unit 6 unplugged

The Unit 6: Unplugged was a collaborative effort between archi-tecture students and engineering students to design a multifamily dwelling that fit the character of the Tidewater Virginia area and was affordable and sustainable.

The house is designed to blend seamlessly into an existing historic center-city neighborhood. A principal feature of the house is its porch - open air for three seasons, that is transformed via motor-ized windows into an elegant indoor sunspace. Over the porch, photovoltaic and thermal collector panels are integrated into the sloped roof. To the west of the house is the utility core, with a deck, pergola, and planters. The design drew inspiration from the tradi-tional arts and crafts style homes native to its neighborhood streets.

As a member of the team I collaborated on the design, and was lead for the communications team that developed the promotional and marketing materials.

The spatial organization was designed to yield the most efficient passive design for thermal comfort and direct solar gain. First, the long dimension of the house runs on the east west axis. Alternately, the sunspace and living space are positioned on the south side of the house.

The interior spaces were organized to yield the most efficient active systems. The side of the house with the sloped roof contains the wet core, kitchen, bath, washer, sinks, and the water-cooled photovoltaic/thermal (PVT) collectors. All these service oriented utilities and spaces are contained in one portion of the house.

houston’s rice design alliance (rda) hosted an 8 hour design charrette which challenged participants to envision how rice village (a sixteen block area of residential and shopping areas near rice university’s campus) could evolve in the future and tackle issues of identity, walkability, and circulation. as a team of one, i came up with the following proposal:

identity: business improvement district (bid)

rice village needs a cohesive governing body devoted to economic and community vitality. rice village business owners and residents could work to establish a business improvement district (bid). in a bid business owners and residents collectively work on changes that will improve and maintain rice village and establish a common aesthetic. bids provide these services to businesses and streets within their boundaries for a small fee:

-improve and maintain facades- provide street furniture, trees , signage, and lighting-maintain and improve (widen and smooth) sidewalks and streets-bury utility lines-provide security-establish employee parking programs in garages-establish a parking metered zone

parking metered zone (pmz)

a current problem within the village is that parking spaces are overcrowded and undervalued, which leads to fewer vacant spots, consumers cruising for free parking, and less available retail or social space.

rice village bid would establish a parking metered zone (pmz) that eliminates parking lots in favor of metered curbside parking, multi level parking garages to absorb excess cars, and the existing rooftop parking.

funds collected from new curbside parking meters on every street in the pmz would be earmarked for the physical improvements to be made and maintained within rice village..

a. view from back porch of a shared unit in the village

there is a paradox between building and migrancy, as one is associated with permanence and stability while the other rests at the opposite poles of fluidity and flux. this project sought to reconcile the necessity of visibility for itinerant women and specifically migrating mother’s with the needs for security, efficiency and good design. the solution was to create communal units that focused on shared space, flexibility, and efficiency within each home. below are some design requirements set for this project.

each unit must be minimal each unit must be adjustable for each woman’s needs

each unit must facilitate community

due to the dire lack of economic resources in some parts of mexico, women head to the eastern shore of maryland to earn money to support their families. however, the exploitation and hardships they face while working in maryland’s booming crabbing industry forces some to return home.

connecting communities

project overview

the queensway project was a collaborative project to revitalize an abandoned railway that extended from the disparate neighborhoods of south ozone park to rego park in queens, new york. the individual portion of the project was from the ozone park to richmond hill segment of the bridge and focused on adding bicycle access, and incentives for cyclists as well as fitness

fitness trailthe fitness trails provided space for a variety of activities from yoga torecreational walking. Programmed space included fitness equipment as well.

one of the purposes of the queensway is to connect people to each other and to healthy activities such as biking , running, ,jogging and various other activities that promote physical activity regardless of age. for this reason we are including two main projects to promote physicla activity
