President’s Spring Thoughts

Spring is here and the days are gettinglonger. The grass is growing at Hansen Parkwhich promises to be a great venue again inthe summer.

Our facilities were thoroughly enjoyed by theparticipants of the recent under-17 cross-country races. It was great to see so manykeen youngsters taking part. Well done to allclubs concerned.

As is often the case, the Port Hills singlet hasbeen dominant at the key events aroundChristchurch. Let’s keep it that way duringthe summer season. There is no doubt, without our club, many meets would besomewhat subdued.

Port Hills runs and supports a number ofevents throughout the summer. Some ofthese are major fund raisers for the clubwhich allow us to assist our athletes, maintain facilities and update ourequipment.

Please try to mark some time to help whenyou can.

Many thanks to the members who supportedour recent AGM. The committee has alreadymet and is planning for success over thenext 12 months and beyond.

Have a great month.

XC & R CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Hi Members,

Spring’s here, but with the odd cold snap togo with it!

Here is what's happened since the lastnewsletter.

Timaru Round the Gorge Relay

For the second year in a row Port Hills couldnot muster any teams - very disappointing.

Club Road Champs RangioraRun in conjunction with NC, PTH and NBO.There was a good turnout and some verygood results. Thanks to North Canterbury forhosting the event.

Governors Bay to LytteltonThirty five members took part in this eventwith Port Hills members well to the fore andsome good times achieved. Rumour has itthat Warren has done some research oncomparing the men's times with last yearsefforts with some interesting results.

Following this event it was straight back toHansen Park to set up for the U17 races. This was well supported from all the clubswith 154 youngies taking part. A big thanksfor all those who helped out. This was verymuch appreciated.

To finish off, good luck to all membersrunning in teams for the Takahe - Akaroa.Keep the flag flying high.

TRACK AND FIELD CLUB CAPTAINSREPORT

The weather is improving (wellmostly) ,spring is here and the Track & Fieldseason is approaching fast. We have had anumber of meetings over the last few weeksto finalise details for the season and to try toensure it starts well and continues brilliantly.

We have already commenced pre-seasontraining on Sunday afternoons at three, withgood attendances. By the time you read thisour registration nights will have been heldand we will have an indication of likelynumbers, but already the phones have beenrunning hot with enquiries.

A number of people have undertakencoaching courses to enable them to assist inensuring our athletes get the best possiblehelp, and the senior coaches have agreed ona coaching programme for the season. Alsowe are to run a ‘Know the sport” session onthe 7th of October at 9am for three hours. Inthis we will cover all the events, coveringrules, techniques and helpful tips forimprovement. All are welcome and weencourage all parents to attend.

Our opening club night on the 1st of Octoberis at Hillmorton High School, with one night amonth being at Hansen Park. Then theseason interclub opening is at RawhitiDomain on the 13th of October, with the firstTimaru meet on the 27th of October. So thereis a lot going on over the next month, whichdoesn’t happen by itself. Already a lot ofhours have gone in to get this far, but wecannot operate without help from parentsand other volunteers. So we ask everyone topitch in and offer to assist. If you don’t youwill be asked to!

Also on the 14th of October the club runs theCrater Rim run, for those of an inclination torun a long way up hills. This is a good fundraiser for the club, and needs a lot of helpersto run efficiently. We encourage anyone whohas a spare few hours on the Sunday tocome along and help – mostly standing atcritical points on the course and pointingperspiring participants in the right direction,or offering them sustenance (a cup of water).

We all look forward to another successfulseason, with a great start.

Dave Kennedy — Life Membership

2012-08-22

Dave was a foundation member of Waimate

Toc H in 1962 before he came to Christ-

church. He must have thought we were a

good club, because he joined St Martins in

1980 and hasn’t looked back.

In his first year with the club, he ran the 12k

club cross country champs and was 6th

senior out of the twenty eight seniors who

took part - a big difference in the numbers

compared to now! He was also quite handy at

the ultra races and that same year he ran the

New Brighton 50 miler for 4th place in

6.26.17 and was 6th in the Symon and

Lowther 100k in 9.16.

He was a member of the Masters team that

won the Takahe – Akaroa Relay race in

1991.

