The Portland Rally Club is laying out the route for the drivers and cars, of which there are expected to be 20 cars partici- pating. Poirer said all kinds of cars take part in these rallies and mentioned an Austin 3000. The Rally will actually begin in Wilsonville with the destination point being Driftwood Elementary School in Port Orford. Poirer said the drivers, each of whom will be accompanied by a navigator, would take back roads as much as possi- ble in their routing to Port Orford. The southern route includes taking Interstate 5 from Wilsonville to the King’s Valley Highway to Alsea, Stage Coach Road to Coquille and Powers and then Sixes Riv- er Road to Highway 101. The purpose of this race is not to be the first car and driver to enter Port Orford. Rather it is to arrive at the “control points” at specific times. The navigator is on board to help calculate the exact speeds it takes to arrive at those control points. This is why they call it precision driving. The rally drivers will leave Wilsonville on Saturday, October 8 and return home the next day. They will drive over 600 miles round trip. The rally goal is to have the drivers arrive in Port Orford between 4:00 and 5:00pm on Saturday afternoon. One tentative plan is for the drivers to assemble at Cape Blanco Road and then proceed together to Port Orford and through town to Battle Rock Park and then back to Driftwood. On Saturday evening the Chamber of Commerce will hold an Octoberfest din- ner for the rally drivers at the Communi- ty Building. It will be open to the public and feature local seafood, wine and beer and a dance. The rally drivers will depart Port Orford around 9:00-10:00am on Sunday morning. Renner is an integral member of a localart group which paints together on Thurs-day mornings. Child Abuse PreventionThe Commission on Children and Fam-ilies (CCCCF) will pass a resolution atthe Monday, April 18, Curry CountyBoard of Commissioners Meeting pro-claiming April as Child Abuse Preven-tion Month. The Commission welcomesthe community to participate in this ob-servance. Over 1,500 children were re-ported victims of abuse and/or neglect inCurry County in 2003.

The Court Appointed Special Advocates(CASA) program and the Curry CrisisAssessment program are funded throughthe CCCCF and serve victims of abuse &neglect. The CASA program functionswith one half time director and commu-nity volunteers. These trained CASAvolunteers act as a child’s voice in courtand advocate for the needs of the chil-dren in the judicial system. Director,Alice Loshbaugh said the CASA volun-teers have been very successful in advo-cating for children. CASA volunteers

have served over one hundred CurryCounty children. Currently, there are nineCASAs handling a very large caseloadwith several children waiting to be served.CASA volunteers require ongoing train-ing and education. This is a challengewith funding reductions, limited resourc-es and one half time employee facilitat-ing the program. Alice Loshbaugh hopesto expand funding for the program andcontinue fundraising events.

The Curry County Crisis AssessmentProgram is funded through the CCCCFand the Curry County District Attor-ney’s Office. It is staffed with a part timedirector and contracted private counse-lors. Director, Barbara Eells and ToddArmstrong of Lighthouse Counselingwork to provide victims of child abusewith assessments and counseling imme-diately following reported abuse. Theprogram has proven successful, servingover sixty children since it began operat-ing. Unfortunately, the program has re-ceived significant financial reductions,

forcing the Advocacy Center to operateon a part time basis. Director, BarbaraEells hopes to increase funding for thenext fiscal year.

For further information regarding theprevention of child abuse, parent train-ing, respite care or other related topics;contact the CCCCF office at 541-247-5600. To report suspected child abuse orneglect, call the Oregon Department ofHuman Services, Community HumanServices at 541-247-KIDS (5437).

[Editor’s Note: According to http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/41/41015.html, there were an estimated21,813 people in Curry County in 2003,approximately 4,200 of whom were un-der 18. www.childrenfirstfororegon.orgputs the 2003 population at 21,100 with3,892 under 18. They cite only 62 CurryCounty children as being neglected/abused instead of 1,500. – Valerie Kram-er]

Home Health RecognizedCurry County Home Health recently re-ceived an OMPRO Quality LeaderAward. This award recognizes homeshealth agencies that have achieved sta-tistically significant improvement in atleast one Outcomes Based Quality Im-provement (OBQI) measure. Since 2002,Home Health Agencies have worked onOBQI projects as part of the nationalHome Health Quality Initiative support-ed by the Centers for Medicare & Med-icaid Services (CMS) and OMPRO, Or-egon’s Medicare quality improvementorganization. Through the project, homehealth agencies choose one or two mea-sures to work on out of 41 possible OBQImeasures.

“OMPRO is pleased to recognize thequality improvement successes of CurryCounty Home Health and other agenciesin the state,” said Priscilla Swanson, RN,CCM, OMPRO Home Health Team lead.

