NEW YORK, Oct. 4, 2011-Scoot pink! For the second year in a row, Vespa is donating a limited-edition pink LX 150 scooter to several leading breast cancer charities to raise money for and heighten the awareness of the disease. The widely-recognized organizations include the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, Ralph Lauren Pink Pony, Bright Pink, and the Young Survival Coalition. Armed with the Vespa fueled fund-raising initiative, ranging from online auctions and special events to social media campaigns, riders are encouraged to increase awareness by participating in the contests provided by the charities.
Vespa invites all current and prospective two-wheel enthusiasts to participate in one or all of the following Breast Cancer Awareness programs. Throughout the month of October, pink supporters and riders can visit www.vespausa.com to find out how they can win a pink Vespa through the planned events and activities.
Vespa has been a symbol of freedom since its post-World War II introduction in Italy, making it a perfect pair for organizations and charities whose mission is to help women and men touched by breast cancer. Prior and leading up to the much anticipated launch of Vespa Pink Campaign, Vespa USA dealers were supplied with the limited-edition pink Vespa LX 150's. Vespa aims to build on the popularity of retail models by offering the donated scooters to catch the attention as well as the donations of supporters to heighten awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

At Eastchester Middle School in Eastchester, N.Y., where Tom Boissonnault teaches technology classes, the curriculum has evolved in recent years. In addition to learning about design and engineering, Mr. Boissonnault’s students are getting hands-on experience by restoring a vintage Vespa motor scooter.
This is the second year that the class has pursued a scooter restoration project. The plan began in the summer of 2008 while Mr. Boissonnault was working at home, rebuilding his own Vespa while his children played. It struck him that the simplicity of old scooters made them a perfect vehicle for students to learn about engines and electrical systems. “All along I had an old Vespa sitting in the loft of my barn that I bought just for parts,” Mr. Boissonnault, 41, said. “I brought it into school, and the project was born.”
The original project bike, a 1966 Vespa Allstate, was a real challenge. It had been recovered from the bottom of a lake, Mr. Boissonnault said, and was completely covered in rust. He bought it on eBay for only $202.
The restoration became a regular part of class, with a few hours each week devoted to it. Half of the Eastchester student body takes the technology course in the fall, and the other half in the spring. In order to allow all of the students a chance to take part, the work was divided up. The fall classes focused on the body, stripping the paint and removing rust. In the spring, students began
to rebuild the powertrain. Getting the work schedule right wasn’t easy, Mr. Boissonnault said. “We almost didn’t finish it.”
After the scooter was done, it was displayed at the last meeting of the Eastchester Board of Education. That’s news that should cheer
the heart of grease monkeys everywhere, who have noted that technological improvements mean that fewer people spend time working on their own vehicles. Students in particular are less likely to be exposed to the kinds of simple mechanical work that were once an object of curiosity that might have led to a hobby, or even a career.
The result, as Matthew B. Crawford noted in his book “Shop Class as Soulcraft,” is that many young people are unfamiliar with the basic mechanics underlying the machines they use every day. (Mr. Crawford’s book was excerpted in The New York Times Magazine, and reviewed in The Times here and here.)
"The technology class project garnered praise from parents as well as students," said Walter Moran, Eastchester’s principal. “It was a captivating project for the students, because it was very unlike what they would typically do in a classroom. It became a community effort building activity.”
Encouraged by the enthusiasm, Mr. Boissonnault set out this year to find a new scooter for his students. After searching for what seemed like forever online, he found what he was looking for at Scooter Source, a shop in Waynesville, Ohio. Last year’s project bike is now on display there.
To keep the program going, the school has considered auctioning or raffling off the restored machines. Indeed, one frustrating thing for young budding eighth-grade mechanics must be that they are too young to get driver’s licenses.“The worst part of the whole project,” Mr. Boissonnault said, “is that they can’t take it out for a ride.”

"Fast" isn’t the first adjective I’d use for a Vespa. Classic? Of course. Adorable? Truly. But with its new GTS 300 Super, Vespa came up with a bike that doubles as a can of whoop ass.
A more performance-oriented, higher displacement version of the Italian manufacturer’s bestselling midsize model the GTS 250, the 300 Super may look as innocuously huggable as the other six scoots in Vespa’s 2011 U.S. lineup. But that appearance is certainly deceiving. Hiding beneath the candy-colored steel unibody of this mini-est of maxi scooters is a 278-cc single cylinder that can only be described as torque-y. Yes, torque-y. For a midsize scooter that is. So, I had to test it out.
As with fast, torque isn’t a word that’s typically uttered in conjunction with automatic, continuously variable transmissions, but the Super's bored-out motor ramps up the power on takeoff, so it’s got some grunt. So much grunt, in fact, that I decided to perform a little stunt. No wheelies were involved. I just decided, while riding PCH last Sunday, to sidleup to the Ninja ZX-6R and Harley-Davidson Dyna that were idling at the red and see if the Super lived up to its name. Suffice to say, it did. I smoked both bikes off the line, then stayed in front of them till the next light.
Did I enjoy sprinting ahead of those significantly larger bikes at the intersection of Temescal Canyon and PCH? Why, yes. Yes, I did. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I had to
have more, so I wanted a repeat performance. So it was a juvie thing to do. These days, more than ever, I enjoy a cheap thrill, and the the Super was able to oblige.
While I’ve ridden many freeway miles on Vespa’s 150-cc and 250 cc scoots without incident and felt fairly comfortable doing it, I would argue that the GTS 300 is Vespa’s first freeway-capable machine. Vespa estimates the Super’s top speed is 80 mph. I took it up to 90, the going rate of free-flowing traffic these days, to see if it could keep pace and it did. Without wheezing. Its 12-inch wheels were spinning faster than a rogue lathe, but the 120 and 130-mm treads on the front and rear tires felt firmly planted on the ground.
My biggest issue in riding the Super so fast was the windshield, it doesn’t have one, so the wind at that speed was quite the bully. Aftermarket screens are available, but mine didn’t have one. Nor would I have wanted one because it mucks with "The Vespa Look" which is elegant in its profile, upright in its perfect stance and, in the case of the GTS 300, trimmed with sporty details such as the Ferrari red front suspension cover as well as two-tone shiny alloy rims.
Like all Vespas, the GTS Super demands good posture from its riders, who must sit up straight and tall. Its piping-trimmed saddle is relatively high altitude, measuring 31.1 inches from seat to pavement, so only leggy Italian model types can flatfoot it at a stop. At least the seat is contoured to help the vertically challenged. It narrows toward the front, so if riders scooch closer to the controls, their heels stand a much better chance of making firm contact with the asphalt.
Their feet will want to be there only temporarily anyway. Well mannered, even prim in appearance, the Super is anything but in its true countenance. Rev it up and roll on the throttle. The Vespa GTS 300 Super is more than ready for it. And that is a very excitingly welcome surprise.
