PORT OF HAMBURGTRADITION MEETS INNOVATIONMajestic cruise ships at a wave’s length from gigantic container vessels. The historic Speicherstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, right next to the futuristic HafenCity Hamburg. The restless pulse of world trade within eyeshot of crowds chilling at the beach. The Port of Hamburg, one of Europe’s largest ports, fascinates with its contrasts. Towering over this oceanic juggernaut, the new Elbphilharmonie Hamburg symbolises both the historic roots and the modern attitude of Hamburg and its port. Built on a 20th-century brick storehouse, a delicate glass structure soars into the sky – a bold edifice that enchants beholders and already ranks among the most famous concert halls and architectural landmarks in the world.

The impressive passing of the big cruise ships can be enjoyed in relaxation from thebeach in the middle of the city.

The futuristic HafenCity withthe new “Elbphilharmonie” concert hall is one of thelargest city planning projectsin Europe.

The historic Speicherstadt warehouse district bore stony witness to the 19th-century trade era. The unique ensemble has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 2015. The romantic Wasserschloss, the most popular photo spot in the Speicherstadt.

THE HEART OF THE CITYELEGANT AND TRENDYSome say that Hamburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s hard to argue with that opinion while taking in the marvelous scenery of the Alster Lake in the heart of the city, surrounded by lavish green leisure areas and the buzzing quarters of downtown Hamburg. In close vicinity to the magnificent Town Hall, flagship stores, fashion boutiques and elegant arcades invite you to a top-notch shopping spree. Just a short walk away, the hip Schanzenviertel quarter, once a hotbed of counterculture, is the place to be for all those in search of edgy couture, fancy bars and independent art galleries, cinemas and record stores.

Majestic arcades invite to shopping.

Cutting-edge of cool: the Schanzenviertel quarter, home base for Hamburg’s creatives, independents and hip crowds.

Simply breathtaking: Hamburg’s city center with the Town Hall and the Alster Lake, Hamburg`s prime sailing spot located right in the heart of the city.

MUSIC CITYNOTHING BEATS THE HAMBURG SOUND Hamburg has always been famous for its music culture. This is the place where the Beatles came of age performing in dinky red-light taverns before they took the world by storm in the early 1960s. Here, Germany’s first public opera house opened in 1678. The city is the birthplace and playground for some of the most influential classical composers (among them Brahms and Telemann), choreographers, rock musicians and hip-hop artists of the past and present. There’s something going on everywhere: be it the annual Reeperbahn Festival with more than 500 international bands and artists in the pulsing St. Pauli district or the ELBJAZZ Festival in the middle of the busy harbour.Since 2017, with the opening of the magnificant new Elbphilharmonie concert hall, Hamburg has gained a new cultural urban landmark. It is an ideal combination of spectacular architec-ture and acoustic perfection.

The magnificent neo-baroque structure of the Laeiszhalle provides a wonderful ambience and welcomes stars from the international music scene.

At the ELBJAZZ Festival, the harsh industrial charm of the Hamburg harbour meets with musical diversity and unique maritime concert experiences.

On the Beatles Platz, the outlines of thefamous musicians are exhibited as sculptures.Visitors can place themselves inside the outlines and become a Beatle themselves.

The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg’s newcultural landmark, which, in addition to 3 concert halls and a hotel, is also home to the “Plaza”. The plaza is a publicly accessible platform that floats 120 feet above the ground and offers an incredible 360° panoramic view of the port and the city.

DAZZLING DIVERSITYTHE CULTURAL SPIRIT OF HAMBURGIt was already important to the liberal and worldly Hamburg merchants and citizens in the 18th century to make art and education publicly accessible. This spirit is reflected to the present day in the large number of excellent museums, galleries, theatres and exhibitions, many of which are in the immediate vicinity of the beautiful Alster Lake. Both old masterpieces and international contemporary art and photography can be discovered within a comfortable walking distance. However, not only the exhibited art is worth a visit: many museums, theatres and galleries impress with exceptional architecture that itself bears important witness to the history of Hamburg. For example, the Deichtorhallen, former market halls that are today among Europe’s largest and most beautiful exhibition halls.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle houses one of the most important public art collections in Germany, including masterpieces byCaspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter.

Famous choreographer John Neumeier made Hamburg the ballet capital of Germany.

The Emigration Museum BallinStadt showsthe moving history of more than 5 million emigrants who embarked upon their journey to America from Hamburg between 1850 and 1939. Visitors can search for their own family’s emigration history.

Each year in December, the lights of morethan 20 Christmas markets transformHamburg into a sparkling wonderland.
