“play is a necessary development phrase in the education of the child.“

(Friedrich Froebel , cited in Architecture for children by Sarah Scott, 2010, p.7)

The concept of this early learning centre is to emphasise the discovery and learning of children through play. Thus the building is divided into 3 different segments according to three basic domains of learning: cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective(attitude).

Year 2 Architecture Design Studio: Air at The University of Melbourne (2015)Group ProjectDight Falls, Melbourne, Australia3D Model : Rhinoceros 5.0, GrasshopperPhysical Model : Laser cut

BRIEF:Design an architectural intervention using paramet-ric design software that will create new possibilities of life that is better than the existing technology

Page 13: PORTFOLIO 2015

13

cONcEPT:To replace the current Dight Falls’ existing vertical slot fishway with a structure that is much more aesthetically pleasing, yet more functionally practical than the current concrete mass.

The design intention is to keep the major elements that are necessary in a Fishway as designed by Engineers, but transforming the wall shape to maximise its efficiency.

ExISTING FISHWAY AT DIGHT FALLS PROPOSED DESIGN

Page 14: PORTFOLIO 2015

14

DETAIL MODEL: cOMPARTMENTScale 1:40

This section model shows how each compartment in the fishway would work out, with 2 curly fins sep-arated every 2 metres. The goal of each fin is to slow the water down for the fish to be able to swim upstream around Dight’s Falls.

SITE MODELScale 1:200

The powder printed model shows how the proposed fishway would look on the site. The organic form of the fishway would nicely stand out in the middle of the site.

Page 15: PORTFOLIO 2015

15

PROTOTYPEScale 1:1

The prototype is made in the original size to show how the curly form would look like in reality. Once the final 3D form is set in the software, we flattened the mesh by separating it into strips to be laser cut. Next, we connect the strips using rivets joints that are strong and durable.

concept:

The concept generated from the aim to connecting above and below space, in which the height difference is 5 metres.

Periscope gives an optical illusion so that people from below are able to see what’s happening above, and vice versa. When they get into the dark periscope, they will expect to see the earth underground, yet they will be surprised by the view of the sky above.

This will create indirect communication between people at the top and below, which previously could not occur.

Page 20: PORTFOLIO 2015

The materials chosen emphasise the idea of secrecy.

The lines of timber battens camouflaged with the vertical lines of tree trunks surround it,

while the black steel gives complete opaqueness to restrict light from getting into the secret space.

year: 2015title: Follow me

the theme was taken from Bible verse in Luke 9:23-24, which is Jesus’ commandment for christians to Follow him.

coLourthe word ‘me’ refers to Je-sus, thus it is written in red to emphasise that Jesus is the main focus in the event. meanwhile the word ‘follow’ is written in black to represent sinners who have to follow Jesus.

Logothe line in the middle of the word forms an arrow pointing right at the word ‘me’. the arrow symboliz-es the direction in which christians must follow, which is to follow Jesus.

BRIEF:Poster for Easter Youth camp at Reformed Evangelical church in Melbourne, Australia

year: 2016title: all is vanity?

the theme was taken from Bible verse in ecclesiastes 2:11“then i considered all that my hands had done and the toil i had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.”

Logothe hourglass logois a metaphor for ‘vanity’.the top part of the hour-glass shows the glimmers offered by this world, which happened to be useless as it would turn to dust in the bottom part of the hour-glass.
