Sunday 7th February 1999 Sub.30p Port Out Starboard Home! I gather from my ‘Boaty7 friends that the expression POSH comes from those going on a cruise on the Suez Canal. The well-to-do people who wanted to be in the shaded side of the boat, both going and coming, would have to change sides on the way home. Thus P O S H was written on their luggage. Posh became a slang word for being wealthy or upper crust. I was recently listening to (or rather, exposed to) MTV when the interviewer asked the caller, “Is that a posh place where you live?” The caller said that she felt it wasn’t. Then the interviewer said, as an aside, “I regard posh as when your parents are still together”. I thought to myself, what a wonderful statement about Marriage and Family Life. i.e. Everyone breaks up except the posh. This music station is directed to our youth and plays music by request etc. all day. The following day I was surfing the remote of my TV when I caught 90210 - a young people’s show of the general angst of being at college or being young. The problem here was that a new flat- mate was (perish the thought!) smoking marijuana indoom. Imagine!! Are you aware of what today’s youth are exposed to on the T. V.? Some of it is very blatant and some is very subtle. There are several responses that can be made to this invasion of our homes. I gather that every television in the country has an OFF switch that parents should definitely use now and then. Another way is to give the time to listen to the Radio and T. V. and casually or pointedly pass comment on the content of it. I hear that in the not so distant future we will have maybe 50 Channels on T. V. to monitor. Faith and Moral values are caught - not taught I, for my part, will stay addicted to SCI FI. So, May the Force Go With You! Live Long and Prosper! Beam me up Scotty! Na-Nu Na-Nu! Fr. Port Out Starboard Home!

The problem here was that a new flatmate was (perish the thought!) smoking marijuana indoom. Imagine!! Are you aware of what today’s youth are exposed to on the T. V.? Some of it is very blatant and some is very subtle.

There are several responses that can be made to this invasion of our homes. I gather that every television in the country has an OFF switch that parents should definitely use now and then.Another way is to give the time to listen to the Radio and T. V. and casually or pointedly pass comment on the content of it. I hear that in the not so distant future we will have maybe 50 Channels on T. V. to monitor. Faith and Moral values are caught - not taught

I, for my part, will stay addicted to SCI FI. So, May the Force Go With You! Live Long and Prosper! Beam me up Scotty! Na-Nu Na-Nu!

4PARISH N O TICES St. Mary's Lucan

Parish Programme for Lent. Most religions have a designated time, once a year, when we are invited to focus on our Faith and do something practical about it. For Catholics it is the period prior to Easter we call Lent (the word Lent means ‘Spring5, a time for new beginnings or new life). This year Lent starts on Ash Wednesday 17th February, just ten days away.We may decide to give up one of the old ‘reliables’ - smoking, drinking, sweets, sugar in our tea etc. - or attend daily/weekly Mass or other religious excercises. Here are a few suggestions for Lent which we might consider.

Family Lenten Prayer:This is a commitment, as a family, to a period of 15 minutes family prayer once a week, during Lent We provide you with a candle and a suggested Prayer Service.Perhaps over the next week you might discuss it with the family and on Sunday next put your name on the list at the doors of the church if you wish to participate. The following Sunday (21st February) the candle and Prayer Service will be available.

Lenten TalksOn every Tuesday during Lent (with the exception of 16th March, eve of St. Patrick’s Day) we are running a series of talks on other Christian Churches and Judaism in the Parish Centre.Tuesday 23rd Feb. 8 pm :The Jewish Faith.Speaker, a Jewish Rabbi.Tuesday 2nd March: Methodism. Rosemary LindsayTuesday 9th March: Presbyterianism.Trevor Morrow.Tuesday 23rd March: Anglicanism (Church of Ireland)

Lectio Divina (Bible Study)Lectio Divina is a group process of reflecting on the Sunday Mass Readings and sharing the relevance and meaning to our lives today.

During Lent, commencing on 22nd February at 8-9pm in the Parish Centre, we will have our Bible Study. It will take the form of short prayer, reading of the Gospel for the following Sunday, short reflection and discussion on the reading. If you are interested, just come along.Surely there is something in there for everybody this Lent! Take Your Pick!

Did You Know........

