You have long been accustomed to the publication of acity portrait of Munich every two years on the occasionof the Baumesse (building trade fair) that takes placein the Bavarian capital in January. This time we are
taking advantage of the year without a trade fair to visitGermanys clandestine capital in the North. Currently,Hamburg is much talked about as the venue of Europeslargest construction site, the HafenCity. In late autumn2011, the new building of the Spiegel Group was completedas a constructional equivalent to the Elbphilharmonie.
The distinguished glass cube on a stone plinth is locatedat a prominent location at the northern entrance to theHafenCity. The mighty edifice was designed by the Danisharchitecture firm of Henning Larsen. Further to the east, theberseehafen (overseas harbour) has considerably takenshape. The increasingly dense infrastructure is perfectlysuited for the 25hours Hotel Company that already operatesits second hotel in the city. Even though it is located withina hybrid perimeter block development, the building isdistinguished by its sensationally unconventional interiordesign. The 25hours Hotel at berseeallee 5 is alreadyamong the citys most popular hotels. Yet the Hanseatic
city is not only growing along the banks of the Elbe. In thecity centre, many post-war buildings are being replacedby modern office buildings. The first element of therejuvenation of the Rdingsmarkt district was designed by
the Hamburg architect firm of Bothe Richter Teherani andconsists of a massive solitaire building whose windowsresemble monitors inserted into the metal facade. Adistinguished feature is its large opening on the water side,while the street side is rather more closed off. We hopeyou enjoy this exploratory tour of Hamburg.

distinguished buildings will dominate the image of thecity in the future. On a European scale, HafenCity is asuccessful project as it already contains a felicitous mixof various uses while the public areas with access to thewater are also very well received. However, in some areasit is lacking a uniform or cohesive architectural style. Inmy opinion, the Spiegel building contributes to the positivedevelopment of the location by offering, in addition toa modern and attractive work environment, appealing
outdoor premises that vitalise the urban space.
PORTAL:Even though the topographies of the twocountries are very similar, Germany and Denmark are
two different countries. Do you believe that this is alsoexpressed in their architectural styles?KLAUS TROLDBORG:I believe that the architectural styleis closer related to the individual architectural firm than itscountry of origin. For example, Henning Larsen Architectsdoes not apply one uniform style to all its projects. Webelieve that the solution for each new project must be
developed from its specific requirements and possibilities.
PORTAL:The outcome of the competition for the newSpiegel headquarters was eagerly anticipated in Hamburg.What did you feel when you found out that you werechosen to design this important building as a foreignarchitecture firm?KLAUS TROLDBORG: The Spiegel is a well-known icon of
the international press that stands for quality at variouslevels, including architecture and design. We are thereforevery proud that Henning Larsen Architects was given the
opportunity to design a new building for the publishinghouse. The building lot at the Ericusspitze is especiallywell-suited for creating a modern and dynamic workenvironment for the Speigel employees.
PORTAL:HafenCity in Hamburg is considered to beEuropes largest urban development project. What doarchitects in Denmark think of HafenCity?KLAUS TROLDBORG: In many European cities old harbourpremises are currently being converted and integratedas new city districts into the growing cities. PORTAL:The most dominant building material of northernGermany is clinker brick. With the exception of the plinth,you opted for a glass facade for the Spiegel building. Why?KLAUS TROLDBORG: Henning Larsen Architects alwaysworks with the dominant local context. In this case, the
transition between Speicherstadt and HafenCity at theEricusspitze inspired our facade design. We wanted torepresent this transition in the architecture by creating areference to Speicherstadt in the heavy, brick-clad plinth
section. This is juxtaposed by the filigree, smooth glassfacade that symbolises the newly constructed city district.The surrounding buildings of both Speicherstadt andHafenCity are reflected in this facade, which creates aninteresting interplay with the interior.
PORTAL:A modern media headquarters is not aconventional office building. What are the differences?KLAUS TROLDBORG: The Spiegel management was verykeen on ensuring privacy for the individual offices toenable the greatest possible concentration during work
hours. However, one of our main architectural aims is tocreate meeting points and locations where people interact,which is clearly apparent in the new Spiegel building as

well. This is why the atrium serves as a large meeting andcommunication space. It can be used for informal meetings
that result in a better and more intense exchange of ideas,which can inspire the work of individuals.
PORTAL:What do you want to express with the largewindow to the city in the northern facade?KLAUS TROLDBORG: On each floor, there are two or three-story high rooms that partially face the window to the
city. This allows the city to be viewed from the atriumwhile it also provides a space for encounters that are ofkey importance for both the business and a positive workatmosphere.
PORTAL:To what extent did your company have aninfluence on the interior design of the building?KLAUS TROLDBORG: Henning Larsen Architects wascommissioned with choosing the materials and the designfor the entire Spiegel building. A very distinctive feature on
the interior is our design of the atrium with its 13 bridges
and stairs that create both horizontal and vertical dynamicconnections between the floors. At the same time, theatrium with its adjacent three-storey caf / lounge section

