Ecological City
ObjectiveDesign a water reclamation center in a watershed of Los Angeles.
SiteLos Angeles River - Master plan ResearchFacility is located in the Verdugo wash opposite of Griffi th Park where the 2 and 5 FWY’s meet. More specifi cally within the intersection of Fletcher Dr. and San Fernando.
ChallengeIntegrate a hybrid water reclamation facility that will stop Los Angeles’ watershed problems by reclaiming both local sewage and L.A. River’s watershed. Using a system of swells and a localized living machine the facility is able to redistribute water that is normally wasted back to its community and also replenish Los Angeles’ depleting aquifers. These aquifers provide the city with clean drinking water ending its dependence on foreign water supplies thus creating a truly sustainable city.
ProcessLos Angeles’ water supply and water cleaning systems were researched. A Master plan was developed in order to determine the best placement for a water reclamation facility. The chosen site and surrounding community became an integral part of the water reclamation facility that absorbs its surrounds and disperses it back.

Bicycle Kitchen
ObjectiveThis projects goal was to transform an existing gasoline station into a bicycle kitchen and tourist center (a sort of bicycle rest stop and hub, where you can repair your bike, rest, and get citywide information) through a process of intervention. We had to keep a portion of the old building and interject our own design by a process of analysis, and scientifi c evidence, which we then used to create an architectural language.
SiteLocated at the end of the uncompleted 710 fwy in the city of alhambra, on westmont and valley blvd. The location is focused on promoting the bicycle as a means of transportation in a car dominated city.
ChallengeDesigning an intervention with a current building where the designer has to keep at least fi fty percent of its original state, while creating a bike culture that will apeal to all california drivers.
ProcessAnalysis of Site and surrounding community. Followed by a search for an external reference to a scientifi c phenomenon that has a specifi c process (such as The Hydrological Cycle) that can relate to our site. This reference is then translated into an architectural concept by creating a set of rules that is used in design.
ConceptX-Change and transformation thru the phase transition of water. (Transmutation)

RulesRules are made using a scientifi c reference and then interpreted into architectural ideas which are used as an organization for design.
Evaporation: Liquid to Gas
Scientifi c Defi nitionIf heat is applied to water its molecules temperature will rise and cause an excess of movement transforming the liquid into gas.
Architectural TerminologyMovement thru a space will continue until a dispersal point is found and space is distributed evenly.
Condensation: Gas To Liquid
Scientifi c Defi nitionAs molecules in a gaseous state of water start cooling the molecules start coming together and thus transforming gas into liquid.
Architectural TerminologyPoints of destination are needed to form convergence areas which are used to later disperse to other areas.
Freezing: Liquid To Solid
Scientifi c Defi nitionAs molecules in water cool they get to a point where the molecules freeze and transform the liquids into a solid.
Architectural TerminologyWhen directed thru a space movement will continue until a destination is reached where movement is then halted.
Melting: Soild to Liquid
Scientifi c Defi nitionWhen heat is applied to water its molecules temperature will rise and cause an excess of movement tranforming the liquid into gas.
Architectural TerminologyConstriction of space will cause movement into a less densely occupied space.

The bicycle kithcen would not be complete witout indivdually designed repair bays. The design of the bays are consistent with the concept of transmutaion and has the properties of the phase transition of water. They are readily movable and quickly unfold to become work staions, making it easy to just hang your bike up and use the repair table.

Eames Mod
ObjectiveDesign a module using a man made and natural structural system as your premises. Apply this module to a morphed eames bay to create a an inhabitable space.
SiteMade to be located anywhere
ChallengeBeing able to manipulate an eames structural grid systematically with the module that was created
ProcessUsing Rhino, Autocad, and Illustrator simultaneously create a modifi cation of the existing Eames House. Using only one bay 10’ x20’ x40’ apply a module to a transformed grid. Using diff erent scales your module should take on diff erent structural programs.
Eames Grid With Proportionate System Eames Grid With Systematic Strands That Gravitate Towarrds Proprtionate System
Using the eames house as a basis for our design i created a proportioning system based upon the house to create a modular bay. Then I further modifed the bay by using a system of tiling and stranding that were both evident in nature and man made systems.
Stranding systems can be seen on this spider web
Tiles Developed That Will Be Applied To Strands
A tiling system was used on the Burg Al Arab in Dubai.
