2013 LANDSCAPE PROJECT: PHENOMENA

PHENOMENA is a natural con9nuing of ‘Lines All-‐Ready There’ project, of f 2012, which is made up of a number of prints drawn

from real as well as unreal aerial territories. There is a set of new images which are going to populate Phenomena landscapes:

ancient cosmological maps, images of the Cosmos, botanical drawings and landscapes – where the almost invisible microcosmic,

close world intertwines with the far out, almost unreal macro cosmos.

The work’s inten9on/purpose is to inves9gate the reality in its 3 base quali9es: impermanent, incomplete and unsubstan9al

which aim at tracing the Middle way, where the phenomena are ‘neither existent nor non existent, neither both nor any of them’

where ‘form is emp9ness, and emp9ness is form’*, maWer is space, the apparent substan9ality is unsubstan9al, the illusion of

what is defined is undetermina9ve. This uncertainty molds the work’s content and guides the prac9ce methodology. The

drawings unroll themselves; organically compose themselves of lines, marks and textures windingly elaborated and of gestural

traces ploughed in the white ground of the paper sheet. The drawings are unplanned travels, aWen9vely listening upon each area,

each element showing the direc9on of the next.

There is a con9nuous dialogue of herbs’ lines, which gives rise to wind shades, transmu9ng themselves in dust constella9ons,

mel9ng in watery modula9ons, in steamy textures that strike upon the leaves’ veins, rocks sedimenta9ons, that some9mes are

brutally erased and suspended in a senseless void, ... suddenly, the leaves' vibra9ons ramify in the paper grain. This is a path of

maWer and spirit, where space is the protagonist enhanced by form.

2012 AERIAL MAPS ROJECT: Lines All–Ready There

Aerial maps project: ‘Lines all ready there’ – is a set of print drawings taken from immense territories’ aerial images. The distance

conveys to them an almost abstract, however real visual quality. In these territories we find a profusion of lines ‘already made’,

lines drawn on the landscape. The work is based on an archaeological way of looking at things that reencounters and reveals the

lines that ‘are already there’. In a process of synthesis and selec9on of the infinitely complex that reveals itself as we travel over

it, force lines reveal themselves, lines that mark the landscape structure, marks that modulate the water, fire, and wind streams,

traces that define geographical boundaries, stains that carve geological forma9ons.

In a laborious engraving, infinite marks are traced which through accumula9on or dissipa9on create tonal shades in a drawing

exclusively made out of line.

The composi9on tracks natural movements of oceans and river trails, the mountains’ erosion modula9ons, the earth’s lava traces.

The organic and inorganic growth of the city lines flow into and tear off the natural landscape. These are real territories'

wanderings, unique images of one place, and tracings of almost real territories, combina9ons and collage of mul9ple places,

conjunc9ons of new territories, reinven9ons of the world seen from the vast space-‐sky.

2011 PANORAMIC PROJECT – HORIZON LINE

The horizon line between earth/sea and sky is a constant issue pervading these drawings of panoramic landscapes.

The horizon line is an abstrac9on, it is a contact zone of space with maWer, and, as such, an endless field of possibili9es to

inves9gate insubstan9ality issues. This is the guideline cross cumng all the panoramic works.

Light games either blur the horizon line between space and earth, or emphasize it underlining the indefini9on, the impossibility to

establish clear, substan9al boundaries between, sky, earth and sea.

The extremely extended drawing formats of Panoramic emphasize the spacious vastness, together with a vast tonal paleWe, from

the deep blacks to transparent greys that different types of charcoal combina9ons offer. In the process of drawing on paper the

charcoal material quali9es turn into dust. This is a material that manifests immateriality.

NOTA BIOGRÁFICA

ISABEL CORREIA, 1974

BIO

Got a degree at ESAD das Caldas da Rainha 2000. Won a Scholarship from Erasmus Program in Contemporary Art at Nomngham Trent

University 1999. Post Gradua9on in Percep9ve Pedagogy of Movimento at Universidade Moderna 2001. Training in Drawing at Ar.co,

Sociedade Nacional Belas Artes, Interna9onal School of Art in Italy and St. Mar9ns School in London. Training in Contemporary dance in

C.E.M, Forum Dança and F.C.Gulbenkian in Lisbon and Butoh dance in Mamu Center, Germany; Body Weather Farm, Japan. Taught Sculpture

and Art Management at Universidade de Évora in 2001-‐2003. Developed sculpture and performance art work, did exhibi9ons and

performances between 1997-‐2002. Concluded the 4 year Tradi9onal Tibetan Buddhist Retreat in 2003-‐2007. As a guest teacher, co-‐led art

and medita9on sessions at Universidade de Lisboa, Portuguese Buddhist Union, as well as other schools in 2008-‐2010. Was an assistant

teacher at Educa9onal Service in Museu do Oriente, 2008-‐2011. Delivered lectures on Art and Medita9on in several places, 2008,

Contemporary Drawing at Nextart in 2011 and Introduc9on to Buddhism and Buddhist Art at Museu Oriente in 2014. Since 2008 is a drawing

teacher at Nextart. Currently, researches, teaches and works in the area of drawing.

ART WORK + PEDAGOGY

Between 1997 – 2002 developed installa9ons and performances in Portugal, Italy, U.K and Japan interac9ng in public areas, which hold the

involving space as well as its cultural and social context as an inner element of the work itself, together with a reason for reflec9on upon the

art work’s status.

In 2001 rises an interest for Buddhism, Eastern Art and medita9on, which will lead the nature of the work towards a dematerializa9on,

ephemerality and formal minimiza9on, emphasizing the crea9ve process itself, which reach its peak in 2003 in a four year Tradi9onal Tibetan

Buddhist Retreat. From 2008 on devotes herself to the research of the influence of medita9on on art, in the percep9on process and visual

crea9on. Starts a new developing work in drawing, approaches the landscape theme as a privileged field to inves9gate reality. Develops a

body of work where she interrelates macro and micro hearth landscape with the cosmological universe, exploring phenomenological issues

on the absence of substan9ality of maWer, 9me impermanency, indeterminacy of existence. These characteris9cs guide the content and the

process of work. As a drawing teacher aoer 2008, has been deepening issues of percep9on and doing research on pedagogical

methodologies which enhance recogni9on, access and integra9on of a sensi9ve and precise visual percep9on.
