Ms Blacklow, who works with the Port Douglas Neigh- bourhood Centre, was so suc- cessful in introducing the nationally recognised no-interest-loans scheme (NILS) that today 90 per cent of NILS clients are from that commun- ity. She was nominated by the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre NILS committee for the GAVAN Podbury award for NILS excellence. Ms Blacklow was attending the annual National NILS con- ference in Brisbane when her win was announced. In accepting her award Ms Blacklow shared her pride in being a part of the communi- ties’ progress toward intergen- erational financial inclusion. She happily accepted a prize that went her with award, a 55 inch 3D smart television donated by The Good Guys Commercial Sales, who are now sponsors of Good Shepherd Microfinance, which is the largest microfinance organisation in Austra- lia. They were there not just to join in the fun but to drum up more support, and in particular, win recruits for its very think ranks of volunteers. The situation was bad ‒ the Wonga Beach unit has two trucks but only six active volunteers. But the extra effort paid off somewhat on Saturday when they gained another four recruits. “Another six recruits would be good,” said local member Peter Ross, a stalwart who’s been with the unit for decades, along with his wife Ruth. “But really we’d like another nine.” Ruth is already running flat out as secretary, treasurer and several other committee posts. The Wonga Beach fireys’ area stretches from Rocky Point to the turn-off to the Daintree River ferry. Mr Ross says they need a big- ger crew to be able to fully man the two trucks and have a back up when things are busy. They might be called out up to three times in a busy week ‒ cane fires, fires from BBQs on the beach, house fires etc ‒ and then they might be left alone for weeks on end. One of the new recruits from Saturday was Michelle Price and her husband who have just moved to Wonga Beach. They were farmers at Tow- rang, which is near Canberra, and were members of the local brigade for 37 years. Mrs Price did communica- tions for the whole bush fire zone in the area. “I’ve got a life membership of the local brigade down there,” she said. She said it wasn’t good the Wonga unit was down to six members “but hopefully they’ll get some new members and get going a bit more”.
