Workshop UNSOLLICITED ARCHITECTURE This event was organized in close collaboration with Columbia University's Studio X lab Rio. A dutch architect was matched to a brazilian architect (office) who was located in one of the four neighborhoods: Flamengo, Gloria, Humaitá and Lapa. The teams developed a range of unsollicited strategies which were published in the national paper O Globo.

Workshop FLOODINGa 5 day workshop on city floodings, organized in close collaboration with São Paulo Lab / Columbia University New York. Three groups, guided by dutch and brazilian architects, created strategies and site specific designs to deal with the recurring floodings of São Paulo’s riverfront neighbourhoods.

Visiting school MICRO-REVOLUTIONSGarrido, a former boxingchamp started his own boxing academy under a viaduct. There's more to it than just getting in shape, its a process of human recycling, homeless and junkies become new and ready for society. The intense 8 day workshop explored the possibilities of the designer to improve this initiative through the design of micro interventions. Using parametric design tools and digital fabrication techniques. In collaboration with AA School of Architecture.

Instant Downtown

Fargo, USA 2010 @ SMVTeam: Marco Vermeulen, Pavel Savine + Tim Aarsen● Status: Competition design

In order to vitalize the city center we have chosen a strategy of urban condensation: Instant Downtown. We propose a fully programmed dense urban block which gives Fargo’s downtown an identifiable, mature skyline. At the same time we consider the scale and function of the historical buildings with a shopping layer on Broadway. In addition, we boost the number of downtown inhabitants, and create a one of kind elevated urban activity park. Separating the shopping plaza and the urban activity deck we find 500 (public and private) parking spaces on a continuous ramp fully integrated into the block. No more parking on street level, no more ugly street front parking garages.

The new skyline relates to the three scales of the city

Whilst Broadway and the mall are more orientated towards shopping and retail, the roof of the parking ramp doubles as an urban activity deck which consists out of five sloping levels. The deck is programmed with playgrounds, sandboxes, greenery, an ice rink and a basketball court. From this level nine towers and blocks between five and seventeen stories high are accessed, combining a mix of offices, apartments and student housing. This guarantees round the clock activity on the urban deck. Windows in a wind protecting wall around the deck frame beautiful views towards the surrounding area.

Instant Downtown

The new skyline relates to the three scales of the city

Currently most downtown blocks in Fargo are 50% parking. Asphalt is the norm. We propose a design which fully integrates parking into the urban program and creates space for street orientated activity. An elevated continuous parking ramp is winding up the block and makes parking an experience in itself. The triangular courtyards created by the parking scheme form the basis of the layout of the shopping mall and the urban activity deck and define space for escalators that connect these layers. The Instant Downtown strategy meets the needs of Fargo with a mixed use, condensed block which fills the current void with a vibrant heart. The block creates an image of a lively American downtown on an urban scale, while continuing and intensifying the activity on street level.

Living Landscapes 1.0

High density living in a landscape

Living Landscape 1.0 is the first design in a series, in which the landscape experience of the house is the central theme. The traditional Dutch housing typology with a back-to-back orientation at a density of approximately 36 dwellings per hectare forms the starting point of the design. For reasons of feasibility, we strive to achieve a similar density. Living Landscape 1.0 dwellings are not back-to-back situated, but front to back. Therefore all the dwellings and gardens have an optimal orientation towards the sun. The plots also faces the street sideways, which gives the gardens a connection with the street. This enhances the liveliness in the neighbourhood, unlike the conventional configuration where the private life mostly takes place in the private (back-to-back) gardens. For children, this extension of the garden into the street offers a lot of additional playing opportunities. By shifting the houses relative to one another semi-detached houses are created. The sculptural roofs of the houses are also the visual boundaries of the private gardens. From the living room it appears that the horizon has lifted, which enlarges the garden. All the roofs are covered with grass to enhance this effect.

APEC 2012 Summit masterplan

Vladivostok, Russia 2008 @ VHP s+a+lTeam: Jacques Vink, Pedro Pinto de sa Borges, Auzie Triratnamurti, Paul Stavert, Ward Mouwen, Andrea Abita+ Tim Aarsen● Status: Concept design

Russia is to host the APEC in 2012. The economic summit for Asian countries will take place in Vladivostok. The planned event has given rise to a huge, ambitious programme of actions, not only for the summit itself but also for permanent improvements to Vladivostok’s civic and regional structure. The programme includes amenities like a Conference Centre, International Press Centre, Theatre and Opera House, Hotels, World Trade Centre, Exhibition Centre, Oceanographic Museum, Medical Centre, Sports Facilities, Shopping Mall and Parking Facilities. Infrastructural improvements will include the expansion and reconstruction of the motorway network, the airport, harbour facilities, and there will also be urban and landscape design projects.

