Water is a very fundamental and central part of life in India. People start their daily activity with bathing as a part of ritual. People utilize the water in numerous ways to meet their needs. Their rhythm of lives is set by the cycle of dry and monsoon seasons. The project was envisioned in the context of potential natural fi ltration system existed and used by the local fi shing villages near the site.
![Page 8: Portfolio](https://reader031.vdocument.in/reader031/viewer/2022020321/568bf04c1a28ab89338f2aa9/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The idea of fi ltration has been translated in three different cate-gories; school curriculum, natural environmental system, and social context.
Filtraion in the school curriculumThe students are considered the initial input into the school, and - fi ltering their knowledge via the curriculum - they learn how to design and build and understand what they are developing. The Design Build studio, which is the keystone of the curriculum, allows students to get hans-on experience before they enter the real world and become true ‘output’ to the society.

Filtration in the natural environmental systemThe local fi shing villiage developed a natural cleansing system which water from a settlement pond goes to a cleansing pond housing aquatic plants that nourish, aerate, and remove chemicals and metals before the water fl ows to a clean pond where they grow fi sh. Adapting this local natural system, developing a similar system that utilizes the wetlands around the site.

Air - The prevailing breeze is towards the Northwest, which allows for cross building ventilation.
Seasonal Flooding - Around the campus and the fi ltration ponds, the built up ground ensures that the buildings are neither infi ltrated by water nor that the ponds are infi ltrated by sewage water. The only part that would be affected by the monsoon fl ooding is the public circulation that passes by the water under the student residents.
The source water from the site, being cleansed through the cleansing pond located on the east side of campus. This natural fi lter system allows people to practice their cleansing rituals on school grounds, especially on the Gats located at the center of the campus.

Filtration in the social environment The school engages with not only with student but also with the com-munity to play a role in changing the city. The campus provides a space for both students and the public to discuss community - wide issues, exchanging information and resources, and developing collbarative projects. Thus, this community center within the campus works as a fi lter for the social environment.

Concept sketch & diagrams
Respecting the urban grain of Chicago’s mile & 1/2 mile grid system, the west street side building remains recti-linear as its context buildings, yet hiding its jewelery box behind the curtain that slowly reveals when visitors are dropped off from I-290 highway on the west side of the site.

The ‘Jewelery Box’ or the East Building holds the 2 larg-est programs which are a large performace hall and a small performance hall.
The rectilinear West Building houses small cinema, me-diatheque, exhbition rooms, shops, cafe/restaurants and offi ces.
The two buildings are connected on the 3rd fl oor with cinema to performance hall, maintaining public visitors’ programmic circulation. The west building is connected with lasalle metra station on the 2nd level, easily ap-proachable for the visitors on foot.

Chuncheon, Korea
As an intern architectural designer at a contractor working on theproject by Kengo Kuma & Associates’ NHN Chuncheon TrainingInstitute in Korea, my job was to develope detailed construction draw-ings by understanding IPE wood installation process. The areas of the masterplan I dealt with involved roof and exterior deckings, louvers in the walkroad, and the benches around the site in the landscape.
