ROOFSCAPE SPACE

Instructor: Georg Rafailidis

Fall 2010Material Culture Research Group Studio -1

A free multi-lever space is created by one single modu-lated roof architecture. The interior space with flat floor and variable ceiling and exte-rior space with variable floor and flat ceiling are located in different floors alternately. A hybrid program of a store chain and a local market is housed inside and outside separately.

Spring 2011Material Culture Research Group Studio -2Generous Architecture: The Exquisite Corpse

In the studio,we investigated and used time-based process of design, the Exqui-site Corpse, toward the creation of gener-ous architectures. the generous quality of architecture I fo-cused on was the seasonal variability of space. The space offered distinct spatial experiences according to natural factors, including air-flowing, daylight, tempera-ture, etc. I learnt this quality from my precedent- Open Air School, developed it in the studio process, and brought it back to the original bulding with new programming.

Summer Section

Summer View

In summer, space extends into the outdoor space. Tents, trees, showers, lamps, heating devices, and people will occupy the whole courtyard. Tents are arranged around heating de-vices and shower spots. Gather-ing space will be set under trees and lamps. the whole courtyard looks like a village cover by forest.

Winter View

When winter comes, there are fewer travelers. Tents are gone. Lamps and heating devices keep working there. All pro-grams are enclosed indoor. The outdoor space is open to the

public, as a thermal controlled

park. Lamps and heating devic-es keep working there. Snow is melted by heating lamps. People will gather around them, chart-ing, playing snow ball, walking dogs, and so on.

Sky-light

The school space is created by oblique surfaces, including walls, some floors, to promote the communication. The organi-zation of the rooms also follows the rhythm of the houses and environment around. Eight units are connected with declining circulation. The shape and loca-tions of the opening are relative to the view of the environment.

ART COMMUNITY

Comprehensive StudioSpring 2010

Instructor: Annette Lecuyer

The art community complex project comes up with six towers enclosed in a big penetrated box. The space inside the tower is used as live + work units. Out-side the towers is the public and shared space. There are several gardencourts and a large atrium to make all function spaces into a whole.

The site was originally an abandoned factory with mostly traditional wood and stone structure one-story buildings. The design principle is developing contract in between old and new, raw and fine, new cultrual elements and histroy/background of the site.
