Cargo SchoonerLost In Storm
The proud three-masted sailingvessel ARTEMIS, last of the greatNorth Sea schooners, came to her finaltragic resting place recently in 250fathoms of water in the Gulf ofMexico. She was the last woodensailing vessel listed in Lloyd’s ShippingRegistry.
The 350-ton ARTEMIS, sailingfrom Mobile, Alabama, to Norfolk,Virginia, to take on her firstcommercial load of cargo destined forCanada, went down after being hit by90 knot winds 120 miles east of St.Petersburg, Florida.
The ship sailed in the Tall Ship Raceacross the Atlantic in 1976, and placedfifth in the run from Plymouth,England to Tenerife. Built in Denmarkin 1903, th~ vessel was eventuallypurchased by Rick and SharonHarrington of Houston.
In 1977 the Harringtons refittedher, and sailed her as the Gulf CoastMaritime Museum. A group ofCanadians bought the vessel in Sept.,1979, to once again use her incommercial trade.