Langlois Lions BingoThe Langlois Lions Club will host bingoat their clubhouse Friday, April 8 at 6:30p.m. Everyone is invited to attend;.Refreshments will be available.

The Lions clubhouse is located on FlorasLake Loop in Langlois. All proceedsfrom this fund raising event go to localarea projects.

The agency showed improvement in painmanagement by using a multi-disciplin-ary team approach, and incorporatingcase conferences and comprehensive as-sessments every time a patient is seen.Additionally, the agency received an on-site survey from the Oregon Departmentof Human Services during the third weekof March. The un-announced survey forrecertification and licensure included acomprehensive assessment of patientrecords, administrative records, policiesand procedures. The surveyor also madea number of visits to patient homes. Thesurvey resulted in a finding of “zerodeficiencies”, a level rarely attained byagencies due to the highly regulated in-dustry. The successful survey found CurryCounty Home Health in compliance withall federal (Medicare) regulations, as wellas meeting all requirements of the Ore-gon Administrative Rules. The agencywas given a rating of “1”,the highestranking available.

“I am very pleased to have received theQuality Leader Award, and to have sucha successful survey following, is frostingon the cake!” cites Lori Kent, RN, CHPN,Director of Curry County Home Health& Hospice. Kent feels that the back-to-back achievements are evidence of thevery strong clinical and support staffteam. “We concentrate all our efforts toprovide a team approach, and set veryhigh standards for our patient care andoutcomes”.

“Curry County Home Health & Hos-pice’s staff should be commended fortheir commitment, given the competingdemands for staff time and energy,” saidSwanson.

Letter to the Editor,Anyone who wants to get a break fromthe everyday downers of life in 2005should treat themselves to seeing Guysand Dolls in Bandon this weekend.

The performances are so professionalthat you quickly forget that you arewatching people between 13 and 18 yearsold. You can sit back and enjoy one ofAmerican’s great musicals done well. The singers are exceptional, so hum alongunder your breath. On opening nightthere was not one nervous moment that

interfered with the music or plot, and thecharacterizations by all of the featuredperformers, as well as the supportingcast were uncanny interpretations forpeople who are too young to haveexperienced the trials, times or locationsthe play portrays.

I know only one of the performers, whichis why I attended, so don’t think my viewis overly influenced by familiarity withthe cast.

Have a good time watching a greatproduction, and then walk out that door

to shake hands with the cast. You’ll beface to face with a nice bunch ofpersonable people who will make you gohome feeling there is, indeed, great hopefor the future of the human race.

Letter to the Editor,Thanks to you Louis Mincer, for yourtireless efforts in keeping us locals in-formed of CCEC’s (Coos Curry ElectricCoop) problems. Louis is the only watch-dog we have. Jean Shank got elected byprofessing to be our citizen watchdogbut has disappeared into the Board sincebeing elected. Is she still around?

Letter to the Editor,We would like to thank all of the commu-nity and others as far away as Seattle,Washington who have pledged money tohelp in the apprehension of the person orperson in this brutal poisoning of all ofour beloved animals. It is really heart-warming to see all of us pull together tohelp stop the cruelty that’s taking awayour precious pets.

We believe that this person or personswill be apprehended! Because of every-one banding together and the rewardnow reaching over $6,000, all of ourhearts are in the right place and ourcommunity is very strong and willing notto let this type of terrorism and murderloose in our town. Everyone please watchyour pets very closely and report any-thing unusual to the Port Orford PoliceDepartment at 332-9013. We are still

accepting “Good Faith Pledges”. No re-ward will be paid until the arrest andconviction of this awful crime that hasbeen committed against all of us. TheA.C.E. Fund will continue and is stillgrowing with your support and help.

All pledges are being accepted at Finch’sCustom Jewelry and Highway 101 Li-quor Store. Thank you all. Call us at 332-4400 or 332-0990.

Sincerely,

Milt, Dee and also Ace

What I know for sure is my rates havereally jumped – from the charge for themeter to the watt usage charge. And I amconfident that with the current electedBoard of Directors leadership, rates willcontinue to go up.

With Louis out of the way who will beour voice? Does anybody care? If youdo, contact Louis, contact the local paperand contact the CCEC Board.

If CCEC is successful in silencing Louis, whom will they silence next? Just lastweek David Meeker wrote a letter to theeditor stating his plea for help. Are anylocals listening or will you sit apatheti-cally by and just grumble about “our”coop being out of control and unac-countable to us, the members?

Watch out,

Ava Peterson
