This building results from the aggregation of five

emergency housing prototypes, each one with 30

square meters, that were planned to have the neces-

sary living conditions for a small family.

This constitutes three floors of housing with an

open vertical access, inspired by the existing stair-

cases in the site. This vertical access is located on

the north side of the building and could be extended

furthermore with future aggregations of more proto-

types.

The project divides the lot diagonally, trying to

preserve the existing trees and developing a rela-

tionship with the territory based in the garden de-

sign and using the local buildings as a reference.

The building’s design was inspired by existing build-

ings and their forms. The project is formed by volumes

that create jagged fronts, like the rear of the buildings in

the area.

The concept of the building is based on having only

two galleries to serve four floors, with duplex typolo-

gies. Each floor consists of the repetition of the same

typology, with two vertical access on the end of the gal-

leries. Inside the apartments, the logic applied was to

use the living room as the center and distribution, leav-

ing the kitchen, toilets and bedrooms distributed around

it, allowing all to have natural lighting.

The orientation of the building (E/W) eliminates the

problems of the facades facing north, and ensures a bet-

ter separation of functions in each apartment, which

allows better control of the spatial organization. 3D– Living Room

The proposal is based on transforming a high-

traffic street in a avenue lined with trees that would

revive the local circulation and create parking and

reestablish the connection with the sea, by moving

the train to the south and elevating it.

In the western area, the idea of a green corridor

was applied, creating an area of low residential

density and privileged access to a new beach/

oceanic pool and access to a nearby railway station.

In the center of the proposal is set an urban de-

velopment surrounding the marina, always framed

by plazas and gardens in contact with the water.

Finally, on the eastern side of the proposal there is

a dock to support sailing and a sport equipment.

The Cultural and Congress Centre is a multi-use

equipment located at the Central Square of the plan

developed for the riverside area. This equipment

will be divided in two buildings: a library + confer-

ence rooms and an auditorium + gallery for exhibi-

tions.

The idea of public space has always been pre-

sent in the urban plan developed for this area and

therefore the cultural center will consist of two

buildings of different character, but complementary,

which delimit an open square to the sea. These two

buildings bordering the square function as one be-

cause they will be interconnected. The square that

lies between them will work as part of this cultural

center, dedicated to outdoor events.

The project area is an offices’ area where people

come to work, where major roads and transportation

converge. These characteristics are a factor of develop-

ment of a new centrality in the urban void left space in

Entrecampos.

The concept was based on bringing the existing di-

rection of the buildings into the proposal, using the ur-

ban void to make sense of the surrounding buildings.

Thus, the directions perpendicular to the Avenues were

interconnected and the direction of Campo Grande was

brought into the proposal.

The housing was set along the “República” Avenue,

the collective equipment (Ministry of Economy) along “5

de Outubro” Avenue and the office buildings in the core

of the proposal. A tower was also created to help fram-

ing the beginning of the proposal. Another aim of this

project is to connect the green structure within the circu-

lation of the proposal. Model

The proposal is inspired on a set of sen-

sations when one crosses it, based on smell,

sight and sound. In terms of the smell there

is a gradation of green, from flowers to

trees.

The trees located on “República” Avenue

would be elms, while at “5 de Outubro” Ave-

nue, would be jacarandas. In the inner part

of the proposal, there would be cherry trees

on the main route, while in the surrounding

lemon trees and plum trees.

The journey through the public space is

guided by water, depending on how it falls,

slips or jumps from the ground making dif-

ferent sounds as we approach the railway

station. In visual terms, the materiality is

based on limestone and “Azulino de Cascais”

stone.