For the APEC 2012 a new conference center had to be designed. Based on the typological shape of the gathering/meeting, the circle, the building is organized as a continuous loop. At both ends the volume is lifted, to create the entrance and on the other side a beautiful panoramic view of the bay. The volume surrounds a large outdoor square which symbolizes the agora, the people’s place.

Masterplan Eko Atlantic

Lagos, Nigeria 2009 @ Royal HaskoningTeam: Urban van Aar, Demet Sert, Jens Jorritsma, Auzi Triratnamurti + Tim Aarsen● Status: Under construction

Eko Atlantic is a dynamic new city that will rise from the Atlantic Ocean, adjacent to Victoria Island in Lagos, Nigeria the biggest and fastest growing city in West Africa. It will be built on land that is being reclaimed from the sea.

Eko Atlantic will become home to at least 250,000 residents, with commuter volume expected to exceed 150,000 people daily.

In essence it is a huge reclamation project, replacing land that was lost during a hundred years of severe coastal erosion. Complex marine works engaging world-renowned consultants and contractors to roll back surging waves from the Atlantic Ocean have already begun.

Valuable land that was lost to generations of Nigerians has started to reappear, expanding every day.

Eko Atlantic will grow into a vibrant, twenty-first century city, larger than Victoria Island, and will help to establish Lagos as the financial capital of Africa.

Wooden eco passage

Venlo, the Netherlands 2009 @ SMVTeam: Marco Vermeulen + Tim Aarsen● Status: Preliminary design

The eco passage consists out of a pedestrian walkway and a bicycle path, making a combined width of 25 meters. The bridge is constructed out of (indigenous) whole tree trunks, which literally adds to the concept of nature crossing the road.

The beams are constructed out of 2 to 5 logs, which have a tapered shape. These logs, after removal of the bark, have a diameter of at least 300 mm and the width increases with 15 mm every meter. With a computerized mill the connection joints are precisely cut out, similar to a tongue and groove connection. The logs are stacked on top of each other, turning them 180 degrees every other log. This enhances the strength of the construction.

The thickness of the soil which is needed for the plants and trees determines the height of the construction beams and therefore how many logs are needed. Because the thickness of the soil varies, the cross section is asymmetrical. At the location of the thickest layer of soil, the distance between the columns is the smallest.

Masterplan Business Park Vnukovo

Moscow, Russia 2009 @ VHP s+a+;Team: Dirk van Peijpe, Jacques Vink,Auzi Triratnamurti, Jens Jorritsma+ Tim Aarsen● Status: Masterplan approved

The scheme of the business park is derived from the spatial composition of the Krelim. A wall wraps around the large building blocks and encloses an introverted semi-public space. The largest part of the parking is located outside the wall, surrounding the business complex. In the courtyard only VIP traffic is allowed.

Masterplan Business Park Vnukovo

The four U-shaped blocks are built on top of a parking garage. The roof of the garage is covered in grass, allowing the offices to have a green view. The plint of the garage is programmed with shops and cafés.

Pilot project Watersquares Bloemhofplein

Bloemhofplein is a textbook example of a central neighbourhood square within a traditional urban layout and is eminently suitable as a central water square. The water storage volume of the square is limited, but still substantial (approximately 950 m2) and this means that the surrounding streets can drain directly into the square.

The Bloemhofplein approach can serve as an example for the many comparable squares in this urban district, whereby the significance of the pilot transcends the physical impact. Bloemhofplein is presently a multi-functional square and, as a water square, it will also appeal to a diverse group of people who will use it to sit, exercise, play games or simply spend leisure time there. The new water square will become a representative, central space in the neighbourhood.

Village Park

Stampersgat, the Netherlands 2010 @ SMVTeam: Marco Vermeulen, Rutger Wirtz +Tim Aarsen● Status: Under construction

Between the site of the sugar factory and the village of Stampersgat, we designed a miniature landscape park. The park is made out of landforms which are constructed using beet soil, a rest product of the sugar factory. The landforms work as a sound barrier as well as a visual barrier. The park will also serve as a connecting element between the village and the existing pedestrian routes along the Mark-Vlietcanal. The park is part of the primary visual quality zone of the het Agro & Food Cluster Nieuw Prinsenland, a large-scale greenhouse and industrial zone in the nearby Prinsenland polder.

