END OF AN ERA
Last Friday night saw the end of Bingo sessions in Port Wakefield under the Emergency Services Auxiliary. After approximately 18 years Nancy Halls, together with helpers, has run the Bingo sessions. With her impending move from Port Wakefield and no other group to take over the organisation and running of Bingo it has had to close. Here’s an opportunity for another group to take on the project and raise funds for community projects or their organisation.

Volunteer student recruits join the Port Wakefield ambulance service
Five new student volunteers are supporting the local community. From left: Brad Lewis, Anne Harding,
and Jo Goller (not pictured: Sarah Fealy and Damien Bishop)
The Port Wakefield ambulance station has welcomed five new student recruits over the past
12 months and are encouraging more community members to get involved. The local station is
entirely dependent on SA Ambulance Service volunteers, and without them there would be
no ambulance in Port Wakefield.
Jo Goller, 50, is a nurse at Balaklava Hospital and mother of four who put her hand up when she
realised how vital volunteers are to the local ambulance service.
“It’s been fantastic,” she said. “Just the idea of helping your community and knowing the
ambulance is going to be there when people need it is very important to me.”
Volunteer Damien Bishop, 35, balances his time in the Army with volunteer ambulance training. “I definitely recommend it. In Port Wakefield we are so far away from any other major hospitals and it’s the ambulance volunteers who usually get there first,” he said. “The team is great and there’s quite a diverse group of knowledge.”
The students are able to fit their training in with other responsibilities, including work and family.
“It can be a little bit of a juggle but on the whole it’s not a massive commitment,” said Jo. “It’s a
good organisation to get involved with and they give you all the training you need.”
Training to become a volunteer ambulance officer is free and a medical background is not
required. Brad Lewis, 31, has been training for 4 months while also working as a warehouse
manager.
“It’s quite flexible and definitely a life-changing exercise,” he said.

becoming an ambulance volunteer, you