Hanbury Lane, in Lucan is called so after Major General J. A. Hanbury of the Army and Navy Club, London, who was a close friend of the Vesey family, in

Lucan House.

Brookvale - the site on which Brookvale is built was known as Bella Leonard’s field for many years. Leonards who

owned a sizeable amount of land in Esker, including the site of the newer graveyard, originally owned this land. It was the venue for circuses and carnivals in summertime, and was also used as a playground and football ground for the old Tech on Esker Hill!

Chapel Hill was the only route to the new St. Mary’s Church, which dates from 1835. Work on the new Main Road did

not commence until 1837, its route dividing the church grounds in two. The concrete steps on Chapel Hill today replace the old clay steps, which led across a field to the church.

W atery Lane - the little lane down to Weir at St. Andrew’s, dates back to when a bridge crossed the Liffey at

this point. The new apartments are actually being constructed on the road from the old bridge (formerly the site of St. Andrew’s Schools). Up to the 1960’s were small two- storey houses on the right hand side of the lane as one goes down to the river.

Tinker’s Hill according to local lore is attributed to the itinerants who camped there over the years.

Stanford’s Hill is called after the Stanford family who lived at Ounavarra during the 1800’s.

Bleach Green at the bottom of Wen- View was the site of Sisson’s Linen Mill around 1750

School News 8Scoil Mhuire

Woodview /A ir lie Heights, Lucan

On Friday 29th January'. An Taoiseach Mr.Ahem visited Scoil Mhuire. It was a memorable occasion as it was the First time a government leader visited the school. During Ins visit he officially opened the Hewlett Packard Computer Room. Two children from each class were represented in the computer room and showed Mr. Ahem how highly skilled they were at computing. He was very impressed at what he saw at the new "state of the art’ computer room. There are about twenty-five computers in die school and each classroom lias access to the internet.

In die new beautifully refurbished hall the children eagerly awaited An Taoiseach with dieir teachers, invited guests and the Parents* Association. After speeches from Mr. Thynne, Mr. Ahem and a representative of Hewlett Packard, a video link-up was set up with Clocha Rince National School in Movvalley, Co. Kildare. Captain of the Dublin Football Team. Dessie Farrell. was present in Scoil Mhuire and he spoke to a member of the Kildare Football Team. Padraig Graven, on the video link-up. Afterwards An Taoiseach and Dessie Farrell presented some children with medals in recognition of their achievements in Gaelic football and basketball throughout the year.

Mr. Ahem joined in a rendition of Molly Malone, sung and played by the children on dieir recorders. Even though he must have a very busy schedule, he took time, to meet every child and shake their hand. Refreshments were served, autographs signed and photographs taken, and without a doubt diis will have been a memorable day in die life of every Scoil Mhuire pupil.

French Exchange Lucan / Vannes ’99 A group of 24 French students, along with four teachers from Vannes, France, are at the half w ay stage of their month long Irish visit. The French Principal, Monsieur Michel Le Como, participated in a tree planting ceremony on Tuesday last to mark their visit. Pupils attend classes with their own teachers in the mornings, various activities are arranged for afternoons and weekend trips to places of historical interest take up the remainder of their time. We hope t hey will return home with many happy memories of their trip. The exchange visit is pardv funded by the Linga programme.

Pedestrian Crossing

To whom it concerns:When are we going to get a Pedestrian Crossing in the Village of Lucan? It is long overdue - or have we to wait for a serious accident or worse still a death?R.N.

• 1993 Rezoning for housing was granted.• 1998 an Bord Pleanala overturned the

planning decision on grounds of ‘visual intrusion’.

• 1999 2nd Appeal for housing lodged with Fingal Co. Council for the same number of houses, less 1 Water Storage area.

• Monday 1st February. County Manager of Fingal Co. Co. gave Planning Permission for housing.

If anyone wishes to object, they should writeto An Bord Pleanala within 4 weeks of 1st

Next Sunday, 14th Feb, is Valentine’s Day - we are just warning you in time, so that your loved one will get a declaration of your affection!

Is it not about time that the row between C.I.E. and the Private Bus Company on the Lucan/Dublin Bus route in the morning was cleared up? Apart from the bad feeling and the hassle between the different parties, if the stories printed in the National Press are true, there would appear to be a waste of Busses, and a danger to road users?

