Charlottesville is a city of diverse neighborhoods, each with their own character. Belmontis strikingly different from the tree-enclosed spaces of the downtown mall. Currently,Charlottesville’s pedestrian mall ends suddenly at 9th Avenue, with four lanes oftraffic and an intimidating expanse of asphalt. This project aims to connect downtownCharlottesville to Belmont while preserving the unique character of the train yard, arare moment of gritty industrial history. I proposed to celebrate the grittiness of theyards by converting the area under the new bridge to a skate park, making the areaunder the bridge a signifi cant part of Charlottesville’s spatial experience.

On either end, the pedestrian paths swell to become spaces to listen to concerts, watchthe trains, or take in the fantastic views in order to further connect the bridge to its surrounding neighborhoods and the surrounding neighborhoods to the bridge.

Fairmont Apartments

The Fairmont Apartments are a set of 6 identical apartments built in the 1970s. Currently, each individual building lacks total connection with the outside environment, as well as connection to its adjacent buildings within the complex. This project works to use light and heat studies in order to find ways to combat the harsh light on the south western side of the buildng, as well as the shade to the north.

In order to do this, the project experiments with different uses of light shading and balony usage on the exterior of the building to order to gain the best livability of the residents.

**I worked on all preliminary designs for this project, but was onthe EcoMOD UVA Team to help accomplish the final renderings.

scheme b: best possibleThis scheme works to use implement the louver system of the previous scheme, as well as implement a wrap around balcony for each of the units which allows the residents a closer con-nection to the environment, as well as continue air flow to their living spaces.
