Creative Writing

• He ripped the bag off my head, almost taking my head with it. My surroundings flooded my vision. It was dark. I glanced over to the sound of the wretched being, and the only thing of notice was a heap of rags next to some chains. A beast of a man towered in front of me blocking the one source of illumination in this.. for lack of better terms: underground prison. There were pipes protruding from the walls and a wretched substance dripped from the ceiling onto me. I was hoping the smell of the room didn’t correlate with the liquid. Die? I was already dead. Or so it seemed. But I couldn’t stay here a second more, I started to shake with fear. “I.. I’ll join”, I stammered, barely a whisper. He took one glance at me, then the heap of rags, and stormed out of the room; appearing dissatisfied slamming the door with him. And just as soon as he had left, the light flickered and went.

• The American dream. It means many different things, depending on who you ask. Some people believe it’s a two story house with a white picket fence and a family. Others think it’s becoming the CEO of the a corporate business. Wealth, love, prosperity, and happiness-- you name it.

Analytical Writing

• “One argument is that the government should worry about the future and not the past; slavery was in the past, and it’s time to move on. They also argue about how many African-Americans were given free passage into the United States of America with skills. And that the mistakes were made, were by our ancestors, and their mistakes are not ours.

• How can people repair the damage brought about or suffered by their ancestors? Reparations for the atrocities committed to slaves, in my mind, will take much longer to heal than currently possible, and the best thing to do is remember that these are things done in the past, and we hold no responsibility for this, except to remember it and move on.

• Rhetoric plays a big part in creative writing and can even set the tone and style of the piece of writing.

Reading3.’For who is there so cold, that a nation's sympathy could not warm him? Who so obdurate and dead to the claims of gratitude, that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? Who so stolid and selfish, that would not give his voice to swell the hallelujahs of a nation's jubilee, when the chains of servitude had been torn from his limbs? I am not that man. In a case like that, the dumb might eloquently speak, and the "lame man leap as an hart."’ (Pg1)

"Frederic Douglass." Fourth of July. N.p., n.d. Web. <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4h2927t.html>.

In this excerpt, he utilizes his vast vocabulary and extensive rhetoric abilities to help persuade the reader, and further communicate his point. He uses redundancy for example in:

“For who is there so cold, that a nation's sympathy could not warm him? Who so obdurate and dead to the claims of gratitude, that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? Who so stolid and selfish,” He uses this and pathos to grab the emotions of the reader.