Good Luck to the Lucan Concert Band with their big night in Maynooth this weekend.

RESULTS *The Senior Footballers were unlucky in their first league outing of the season. They were beaten by just one point by a very good St.Brigids team on Sunday last in the 12th Lock.A last minute goal from St.Brigids proved to be decisive and although Lucan had many opportunities to level the game, they were most unfortunate not to get a well deserved draw. The Minor ‘B’ Footballers got their season off the ground when they travelled to Maynooth G. A. A. club to play a challenge, even with good performances from D. Martin, C. Malone.S.Quinn. D. Walsh and J.Twomey, they lost this first game.

LOTTO RESULTSThere were plenty of winners in the club on CSunday night when the Lotto numbers were ̂drawn. John Mills Junior won the big jackpotx of £4,700 with 4.6.9.17, There were two winners of the second jackpot of £700. They were; Nanny McCaffrey (Sean’s Mum) and Susan Condren. They each received £350 and the numbers drawn were; 4.6.12.13, next weeks Jackpot will be £500. Winners of £10 were; Dolores Aird. 76 Beechpark; Kevin McNally,C/o Peter Flannery; McGann’s, C/o Paul;O.Malone, C/o T.McCormack; Venessa Galligan, C/o D. Corrigan; John Mills Jnr. (Again!!!); Teresa Collins, C/o Tom Duff; Aine MacMathuna. C/o S.Clandillon; Gerry McNamara, C/o S.O’L.;David Cooney, 6243829; Lena Goucher, 15 Hillcrest Park. Next weeks Lotto team will be led by Shay Hurson.

STAY SAFEOn Thursday last. Seamus Clandillon gave a very interesting and informative talk to team managers and mentors on the subject of the care, safety and encouragement of team players. Let’s hope we see the theory put into action in the months and years ahead.

HILLCREST F.C.January Lotto: Winning Nos. - 4/10/21.Jackpot - £1,000.00. One winner:- “Back Door Gang”, C/o Co.Bar. £10 to each of the following: Steve Smith, C/o Promoter; Viv Rapple, Hillcrest Way; Brian McCormack, Meadow View Grove; Denis Fox, Hillcrest Drive; Tracey Burke, Hillcrest Heights; Cathy Nugent, C/o Co.Bar; Brendan Wright, Hillcrest Grove; Tom Murphy, 43 Roselawn; E. Graham, Hillcrest Drive; Paddy Cummins, C/o K.Doolan. Next draw:- 26th February.

oU/12: (I) St.Paul’s Artane 2, Hillcrest 2 We beat this opposition by 5-0 at home and we may have taken this game a bit for granted and, but, for a spirited second half performance we would have lost. We only scored the equaliser with five minutes left for play. We had plenty of chances to win comfortably. Scorer: Neville Curtis (2).(2) St.Anthony’s 3, Hillcrest 6 we got off to a flying start and scored three goals in the first fifteen minutes. We led by 6-1 at one stage but got tired and conceded two late goals. Well done to all the lads, however, especially our hat-trick hero David Murphy. Other scorers Daniel Blake, Neville Curtis, Mark Barry.Sympathy: we extend our deepest sympathy to Martin O’Donoghue on the recent death of his brother. Martin’s son plays for the club and is a great supporter of club functions and Lotto draws.Anniversary: The second anniversary of the late Brendan Curtis will soon be upon us and his anniversary Mass will be in StPatrick’s Church, Esker on Saturday 20th February at 7.30 pm.

WESTON HOCKEY CLUBThe Men’s lsts had 3-2 win over TRR, a feature of the game was a missed penalty stroke by both sides middle way through the second half. If

Weston had scored they would have run out comfortable winners by 4-2, as it turned out they had to endure a nervy last 15 minutes and won the match by the odd goal:The Ladies lsts lost to Aer Lingus on the Astroturf at Airport by 1 -0. Weston had the ball in the net before Aer Lingus scored, but it was ruled out due to a high ball from the penalty comer. Immediately Aer Lingus went to the other end where they forced a penalty comer and from the comer the goal was scored. It washard luck on Weston but to be fair Aer Lingus missed a handful of chances before they scored their goal. For information please ring the Office,6219026.
