of any rebates and discounts received. Net realisable value is estimated using the most reliable evidence available at the reporting date and inventory is written down through an obsolescence provision if necessary.

(e) Property, plant and equipment

Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation and impairment.

Items of property, plant and equipment acquired for nil or nominal consideration have been recorded at the acquisition date fair value.

Depreciation

Property, plant and equipment, excluding freehold land, is depreciated on a straight-line basis over the assets useful life to the Association, commencing when the asset is ready for use.

(f) Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents comprises cash on hand, demand deposits and short-term investments which are readily convertible to known amounts of cash and which are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value.

Opinion

We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report of Port Adelaide District Hockey Club Inc. (the Association), which comprises the statement of assets and liabilities as at 31 October 2019, the statement of profit or loss, the statement of changes in equity and the statement of cash flows for the year then ended, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the statement by members of the committee.

In our opinion, the accompanying financial report of the Association for the year ended 31 October 2019 is prepared, in all material respects, in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985.

Basis for Opinion

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the Association in accordance with the auditor independence requirements of the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board's APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Emphasis of Matter - Basis of Accounting

We draw attention to Note 1 of the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report is prepared to assist the Association in [Enter Compliance Requirements]. As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our report is intended solely for the Association and should not be distributed to or used by parties other than the Association. Our opinion is not modified in respect of this matter.

Responsibilities of Management and Those Charged with Governance

Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act (SA) 1985, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, management is responsible for assessing the Association's ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless management either intends to liquidate the Association or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so.

Those charged with governance are responsible for overseeing the Association's financial reporting process.

Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.
