PORTERVILLE COLLEGE
HEALTH CAREERS DIVISION
ASSOCIATE SCIENCE NURSING PROGRAM
MISSION
The mission of the Porterville College Associate Degree Nursing Program is to prepare entry-level
registered nurses as providers and managers of care across the health/illness continuum and as
members within the profession. Graduate nurses will collaborate with members of the health care team,
be effective communicators, be politically aware, and demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning.
The study of nursing is the application of knowledge from the arts and sciences. The purpose of the
Porterville College Associate Degree Program is to provide the foundation for students to become
competent registered nurses. The ADN Program respects the individuality of students and recognizes
that each student has different educational, experiential, cultural, spiritual, economic and social
backgrounds and a unique support system. The aim of the Program is to provide a positive, innovative
learning model that fosters the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills so that the
graduate nurse is equipped to deliver care to a culturally diverse population in a variety of healthcare
settings.
A grade of “C” or better is required in each nursing course for progression toward the Associate of
Science Nursing Degree.
NOTE: The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) protects the public by screening applicants
for licensure in order to identify potentially unsafe practitioners. The law provides for denial of
licensure for crimes or acts, which are substantially related to nursing qualifications, functions or
duties. Conviction of any offenses other than minor traffic violations must be reported to the Board of
Registered Nursing at the time of application for licensure. Business and Professions Code 480 and
Nurse Practice Act article 3 section 2761. For clarification contact the ADN Program Director or the
Board of Registered Nursing, P.O Box 944210, Sacramento, California, 94244-2100, (916) 322-3350.
NOTE: Providing a Social Security Number (SSN): Pursuant to Section 30(c) of the Business and
Professions code the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) will not process any application
for licensure unless the applicant provides a United State SSN. The Nursing Practice Act provides for
a unified examination and licensing application. Once an applicant passes the examination, a license
is automatically issued. Under these circumstances the BRN cannot accept applications for the
examination and licensure without a SSN.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Employment in the field for registered nurses is excellent locally and nationally. The registered nurse
enjoys a well-compensated, rewarding, highly flexible career, which should continue in the future. This
field is expanding and growth in the job market is projected.
2
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the program, the graduate will be able to function as:
1. Provider of Care – The graduate will provide safe nursing care through therapeutic nursing
interventions to clients with critical and complex disease states.
2. Manager of Care – The graduate will provide safe nursing care consistently utilizing critical
thinking skills for clients who have critical and complex disease states.
3. Member of Profession – The graduate will consistently demonstrate accountability, advocacy,
legal/ethical and caring behavior, and responsibility for one’s own professional growth,
behavior, and form/informal education.
ENROLLMENT ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for enrollment in the program, the student must meet the following criteria:
Graduation from an accredited high school (graduates from outside the United states must have
transcripts evaluated by an approved independent agency), or successful completion of General
Education Development (GED) or California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE). These
requirements are defined by the current Nurse Practice Act, Title 16, California Code of
Regulations, Section 1412.
A grade of “C” or better in the following Prerequisites:
o ENGL P101A (Expository Composition) 4 units at Porterville College, or equivalent
course at another accredited college.
o ANAT P110 (Human Anatomy) 4 units at Porterville College, or equivalent course at
another accredited college
o PHYL P101 (Introductory Physiology) 5 units at Porterville College, or equivalent 4-5
semester unit physiology course at another accredited college.
o MICR P106 (Microbiology) 5 units at Porterville College, or equivalent 4-5 semester unit
microbiology course at another accredited college.
Scholastic Eligibility with a Pre-requisite Validation score of 75%
o Scholastic eligibility is determined through the California Community College Chancellors
Office Pre-requisite Validation approved formula (SB 1309).
o The Pre-requisite Validation score designates the probability of successfully completing
the ADN program
o The Pre-requisite Validation formula uses the following criteria:
1. Core Biology GPA – all Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology courses taken at
the college level.
2. Core Biology repetitions – the number of times a student has repeated a Core Biology
course including withdrawals.
3. English GPA – all credit English course grades regardless of the level of the course.
4. Overall GPA– the college GPA as it appears on college transcripts.
NOTE: Higher grades than the minimum “C” will increase a student’s overall success in meeting the
Pre-requisite Validation score of 75%. Students who do not meet this criteria will be offered a
remediation program.
3
NOTE: Porterville College Associate Degree Nursing Program will implement the Multi-Criteria
Selection and Ranking process for student selection (AB 548) for the March 2017 application
period. Refer to program website for more information.
ENROLLMENT PROCESS Eligible students are selected for the program according to the following steps:
Pre-enrollment applications and deadlines for the LVN-to-ADN Program are available from
the Health Careers Division or from the program’s website.
Only students who meet the educational and pre-nursing requirements and follow the pre-
enrollment procedures will be considered for the program. Meeting all these requirements does
not guarantee acceptance into the program.
Selection is based on a random selection process from among the qualified applicants and is
subject to space availability. Students must reapply each semester. There is no waiting list.
All qualified applicants will be placed in a random selection resulting in the conditional
acceptance of enough students to fill the program enrollment seats, plus selection of 20
alternates.
All conditionally enrolled students and alternates will be required to complete the latest edition
of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS), developed by the Assessment Technologies
Institute, LLC (ATI). The TEAS is a state approved nursing assessment test. Students must
rank at or above the average composite percentage of 62% to be eligible for enrollment into
the program. Students who do not meet the 62% minimum score on the first attempt will be
offered a TEAS remediation program.
Transfer-In-Policy: Students wishing to transfer into any semester of the Nursing program are
asked to contact the Health Careers Department at 559-791-2321. The office can give you
current information on availability of space.
NOTE: As a condition of enrollment into the Nursing program, the student is required to have a
physical examination, inoculations, TB clearance, drug screen, background check, and current BLS
card (at the student’s expense).
NOTE: The student is responsible for providing uniforms, laboratory fees, necessary equipment and
transportation to off-campus laboratory locations. There are morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend
clinical experiences that may change with limited notice.
SCHOLASTIC ELIGIBILITY REMEDIATION PROGRAM
Students who do not meet the scholastic eligibility requirements of a Pre-requisite Validation Cut-
Score of 75% may successfully complete all of the following remediation requirements to be
considered eligible for enrollment into the ADN Program:
1. Completion of EDUC P076 – Effective Learning Skills with a “B” grade or higher
2. Completion of NURS P110 – Pathophysiology with a “B” grade or higher
3. Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course with a “C” grade or higher or

4. Completion of NURS P100 – Strategies for Nursing Success with a “C” or higher
4
TEAS REMEDIATION PROGRAM
Students who fail to achieve a composite score of 62% or higher must remediate before retaking the
exam. There must be 90 days between attempts. All students receive a detailed analysis of exam results
from ATI that directs students to specific study areas. Refer to Health Careers website for additional
TEAS preparation and additional remediation guidelines.
*Successful completion of the Remediation Program must be completed within 12-months of
initial application to the ADN Program to be considered eligible. Students wishing to be re-
