The modest budget called for technical and material innovation. The design includes an external skin of sun-shades, which provides protec-tion from the elements whilst creating a recognisable presence for the organisation. Other considerations included designing thresholds and selectinginternalfinishesthatwerelessformalinordertocreatemoreopen and inviting spaces throughout.

I was involved in the design development and construction documen-tation phases of this project, working primarily on plans, external and internalelevations, specificationsanddoorandwindowschedules.

PILBARA VERNACULAR HANDBOOK

CODA (2011)

CODA was engaged by LandCorp to undertake research and analysis into responsible planning and design in the Pilbara. I was one of the main researchers and authors of the resulting handbook, which will be published as a reference resource for planners, developers, architects andurbandesigners, aswellasshireandgovernmentofficers.

The challenge of this project was to identify sustainable design and con-struction practices that are suitable, affordable and feasible in the harsh climate and extreme remoteness of the region. During our research, we found inspiration in the instinctive attempts taken in older Pilbara towns to add climate responsive elements to buildings.

The handbook provides a general overview of the Pilbara region, along with a detailed analysis of four towns - Onslow, Newman, Port Hedland and Dampier. It provides an analysis of past, present and expected conditions for each town, including social, economic, environmental and culturalfactors, outliningspecificstrategiesthatrespondtothese.

MOVE APARTMENTS

North Coogee, Western AustraliaCODA (2010 - In Progress)

This entry level apartment project is located 300 metres from the beach in NorthCoogee.Thedesignaimedtoreflectthepostindustriallandscapeof the area through the use of robust, context appropriate materials that could withstand the often harsh coastal environment.

Various passive, sustainable initiatives like improved cross ventilation, dual aspect apartments and allocated space for visitors’ bicycles were incorporated into the design. An outdoor room, or extended balcony, becomes a focal point in each apartment, acting as an extension of the indoor living spaces. As well as activating the building from the street front, they also work to contribute to a sense of community within the development.

I was involved in the design development stage of the project, working primarily on elevations, plans, 3D modelling and rendering.

Working under a se-nior architect, I was involved in every stage of this project from concept design through to construction documentation. This included design-ing and detailing the kitchen and service areas, selecting materials and equipment, 3D modelling, preparing client presentations and minutes, DA submission and the planning of services.

Todrawattentionto thecaféandcreateasenseofspaciousness, ourdesign concept proposed a seamless connection between the interior and exterior. Our project incorporates a timber arbour which extends from the footpath, over the 6 metre forecourt to the shop front and then con-tinues internally to create a ceiling frame. This seamless connection was furtherstrengthenedthroughtheuseofgreyconcreteflagstonesforboththeinteriorandexteriorflooring.

Recycled materials were specified throughout, including salvagedflagstones, reclaimedpineforthearbourandtheclient’srecycledwinecrates. Equipment was also largely second-hand and consideration was given to the use of low VOC paints and stains.

WELCOME SPACE

Fremantle, Western AustraliaCODA (2010-2011)

The brief was to design a new administration and reception space for the Fremantle Arts Centre. The space needed to be open and inviting, whilst accommodating a bookshop, information hub, lounge and gala event space.

ThefinaldesignreferencesFremantle’sportsidelocationandprovidesacontemporary contrast to the Gothic exterior of the building. The design is mobile and allows the space to be easily transformed according to the needs of various events.

I worked with a senior architect to prepare the initial concept design for the project, which was successful in winning the invited competition. This presentation included a site analysis, precedent analysis, sketch design, 3D model and material and colour proposals.

PROJECT TEAM:Kieran WongLisa ShineJess HuntAlex Raynes-Goldie

The significance of Perry Lakes in the collective memory of Western Australians, from the 1962 Commonwealth Games through to its place as an iconic public sporting venue is considerable. For many West Australians, Perry Lakes provided an intensely personal study of the heroic clarity, openness and beauty of modernist architecture. It was indeed a monument to its time and to its purpose.

Landcorp engaged CODA to assist in the development of Design Guidelines and built form outcomes for the Perry Lakes site. CODA contributed to public presentations that clearly outlined the design principles envisage for the site in order to garner approval for the development. We used our past experience and design focus to provide design outcomes worthy of its unique position within the Western Australian community/psyche.

