about me4

I am an undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati, School of Design, Architecture, Art, & Planning. Originally, I am from Toledo, OH where I developed a passion for community planning and downtown revitalization. My interests include: Sustainability, Healthy Urban Planning, Complete Streets, New Urbanism, Form Based Codes, Zoning Codes, Economic Development, & Historical Preservation. It is through my experiences that I manage to have a comprehensive understanding of urban planning principles. These experiences have also contributed to my goal as an urban planner which is to make a lasting and positivedi!erence for the communities in which I work.

The purpose of this portfolio is to provide actual work completed while in the Bachelors of Urban Planningprogram at the University of Cincinnati. Included in this portfolio are works from studios and previous cooperative education experiences that showcase my abilities as a planner.

The objective of this portfolio is to present multiple projects in chronological order to show the progression of abilities and to explain the process of how projects were composed.

Drawing from a Photograph Drawing - 2010 Students were asked to draw from a photograph of any corner in Cincinnati. The corner was drawn from photographs to the right. This is the corner of Wheeler & McMillan streets. The purpose of this project is to present an urban setting from the view of a photograph trasformed into a drawing. Students learned to understand the urban fabric and to pay attention to the minor details that most developers and planners miss.

Two-Point Perspective Drawing - 2010 The featured project was created by drawing from a photograph of the corner of Race & West 7th streets in Downtown Cincinnati. This drawing shows the ability to draw in two-point perspective.

Illustrative Site Plan Drawing & Color - 2010 The Illustrative Site Plan’s purpose is to show experience working with di!erent design materials such as: brick, concrete, grass, roo"ng, and landscape materials. The layout of the trees is designed in away to present the viewer with the artist’s knowledge of how to cluster foliage and the intricate process of shadowing.

Background: Devou Park In the Site Analyis, Site Planning studio students were asked to develop a plan for Devou Park, located in Covington, Kentucky. This site was chosen because of its !uctuating topography and challenges for development. Most of the park has slopes greater than 15% and is surrounded by a tree canopy. Students learned the di"culties associated with slope and how to preserve nature.

Concept Development Drawing & Color - 2010 The concept development phase serves as a way to incoporate precedents into the design based on the empirical analyses. The decision was made to develop the land nearest to Prisoner’s Lake in order to best capture the views of Cincinnati and because it is on a realitively !at terrain that does not harm the existing tree canopy.

Proposed Concept Drawing & Color- 2011 The proposed concept for Devou Park is equipt with 50 residential units, 15 mixed use buildings, a bike trail, and two public plaza spaces. It is designed based o" of the precendent of Bishop Bay. The precedent is located outside of Madison, WI with very similiar characteristics as Devou Park.

Proposed Concept Drawing & Color- 2011 The drawing at the left displays single-family detached housing situated in a new urbanist-like environment. Complete with porches, multiple curb cuts, and less than a .25 mile walk to a bike/walking trail. This community is very walkable because of the trails that wisp residents to major attractions right from their doorsteps. These attractions include a boardwalk at Prisoner’s Lake, the town center development, and a historic museum. The buildings were positioned in a way to receive maximum sunlight while capturing the Cincinnati Metropolitan Region’s best view of downtown.

Connectivity

Regional Context

Google SketchUp - 2012The Community Council of Pleasant Ridge contacted the UCSchool of Planning to come up with a master plan for their neighborhood which includes better transportation andbetter connectivity to other neighborhoods and attractions.

ArcMap & Illustrator - 2012This map shows where Pleasant Ridge is locatedon a regional scale. This community is tucked intothe heart of the metropolitan region with a short drive time and close proximity to the region’s busiest highways.

Google SketchUpMy group was given the task of connecting the four schools to one another and to the central business district in a safe and aesthetically pleasing manner. There were seven areas of focus based on the feedback that was received at community meetings and through S.W.O.T. analyses. Theproposed project sites include the creation of a new park, a new school, a pedestrain bridge, an adaptive reuse building, streetscape improvements, three new mixed use buildings, and a cultural trail that connects allof the neighborhoods to these developments and to the community center.

Woodford Road South-North SectionMaster PlanGoogle Earth, Google SketchUp, & IllustratorThe !nal master plan for the community is compiled into four phases spanning over 14 years. These phases unite the community and re-establish the urban fabric of the aged neighborhood. The master plan focuses on the community’s existing assests, including the brand new Pleasant Ridge Monessori and the community center. These two existing developments serve as catalysts forfuture developments. The plan also calls for the community to review their zoning codes because Pleasant Ridge is not zoned properly to meet the standardsresidents wish to have.
