F.Stop Lounge 01 project year: 2010design team: mark cabrinha’s fall 2010 studioprincipal seating designers: caitlin woods, claire langkamer, lisa snyderproject brief: f.stop was a collaborative design-build project intended to rethink, remodel & revitalize the AIAS headquarters & student lounge on campus. completely designed, fabricated & constructed by the studio, the design creates an intimate & multifunctional space to be used by students and club administrators alike. an encompasing canopy cloud envelopes the angular ceiling to create a softer interior. a progression of traffic & diverse needs govern the floor plan. as a student enters, they can take quick seats in the window boxes, or order a coffee and sit at the bar. if they wish to stay and repose, they move deeper into the space towards the low level seating in the back of the room. student work can be displayed on a large cork board, movable model stands & built in shelving. as a whole, f.stop embraces the archtitecture student community & fulfills their needs.

“slounge”in collaboration with claire langkamer & lisa snyder, design and development of lounge seating for the space. comfort experiments, materials research parametric modeling, scale prototypes, structure studies, development of cnc files & full scale construction including upholstering.

project year: 2011-12design team: caitlin woods, anna bultema, garrett boyce, kaitlyn wentz fitzgerald, kathryn hicksproject brief: Bishop’s Peak Elementary School has an Outdoor Classroom for environmental education made possible by Lowes Education and PG&E Bright Ideas grants & designed as a thesis project by some previous students. this year, five of us chose to pursue the addition of a chalkboard element to facilitate display space for teaching lessons in the outdoor classroom. design iterations focused on utilizing an artistic element integrated with the chalkboard to teach the students about the life cycle & aspects of a tree system. the final design is composed of a tree sculpture made from salvaged slices of local tree trunks which frame a suspended chalkboard surface. construction systems were explored before mounting & a full scale mock piece constructed with specified materials- aluminum extrusions mounted on 18” on center spacers in the wall of the portable classroom. final instalation included cutting, sanding, sealing, painting & mounting

youth outreach camp, redwood regional park, oakland, caEngaging Nature & Nurture 03 project year: 2011-12

project brief: my senior theis project focused on creating a place for youth outreach centered on personal growth through environmental education & social skill building. i have proposed an outdoor immersion experience located in Redwood Regional Park, near Oakland California which offers the unique opportunity of being able to provide access to both a large urban & suburban student population. the camp would serve the surrounding middle schools & focus on working with 10 to 14 year old adolescents for a 3 to 5 day stay. the camp is proposed as a system of sleeping, learning, group activity & dining facilities. the camp will provide the Parks District with the volunteers it needs to help accomplish conservation projects & maintenance of outdoor areas while students will be provided with a supportive environment to build social relationships & self esteem whilst reconnecting with a natural environment. at the same time, the schools would be able to enrich their science and social studies programs with hands on learning and environmental interaction.

Mercato Ortofrutticolo 04

project year: 2011design team: caitlin woods, bailey robertson & danielle lieuproject brief: this project was about bringing life to a former industrial site. Mercato Ortofrutticolo is situated on the edge of Florence, in close proximity to major urban infrastructure including the Autostrada, Firenze International Airport, & Firenze Rifredi train station. the site functions as both a gate to the city & an artery to the burgeouning residential Novoli area. so how does a new building become a part of the urban fabric? we proposed a design which promotes pedestrian traffic & offers new recreational spaces. the focus is about urban connectivity. the project will not only become a new urban center, but a main connectoion between existing & new developments. by responding to the surrounding context, an architectural landscape was conceived to accommodate program for a hotel, restaurants, central market space, culinary school, auditorium, conference center, shaded promenades, and outdoor communal spaces.

Palazzo Giovane 05

young adult activity & art center, florence, italyPalazzo Giovane 05 project year: 2011

project brief: steps away from the heart of florence, italy is palazzo giovane. the home of casa della creatività a community art and cultural center for the young adult population of the city. intended to be a place for international & native students to gather, interact & exhibit projects, the casa della creatività is a unique place in florence where youth, innovation & modernity become the focus. however the space is hidden within an alley sandwhiched between a small church & office space. the complex has little to no street presence, no visible signage for the community to recognize a public entry & lacks a unified program. the proposed design reimagines the existing interior courtyard by connecting it to the unused alleyway for extended gathering space while also creating an intriguing street presence & an ordered interior courtyard to unify existing program spaces & create a fluid path of circulation. with a modern twist in an old space, palazzo giovane thus becomes a lively student center for the city’s ever changing community.