PORTAL:The building has been awarded with the highestlevel of the prestigious HafenCity Ecolabel in gold.How important is environmentally-friendly construction inDenmark?
KLAUS TROLDBORG: The HafenCity Ecolabel in golddefines sustainability in a comprehensive way it not onlyconsiders energy and water consumption but also socialsustainability and the sensible use of materials. Theseare also important aspects of construction in Denmark.Many of the sustainable solutions are closely connected
to the architecture and therefore strongly influence thearchitectural and aesthetic expression of buildings.

There was a general sigh of relief in Hamburg when theSpiegel Group announced that it was not going to move toBerlin. The necessity for a move was due to the Groupsexpansion the old headquarters, a remarkable high rise
by architect Werner Kallmorgen built in 1968 had alreadybecome too small in the 1980s, which is why additionalspace was rented in the vicinity. However, the desire tobring together all divisions and the 1100 employees atone single location finally resulted in the new buildingby the Copenhagen architectural firm Henning LarsenArchitects. The importance of the project can be seenby its location on the Ericusspitze promontory the plot
that is surrounded by water on two sides once served asan important part of the city rampart that was erectedduring the Thirty Years War based on Dutch prototypesand today demarks the eastern entrance to HafenCity.
Located in the visual range of the old Spiegel building thenew construction, which has been complemented by asmall office building that can be let, was intended as aconstructional equivalent to the Elbphilharmonie. However,
the sober-minded Danes do not aim at sensationalism their design was not intended to be boastful but to primarilyserve its purpose as a modern media headquarters. Theunpretentious appearance is suitable for a publishinghouse whose approach is based on the motto of itsfounder Rudolf Augstein Say it as it is. Consequently,
the monumental triangular building with its 13 floors and
30,000 square metres of gross floor area gives a modestimpression on the outside with a triple-glazed facade that
is only accentuated on the side facing the Deichtorplatz bya recessed window to the city. Originally, this area wasreserved for a media wall, projecting the latest news ofSpiegel TV and other programmes into the urban space.
However, the giant screen was not implemented to avoidshading of the buildings interior. The brick cladding of theflood-protected building plinth is reminiscent of the localconstruction tradition. Inside, a similarly triangular atriumextends to the top floor, terminating in a glass ceiling thatallows a great amount of daylight to enter the building. Thisvast open space is crossed by a large number of bridgesand stairs and surrounded by open galleries. To increase
the daylight yield, the walls separating the offices fromthe galleries are glazed. The offices themselves have apure and sober style and permit a view of the harbour,Speicherstadt and the city, just like those of the old
building. The remarkable public socialising areas are opento all with the most attractive one being the three-floorhigh snack bar near the window to the city. It wasequipped with elements of the legendary Spiegel cafeteriacreated by designer Verner Panton the colourful walllamps, fabric prisms and suspended lamps revive theSixties in the new building. Its contemporary equivalentis the new staff canteen designed by Ippolito Fleitz on theground floor the futuristic, almost surreal atmosphereis created by thousands of matte shimmering sound-absorbing aluminium ceiling plates, large yellow light
reflectors and jointless white terrazzo floors.
The media sector of Hamburg is closely associated with the Spiegel Group. Withthe new building on an upscale lot of land at the northern entrance to HafenCity, thepublishing house was able to bring together all its divisions that were previously
scattered all over the city. The Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen designed atransparent structure on a solid plinth with a prominent tip and a striking window tothe city.