The park serves two types of pedestrians: those who want to go to the Van-Aken hiking path along the canal and those who just want to go for a small walk inside the park. The three sculptural landforms create interesting spaces which offer alternatives for pedestrians. The obvious simplicity of the design together with the gracious curves and lines makes for an interesting play of depth and a constant changing perspective.

Almere, the Netherlands 2009 @ VHP s+a+lTeam: Jacques Vink, Andrea Abita, Auzi Triratnamurti, Piero Medici + Tim Aarsen● Status: Competition entry

For a housing competition in the Amsterdam-suburb of Almere we designed a sustainable highrise building. The key element of the design is the interconnecting of the buildings atria. The tower consist out of five ‘communities’, each surrounding an atrium. Within this atrium different activities take place which all relate to the activitiy of greenhouse gardening. All the dwellings have their frontdoor to one of these indoor gardens.

Rainwater is collected on the roofs of the tower and the parking garage. The water is used for the grey water system in the apartments as well as irrigating the indoor gardens. After it has passed through the building it is filtered in the two helophyte filters in the parking garage, before it is returned to the surrounding landscape.

Agro & Food Cluster Nieuw Prinsenland

Dinteloord, the Netherlands 2009 @ SMVTeam: Marco Vermeulen + Tim Aarsen● Status: Under construction

The site of the Agro & Food Cluster (AFC) Nieuw Prinsenland, a large scale development of greenhouse cultivation and industry to the east of the village of Dinteloord, is approximately 600 hectares. This includes the existing terrain of the sugar factory. The project deals with the (visual) integration of this development into the surrounding landscape.

Inspired by the dikes and forts which are very common in the surrounding area, we introduce earthworks which surround the AFC creating a large green collar. The sugar factory supplies the ground which is necessary for the construction of the earthworks. It is a side product of

the process of producing sugar, approximately 80.000 cubic meters a year. The green collar doesn’t attempt to hide the AFC, it rather tries to soften the often harsh border between the built environment (the greenhouses and industrial buildings) and the horizontal flat landscape. The collar forges the buildings into one visual entity.

The shape of the earthworks can be diverse and is mainly focussed on the visual experience from within the landscape and the villages as well as from the highway. Internally the AFC is organized through the logic of spatial optimization. A large part of the collar consists out of open water reservoirs which are used for irrigation. This results in the collar, besides being mere visual, to be functional as well. In essence we are dealing here with a challenging 12 kilometre long land-art piece!

In this new industrial development alot of attention is going to sustainability. In order to try to reduce energy consumption (of natural resources) and managing the waste cycles, it was necessary to map all the energy and material flows of the project. The presence of the sugar factory became essential in realizing the much needed water bassins for the greenhouses. The construction of a biogasifier on location will provide the area with green gas and will reduce transport miles.

Revitalization project Hofplein overpass

In 1908 the first electrical train tracks in Holland operated from Rotterdam Hofplein to Scheveningen. The first 1950 meters were constructed out of solid reinforced concrete arches, elevating the track above street level. The result was a unique overpass which in the following years rapidly got absorbed by the expanding residential neighbourhoods of Rotterdam Noord. Now, almost a century later, the train stops. For good.

This graduation project deals with the reinterpretation of infrastructural heritage and its impact on the built environment.

ARCHIPRIXNOMINATION

All the interventions proposed are to be perceived as possible schemes for organizing this large strip of public space. It deals with creating public space but also making space public. A whole new layer is added to the neighbourhood and with it a whole new system of networks and relations. Through the site-related interventions and their specific visual qualities we have made 7 proposals for 7 different locations, each having its own specific appearance and translation of the aura of the object. The predilection for colour and exuberant vegetation creates an image which wishes to radiate atmospheric qualities which are envisioned for the specific place, creating an intense sometimes banal connection between the existing and the proposed, interweaving public and private space. The aura of the object and the qualities and shortcomings of the site were decisive in the creation of a conceptual design proposal for the re-use of this two kilometre long stretch of urban infrastructural heritage and it was all done with respect of the past but with an eye to the future.
