Scenario ParkingAll of the parking possibilities of the centre of Utrecht willbe places in this area. Area, mobility, parking and livingwill be work together as partners.
Scenario AutarkieIn this scenario the small community or thehistorical immunity will be the model for this area.Peaceful and small living combined with the bigJaarbeurs.
Scenario Total IntegrationThis scenario will develop not from theinside (site itself) but from the outside.First we will develop the borders, upgradeit and eventually develop the Jaarbeurs-terrein.
Scenario SuperblockIn this scenario we investigate the possibilities of the maxof living, public space and mass within one area.
Scenario I love fairtradeCommercial is here the key. The key ofdeveloping the area, the key of gaining moneyand eventually the key to degentrificate the area.Back to the social possibilities of
commercial thinking.
Scenario Central ParkPark as an gap within the urban tissue. With thisscenario we investigate the possibilities of an urbanpark for Utrecht.

This project for Studio Border Conditions is fo-cused on the area of New York. The research
started with a fascination you want to researchabout. Mine was the underground scene inNew York. But instead of taking the contex of
the underground scene in the art scene or mu-sic scene I took this literally by goingunderground, to the New York Subwaystations.
In these areas happens streetperformancesdone by artists who are expressing their art to
the public. Art expressions like dance, music orjust entertainment performances. Theseperformances are based on temporary time, unexpected and suprise and done on locations
which are not really made to perform. But justbecause of these elements of suprise of theseperformances they are creating a
transformation of space they are happening.
My research is focussing on the architectural
and sociological elements of these perfor-mances mainly what this transformation is andthe effect on the area and on the people. For this project this research will be done by
making mappings to be nally the base and
inspiration for the development of a building.

After analyzing differentperformances I decided tostudy one performance in de-
tail. So I decided to study theperformance of a guitar playerwith a violin player.
I have been looking at thetrajectories of the audienceduring the performance andhow they went and added the
factor time. By inserting thisfactor the route/trajectory ofthe audience became a path
based on time where increas-
ing and decreasing of speedwas present. This increasingand decreasing of speed do I
notate as rhythm.

The rhythm of this performance I got by making an mapping (analyze) of the audiencesbehavior during this performance.
I notated their location, their trajectories and dierences between where they started andwhere they end, all during a certain period of 46 frames of 0.5 seconds. With this informationI made a diagram of this information which ended up in a structure of rhythms during time.
This structure naly showed the basic structure for the design. This structure is notated asrhythm in time (transitions, increasing of speed, decreasing of speed) The structure which Ifinally got is a structure of peoples behavior disturbed by the performance and a structure ofpeoples behavior without anydisturbing by the performance.
After doing this I finally got a structure which shows the transformation of the space bythe performance. Which I used for the design of the building. For developing the reasearch
procudure towards had I chosen to use the structure for a function which expressed theriged structure of traveling and a function which contains the elements being the opposit ofit.I ended up in the function of a ferryterminal which contains spaces for art.

DIAGRAM OF RHYTHMS of the per formanceThe next step to continue with the diagrams I deformed the structure of the normal sequential develop-ment of a transition by the improvisation. The deformation is done on a grid system of the frames versus
distance towards the performance. This grid represents this sequential development of the performance. With this deformation or deconstruction of the sequential development I gained three parameters. These parameters are three rhythms which are coming out of the interaction (the transformation of the
space during the performance). For the final step I took these three rhythms and merged them into one diagram which shows an abstractinterpretation of the transformation by the performance. I called this interpretation the diagram of rhythmsof the performance.
parameter #1:Rhythm of connectivity
parameter #2:Rhythm of the character of the transition
Parameter #3:Rhythm of the impact on the transition

The location for the building will be situated at
the riverside of Long Island, Hunterspoint.
The area of Hunterspoint is nowadays adeserted and desolated area where almost no
development is. The area used to be a high
industrial area where small but high industrialfactories where operating. During time the
area became more abandoned and need nowaeconomical injection of new investments togrow and develop.
The mapping for the project is based on transition-
al flows gained from the research about thetransitional versus improvised. To cope with this Iwill make a ferry terminal. The building will contain
these transitional flows and is able to connect withthe areas condition.
The areas condition contains five interesting placesto connect with the terminal and Manhattan. One place is the trainstation (1) which is endingin this area. The other is the leisure area of sport
facilities with park (2). The third interesting placeis upcoming economic centre (3). The fourth place
is the Long Island highway (4) which is going hereunder the river. And the last place is huge desertedspace of nothing but sand, grass and mud (5).
These five places will be connected by the terminal
with Manhattan to have a good intensiveconnection. A connection which can attractinvestments, visitors and tourists to this area.

The development from the structure towards the nal design of the terminal wasbased on certain steps. I made a diagram of the dierent rhythms of the structureand made him 3d. I implemented functions and tried to create a landscape /cityscape which provide the possibilities to use the terminal as it should be, (rigid /
fast / no identity) by giving opportunities to improvise with art exhibitions (improvi-sition / delayed / identity based) on the terminal structure.
The building is made of concrete which made the smoothness for the terminaldisturbed by the exhibitionspaces.

Indesem 2007 was focused on the issue ofthe future. Mainly on what architects fromnowadays will leave behind for the next
generation.
To give answer to this question several
students from all over the world wereinvited to embody this question and try togive an aswer. The results of this question would be pre-
sented on a collection of billboards duringthe First International Bienale of Rotterdam.
The assignment was divided in severallocations in Rotterdam. We had to make animage/ view for this location how this viewwould be over sixty years on that specific
location. The group with the best visionwould be published on the billboards.
Our group won finally two locations basedon the vision how we can deal withreligion and the rise of the level of the riverMaas.