The infrastructure ofHafenCityis becoming increasinglydense, turning the former mono-structure into anindependent city district. Initially occupying the area on
their own, office and residential buildings have long since
been complemented by small groceries, markets, pubs,cafs and restaurants. Even a school with a kindergartenhas been established. The developing infrastructure isaccompanied by increasing numbers of tourists whopreviously had to find accommodations in the city centreif they wanted to stay longer than a day. The 25hoursHotel in berseequartier has changed this situation.The 25hour Hotel Company already operates a hotel inHamburg, which caused quite a stir when it opened in2005. The concept is based on an unconventional interiordesign that aims to mainly attract young guests. With a
tongue-in-cheek approach, the hotel on berseeallee
tells tales of seafarers, captains and sailors, of freighters,passenger liners, of difficult ocean crossings, wild stormsand distant destinations. Not only are the public areas fullof insinuations and scenic elements the rooms brim withseafaring romance as well. Instead of merely going into theroom, the guest enters a bunk in which real and fictitiousseafarers have left their marks. However, the guests arespared the morning cleansing jump into the Elbe river. Thebathrooms offer the desired comfort. Yet the hotel offersenough opportunities for adventures. A rooftop saunaallows guests to enjoy genuine sea air while relaxing
outdoors, including a magnificent harbour panorama. In
the lounges guests can find computer stations on extendedtables as well as comfortable armchairs and couches.A genuine overseas container in the lobby offers roomfor private meetings. Young people feel right at home.
The interior design style resembles that of a shared flatrather than a distinguished upscale hotel. Conventionalarchitectural criteria do not apply. The interior designersfrom Stephen Williams Associates of Hamburg designeda colourful vivid setting with a focus on the emotionalappeal rather than architectural aesthetics. The exterior of
the building, however, contrasts with this. The hotel doesnot stand alone, but is part of a hybrid perimeter blockdevelopment that was initially only planned for residences,with a wide range of services in the ground floor area.With its current combined use as a hotel, residences andretail trade, the Virginia project represents the rare
hybrid building type. The Hamburg architects BgeLindner K2 modified the normally closed off block withfractured elements in the corner sections. These openingsincorporate the interior courtyard into the urban structureof the HafenCity without forfeiting its value as a quietrefuge. While on the outside the block adopts the urbanlines and perspectives of the berseequartier including itsmateriality, the energy flow that is bundled by the fracturesseems to virtually cause the whitewashed courtyardfacade with its ceiling-high glazing to vibrate. Thepolygonal outdoor areas with selected groves underlines
the cheerful impression.

Ever since the dawn of designer hotels, theme hotels have been more popular thanever. In late summer of 2011, the 25hours Hotel Company opened its second hotel inHamburg. The location in HafenCity inspired the interior design company Stephen
Williams to work with seafaring elements. In contrast to the emotional interior, theexternal brick facade is in compliance with the design guidelines of HafenCity.

Even though all attentionis focused on HafenCity,Hamburg has many plots of land near the water furthernorth as well. The loading canals cross the old part of townin an intricate system in the past they were important
life lines through which the goods that were unloaded atthe harbour were transported directly to the warehousesof the citys merchants. Today, only a crane here or thereacts as a reminder of the bustle of past business and
trade structures which had a huge impact on the looksof the Rdingsmarkt quarter. The buildings of that areaare currently undergoing their third renewal. As the firstelement of the future development of the district, the newbuilding, with house number 16, plays an important role. Asan individual building, it must fit into the master plan andalso harmonise with its neighbours. The compact cubicshape chosen by Bothe Richter Teherani is covered by
an eye-catching facade structure of angular anthracite-brown metal panels. Room-high glazed sections wereinserted in these panels and arranged side by side likemonitors. Their uniform arrangement adds the requiredcalm to the currently very heterogeneous environment.The square structure features openings and passagesof different sizes that allow interaction with the street aswell as the water side. This concept is underlined by thelarge glazed hall that offers different views and vistasand thus acts like a door to the loading canal. This way,
the building does not have a hierarchical front side and a
less prominent back side like most other buildings. Rather
the contrary the otherwise fairly closed off sides of thefacade are opened up towards the water with a centralopen air space that is enclosed on the 6th and 7th floors, ata height of 20 metres, by a two-floor bridge, the so-called
Fleetflgel (canal wing). The interaction of vastness andnarrowness is particularly noticeable here. The facadesof the interior courtyard are covered in a uniform verticalstructure of stainless steel pilaster strips that continueson the underside of the Fleetflgel and the woodenflooring of the outdoor premises. With its high-qualityfurnishings and sculpture-like plants, this space is idealfor lingering and relaxing while enjoying the view of theAlsterfleet. The building is crowned by a stacked storey on
top of an indented intermediate storey, which is designedas a joint and houses the building systems while alsoproviding access to the roof terrace on the Fleetflgel.
The stacked storey itself opens generously to the south-western direction facing Hamburgs famous Michel and thefuture Elbphilharmonie. The panel-style facade elementsare also used as design elements on the inside. References
to what the architects describe as the monitor facadewith its slanted reveals are found as fixed installations in
the entrance hall, as lift entrances and even inside thelift cabins themselves. Lounge corners and the furnitureof the tenants also play with the theme in various ways,impressively underlining the comprehensive designapproach of both interior and exterior areas.
In the old city district of Hamburg more and more post-war buildings are gettingreplaced by modern office buildings. At Rdingsmarkt, architects Bothe RichterTeherani designed the first building of the newly structured quarter near the
Alsterfleet. The compact structure is distinguished by a striking opening overlooking the waterside, whilst being closed off towards the street.

to its flexible cladding, the applied
Hrmann ALR 40 aluminium sectionaldoor can be matched to almost anyfacade covering on-site. For thisreason, materials such as plastic,wood, metal, ceramics and otherscan be used up to a certain weight.This way, the Hrmann sectional doorgives architects the greatest possibledesign freedom in which the onlylimitation is the maximum thicknessof the cladding of 46 millimetres. Thegap dimension between the individual
elements of at least 20 millimetresdetermines the design. Hence, the useof this door can make the functional
task of designing a garage part of anaesthetic overall concept.

