LIVING HISTORY
GILLELEJEThe rescue of the Danish Jews in October 1943
11
The sea breeze is a constant reminder that the port is a vital part of the town’s atmosphere. Fishermen clean their lines, and ships lie in the harbour surrounded by restaurants and fish shops packed with freshly caught local temptations from beyond the outer pier.
Lots to see in GillelejeFrom the harbour you are led through winding, narrow streets between rows of thatched fisher-men’s cottages, through to the town centre. In the workshops at Culture Harbour Gilleleje, you can watch craftspeople working right next to the Soeborg Channel. Gilleleje Museum offers a trip back in time to the days when the tradition of fishing began in the town.
October 1943 During the Second World War Gilleleje was one of the channels to Sweden that saved the lives of many of the Danish Jews. As the northernmost
point in Sealand, Gilleleje was a natural escape hatch. Refugees were hidden in many places in the area, from summer houses to the attic of the town’s small church. On the evening of Octo-ber 6, 1943, 80 refugees were discovered in the church attic. Only one escaped.
Guided tour for small groupsExclusively for small groups, the old pastor will tell what happened at the church attic that night. It is a gripping story and its intensity is magnified when guests hear the story in the church attic, in the shadows of candles.
COPENHAGEN
In Royal North Sealand you’ll find Denmark’s most impressive royal gardens – the gardens of Fredensborg Castle and Frederiksborg Palace. Each are in a class by themselves.
You will also find the healing medicinal garden of Esrum Abbey and Mill, and at the international Louisiana Mu-seum of Modern Art, you can experience the iconic sea view from the terrace, overlooking the world-renowned sculpture garden.

WELCOME TOHUNDESTED
The history in brief– Vikings, seals, kings, fishermen, ferries and cultureThe sea has always been central to life in Halsnæs.As far back as 700 AD, there was a beach market at Lynæs, south-east of Hundested, and the waters around Hundested were a busy route for Viking merchant ships. They docked at the market and their cargo was transferred into vessels able to sail right up the fjord. There was a royal castle here, and the 33-metre-high Klintebakke was a lookout point to alert the castle of the arrival of foreign ships.
A huge merchant ship dating back to the late Viking Age (c. 1150) and built according to Scandinavian traditions was excavated near Lynæs.Royal hunting ground The area inland was sparsely populated back then, and Hundested consisted of a huge reef stretching far out into the sea and occupied by seals. Several kings, including King Christian VII, hunted the seals here in the late 18th century.Stones from the reef were later used to build the foundations of Trekroner Fort in the Sound, which prevented Lord Nelson from taking Copenhagen.Hundested Skanse (redoubt) is located within walking distance of the centre, and the bus passes it on its way to Knud Rasmus-sen’s House. The fortification was built in 1809 to defend the entrance to the fjord against the British. Two cannons still remain at Skansen, which is today used as a picnic area and viewpoint, and for the annual Constitution Day celebrations on 5 June.
Popular tourist destinationWhen the fishing community was properly established in the 1800s, the town was named Hundested after the numerous seals that lived along the coast. Its ideal location by the sea and fjord meant that the harbour, and hence the town, grew, and in 1916 the railway came to the town, which now had a modern industrial port. With it came the boat builders and shipyards, followed by several ferry routes, and today Hundested is a thriving industrial port, a popular marina and a vibrant cultural harbour, attracting thousands of tourists every year.

WHERE TO GO & WHAT TO SEE
Welcome to Hundested
The TownHundested boasts a cosy harbour, magnificent scenery, world famous history and crafts of the highest quality. And our local guides are here to help you get the most from your visit.
On your ownExplore the town on your own, receiving useful information along the way from the guides positioned at selected locations, and take the special shuttle bus that transports you a little further afield, with knowledgeable guides on board, hopping on and off as you please all day.
Meet the localsThe guides are ordinary people who are proud to live in Hundested and are keen to share their knowledge about the place. They are recognisable by their ”I’m local – ask me” T-shirts.
The impressive works of the Sand Sculpture Festival are created by some of the world’s leading sculptors. Check out the dramatic sculptures in and outside the boat house, accentuated by coloured lighting. The theme is ”Great Danes” with names such as Karen Blixen and Hans Christian Andersen.
Where to go & what to see The shuttle bus: The buses run all day, and in the town centre you can get on and off at the cruise ship, the culture harbour and on Nørregade. The bus operates a circular service from the town centre, a few kilometres north-east to Knud Rasmussen’s House, Spodsbjerg Lighthouse and Kikhavn, and back to the centre. You can walk from Knud Rasmussen’s House to Kikhavn and take the bus back to the town.
Backhaus-Brown is a working glass studio, where unique glass art is created by Brit Andrew Brown and Dane Nanna Backhaus Brown. Classic Italian techniques become contemporary Scandinavian design. Watch them blow glass in front of the large kilns and learn about this special art form.
Egeværk is an open cabinetmaker’s workshop where Mette Bentzen and Lasse Kristensen create unique, handmade furniture. They also make smaller items such as candlesticks from the wood of 200-year-old oak trees originally planted to build warships for Denmark’s maritime defence against the British.
Kikhavn is the area’s oldest fishing village, dating back to the 13th century. With many well-preser-ved, beautiful old farms, houses and cottages, it is today an idyllic, car-free village. Relax at the beach or in the farm shop/café selling produce from its own back garden and livestock.
Knud Rasmussen’s House and Spodsbjerg lighthouse offer magnificent sea views. This was where the world famous polar explorer lived and worked when not on an expedition. The museum is filled with Greenlandic artefacts and art, and local guides and the museum staff have exciting stories to tell.
Nørregade is Hundested’s cosy high street with shops, cafés and little places to take a breather and just soak in the atmosphere. Guides will also be here to help you, and a few hundred metres from the town centre you find a Blue Flag beach if you fancy feeling the sand between your toes.
Quench your thirst with local, mostly organic beer at Halsnæs Bryghus brewery. The brewery was started 7 years ago thanks to the investment of many locals. Today it is also a very popular eatery and music venue, and the guide on site will tell you all about it.
The boatyards at the port are important pieces of Hundested’s history. The boat builders are still busy here, but they are more than happy to show you around. Come on in and hear the guides’ fascinating stories about this unique craft, in authentic surroun-dings with tools and the smell of tar.
”Fiskeriets og Havnens Hus” (The fishing and har-bour house) offers experiences for the young and old. Stroke a flatfish and catch a crab on the platform in the harbour basin where guides will tell you about life above and below the surface.

Knud Rasmussen’s HouseVisit the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen’s House and discover the fascinating stories from his numerous scientific expeditions to Green-land.
Hundested SkanseLocated within walking distance from the port area. The fortifications were built in 1809 to de-fend the fjord against the British. Two cannons still remain at Skansen – we use them to salute when your cruise ship departs Hundested!

Here, an annual Viking Festival takes place (end of June – mid July) which includes a Viking Market with stalls and workshops plus an open-air performance with several hundred performers.