Dave has always been on hand to help at

fund raising events and was known to

happily cycle home each Tuesday nights with

a big bag full of money!

After a few stints on the committee, Dave

took over as treasurer from Terry Warren in

1998 and has been there ever since and has

done a great job of looking after the club

funds.

It gives me great pleasure to present Dave

with this Life Membership on behalf of the

Port Hills club members.

Congratulations Deek.

DAVE RIDDELL – LIFE MEMBER

Dave Riddell joined the St Martins Club in1992. He was looking for a way to keep fit,and enjoyed running. He quickly developedinto an aggressive runner both at crosscountry, road running and on the track. In1995 he was elected onto the committee, andin 1996, to fill a vacancy, became ClubCaptain. He carried out this duty until 2002when the clubs merged to become Port Hills, whereupon he became the Track & FieldClub Captain. He was one of the principalmovers and shakers in the club merger andplayed a large part in setting up andestablishing the new club. His style ofmanagement was a no nonsense, straight-forward one, which served the new club wellin its formation and initial establishment.Dave was intimately involved in obtainingthe new club uniforms through sponsorship, and had been previously led the building ofthe throwing circles and cage at Hansen Park.Later on his work led to the installation of thenew horizontal jumps pit, with Dave doingthe donkey work with a small team in layingthe boxing and pouring the concrete.

While undertaking the Club Captain’s role,he became involved with children’s athletics, and quickly became intimately involved withthat side of the sport. He was one of theprincipal organisers of the Track and FieldClub nights, and at one stage this would havefolded if he and Trish had not soldiered on,the two of them organising the nights almostdual handed. Dave quickly became involvedin children’s Saturday morning competitions, and was soon undertaking coaching andquickly learned the trade.

Dave developed a passion for coaching, andwas soon training a string of teenage athletesto high performance and honours. He mainlycoached sprints and middle distance, but hadmuch success also with hurdles. He put in ahuge amount of time, effort and thought intocoaching his athletes. Dave coached athletesto numerous Canterbury Children’s titles,Canterbury Secondary Schools titles, SouthIsland Secondary Schools titles, Canterbury

titles, and had many athletes perform withdistinction at the NZ Track and FieldChampionships. Probably his crowning glorywas when one of his athletes won the 400mtitle at the Oceania Championships.

Dave also saw the need to be involved in theadministration of Children’s athletics, beingon the committee of the CanterburyChildren’s Athletic Association, becomingPresident for four years and Vice Presidentfor three. During this time Dave led manychanges in the association, bringing it up todate to face the challenges of the sport today. This involved a huge amount of effort fromDave and he was not always well supportedduring his terms of leadership.

Dave finally retired in 2011 ending adistinguished involvement with the sport andthe club. He has left his mark well and trulyboth at the club and the wider Canterburyathletic community, and no doubt Trishwelcomes having him around home for morethan just meal and bed time. A trulydeserving Life Member.

If any parents and children would like to join mefor a social run on Wednesday evenings. Pleasefeel free to join in – 5.30 pm Victoria Park.

Phil Chapman, Ph 322-4266.

From the Quarry

Mondays at 5 pm.

At last the evenings are getting longer andslightly warmer, Once Daylight Saving starts, wewill change to trail running or any other activitythat suits – eg. relays etc

Most of our runners usually go to the summerathletics meetings, so numbers are small over thisperiod. If any parents have suggestions or ideasthey would like me to try, this is a good time togive them a trial. Last year we tried to incorporateall the new bridges the park staff have installed.

Good luck to all those who are going away withthe Canterbury Primary Schools Rep team. Wehave had a couple of members of this team joinus for training over the last month and we wouldlike to see them continue running with us.

Thank you to all the parents who helped over thewinter. This year we had 80 cards filled in andwith larger numbers turning up it is impossible tobe everywhere at once.

GOLD CARDS: The gold card group havedeveloped well and I now know where the timeswill be set for this group. It was very pleasing tosee some of this group choosing to do the Rimtime-trial run, as and when they felt it was timeto re-measure performance.

Parents running: Several parents have joined inthe running this year. This is really good to seeand is a great help in supervising the group.