MANUALLY OPERATEDROLLING SHUTTER
The SB industrial rolling shutter byHrmann is the only counterbalancedrolling shutter on the market with
a tension spring mechanism. Thecounterbalance allows the useof more cost-effective operatorsand even manual operation. Likein sectional doors, tension springscounterbalance the weight of the doorcurtain and transfer their power to
the barrel via cables and cable drums.The curtain can be easily moved byhand or by a hand chain. Contrary
to other counterbalanced doors, the
manually operated SB rolling shuttercan be stopped at any height. It isavailable with a large number ofHrmann curtains customers canchoose between the single-skinnedHR 120 A and HR 120 aero curtains,
the polyurethane-foamed profilesDecotherm A and Decotherm S and
the HG-L rolling grille. Hrmann offersthe SB industrial rolling shutter upto a width and height of four metres.Thanks to the counterbalance,
the door does not have to rely onpowerful direct drive operators,
but can be operated with the newlyintroduced industrial door operatorWA 300 R. It starts and stops gently,allowing the door to travel quietly andsmoothly. This increases the servicelife of the door. At the same time,it does not require a roll-up safetydevice as the operator is switchedoff automatically by force limitation incase of increased opening forces, forexample if someone holds on to the
door curtain.
A DOOR FOR THE FACADE
In the daily work routine of architectsgarages are often only seen asinsignificant peripheral objects.However, when the aim is to designa new garage that meets the highestaesthetic demands and that fits inharmoniously with an existing group
of buildings or the landscape, thisrather minor design task becomesmore important. This was the casewith a garage for six cars in LowerSaxony, Germany, which wasimplemented by the architecturalfirm D:4. The request was for adesign that would harmoniouslycomplement the main building. Thedesired design of the new garagewas achieved by a stretched out
flat building whose appearanceideally matched the local setting. The

In the RollMatic roller garage doorthe curtain is rolled onto a shaft.This provides additional storage and
hanging space under the garageceiling. In addition, the door offersan ideal solution for special siterequirements, for example if asectional door cannot be fitted due topipes or beams. Hrmann now alsooffers matching side doors for quickaccess to the garage. This provides
the garage facade with an attractiveand uniform overall appearance.Hrmann offers the side doors with
corner frames as standard.
The Architects Darling Award,which was awarded on the occasionof Heinzes 50th anniversary, is
already the second award received byHrmann in 2011 for its architecturalefforts. In March, Hrmann received
the Architects Partner Award fromthe architecture trade magazineAIT. I am very pleased at this newaward, said Axel Becker, sales andmarketing manager of the Hrmannsales company. It is impressiveevidence of the positive image ourproducts enjoy among architects.
Architects want Hrmann. This wasthe result of a survey by HeinzeMarktforschung of more than 1800

Stephan Balkenhols roughly hewn and colour-treated
wooden sculptures are difficult to miss by anyone whoactively observes his surroundings. They show people onwooden posts in the middle of the Elbe river balancing,climbing up the necks of giraffes or simply standing therequietly. Balkenhol mostly hews these figures, which aresometimes oversized and sometimes small as dwarfs men, women, animals or chimera, directly out of halvedor quartered tree trunks using a chisel and a mallet. Thebase and the trunk form a single unit. The results arerealistic despite the rather rough treatment. Upon closerinspection, however, the figures reveal practically nothing
of themselves. They appear ageless, their faces show no
traces of emotions they seem to stare into space. Thisenigmatic timelessness embodies both personality andanonymity. With his well-known sculptures in public areas,Stephan Balkenhol counteracts the tradition of monumentsby enthroning innominate human nature. The artist doesnot glorify heroes, but rather celebrates the mediocre,banal and anonymous. Yet this positively distinguishes thefigures from commissioned abstract art that often doesnot appear integrated. Most people without too muchknowledge about art are simultaneously pleased andsurprised by Balkenhols sculptures.

With the Columbia Twins of local architect Carsten Rothwe say farewell to Hamburg to dedicate the next issue ofPORTAL to facades. In line with this we have a look at theoffice building located between Elbstrasse and Neumhlen.
It has an appealing cladding made of reddish shimmeringstainless steel sheets. In sunny weather and especiallyduring sunset the large sheets shine like copper acontemporary interpretation of the brick buildings of thenearby quayside warehouses.