The stadium nature of the pre-existing layout limited the options for lot layout and size, as well as the activation of many ESD principles. To address this, CODA undertook extensive design modelling and built form testing, including shadow analysis and a study of the various possibilities for lot development. As a result of the site’s heritage requirements, the existing landform had to be retained and a number of infrastructure and drainage constraints had to be incorporated into the plan.

As the Perry Lakes Statutory Framework was to become an Act of Parliament the Design Guidelines, Detailed Area Plans and other planning documents had to conform to all statutory requirements and protocol.

PROJECT TEAM:Emma WilliamsonSally WeertsAlex Raynes-Goldie

CODA were engaged to design a new administration and reception space for the Fremantle Arts Centre. This was a bespoke project that drew its inspiration from its port-side Fremantle location, and provided a contemporary contrast with the Gothic exterior of the building in which its located. The space is used to service the multiple administration functions required of a cultural centre the size of the Fremantle Arts Centre. It needed to be inviting and open whilst also providing room for the bookshop, information hub, a lounge and gala event space.

The cylindrical profile of the main desk reflects the liquid transport tanks that line the Port; this industrial theme is carried through the material choice and the mobility of each of the components of the design. The space can be easily transformed according to the needs of each event. Importantly for a creative space, a sense of playfulness has been incorporated through the application of colour on the plinths as well as in the plastic inserts for the bookshelves.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

I was involved in the design development and contract administration phasesof thissalesofficefor thePerryLakessubdivision.Theprojecthad the following objectives: touch the ground lightly; reduce the carbon footprint; reduce running costs; reduce the delivery time; and incorporate traditional practices and materials.

The design solution was a modular system made from structural insulated panels (SIPs). SIPs Industries constructed the building in their factory, disassembled it for transport and reassembled it on site. The proj-ect was awarded the HIA WA Greensmart Partnership Award 2011 for the collaborative approach taken to achieve innovative design outcomes.

COMMUNITY. DESIGN. INITIATIVE.

East Scarborough Storefront. Toronto, CanadaArchiTEXT, Sustainable.TO (2010 - under construction)

The Kingston Galloway Orton Park neighbourhood of Toronto is best known for its gang violence and motel strip. The Community. Design. Initiative. aims to change that through developing a community space which supports grassroots, sustainable initiatives and provides food security for the inner suburban neighbourhood.

The project involves the re-design of an existing community centre (a for-mer police station) into an eco-food hub. Local youth have been engaged since the beginning, involved in every aspect of the process from de-sign through to construction. Among it’s sustainable features, the project incorporates a community garden and kitchen, rainwater and irrigation systems, bicycle parking and composting infrastructure.

I worked with ArchiTEXT and Sustainable.TO to prepare drawings for city planning approval.

WET SHELTER

Wellington, New ZealandVictoria University (2008)

My final year thesis project explored the ways in which traditionalinstitutionalbuildingscouldbere-conceivedandre-configuredtoaccom-modate contemporary approaches to supportive housing.

Using the former Wellington Fever Hospital as a foundation, the proj-ect explored issues of accessibility, privacy, surveillance and, ultimately, power and control. Through an academic literature review and one-on-one interviews with architects, social workers and residents, I developed design strategies that could support and empower both residents and staff.

As an exercise in environmentally-responsive design, this project used site analysis and building performance modelling to explore and implement passive design strategies. Design solutions were modelled in Revit and SketchUp and tested for thermal, daylighting and acoustic performance in Ecotect.

Thermal analyses indicated the use of concrete blocks with external fibreglassinsulationastheprimarywallmaterial.Largeexpansesofnorthfacingglazingandconcretefloorscreatetheopportunityforpassivesolarheating in winter, while large eaves regulate summer solar access and provide shelter from the rain. ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN ASSESSMENT

Wellington, New ZealandVictoria University (2007)

This project investigates the reduction of a house’s energy needs and consumption through the application of environmental design techniques and the thoughtful consideration of building services. The overall environ-mental concept for the house was to illustrate that increased user comfort and energy autonomy can be achieved without compromising a building’s desired aesthetic and design.

The project involved analysing an existing house and proposing mea-sures to enhance its performance. This included detailing a solar hot watersystem, greywatersystem, specifyingenergyefficientappliancesand lighting and choosing materials and insulation based on acoustic and thermal performance.
