PresentationPresentation

Having lived in 7 countries, I have always noted that physical environments affect the character of a person to a great deal. I am attracted to architectural design because it possesses the possibility to brighten up the lives of many. Hu-mans are constantly surrounded by architecture, and to be able to partake in the creation of an every-day environment gives me a high motivation.

In architectural design, I consider fulfi lling the needs of the client essential. It is also important to make full use of the characteristic of the site- for example, the vegetation, the ground levels, its orientation toward the sun, the surrounding structures and infrastructure, the culture and habits of the people who inhabit the area, the climate and the material suited for it. However basic functions and conditions are not the only ingredients for architectural design.

I am interested in architectural design that considers what the user would see and feel in every moment and every spot he is when inside or near the architecture. I am also conscious of how the passers-by would feel, having the architecture take part in their environment. A good design does not come solely from logic, so an architect must strive to choose the best form, material, and detail from all the possibilities by testing and simulating with images and models. An imagina-tion of how the scenery would evolve, as one walks around the architecture, as a day passes, as the seasons change, and as decades pass, plays a vital role in the decisions of architectural design.

A sincerity of this sort is the principle of good architectural design.

Savouring antiquity

Caravaggio in Raffaello’s Workshop

Exhibition space

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was infl uenced by the chiaroscuro effects of Raffaello, who started his career in this workshop of Giovanni Santi. I chose to exhibit three of his paintings of which the directions of light correspond to the openings of the windows of the assigned space.

The works of Caravaggio are usually seen in museums and churches. In a museum, people who are standing have priority over those sitting. In churches the paintings are found in cha-pels where they are placed in angles that are diffi cult to see.

This small space is utilized to bring the visitor closer to the works of art. I would like to create many viewing angles. The visitor drinks wine while he looking at the photo, because I as-sociate the image of Caravaggio strongly with red wine.

The pavement will be covered with tatami units. A tatami has the softness to walk and to sit on, and spilt wine will not be absorbed immediately. Far from the city, amidst the woods, one longs for a space for contemplation

Program: A house where a young couple who own an IT company in Tokyo can work, relax, and invite guests to stay. Site: A plot of land in Karuizawa, a wooded area renowned as a summer and winter retreat, 150km from Tokyo.

Acknowledging the signifi cance of the trees which characterise the site, the house is situated in a way that no trees are cut.

The living dining kitchen and the library are visually connected, thus the sense of space is shared.

The workplace and the library faces the red pine forest in the north. The refl ecting pool accentuates the serenity of the forest.

Creating a favorite on-campus space for every student

Program: A space where students can stay in their free time. Site: Tokyo. A site that connects two areas of our university campus and two stations.

At the entrance there is a café. The student buys a cup of coffee or borrows a book of his choice, and goes off to his favorite spot.Two side wings are each dedicated to the viewing of the two main groups of trees, one in the south west and one in the center of the site.Terraces allow for casual access to the outside.

The site is surrounded by trains passing on two levels of height, public pedestrian path, research buildings, road lined with magnifi cent Gingko trees.Various types of trees grow in the site itself. The site thereby has distinct characteristics in various heights.This project was designed so that from diverse locations, angles, and heights, the view of each of these aspects that make the site so dynamic can be appreciated to its fullest.

The northern side faces the magnifi cent row of Gingko trees.The fl oor of the fi rst fl oor is raised to 1800mm so that one can enjoy the view of the leaves instead of bare trunks.

Slopes and curved streets create the dynamic landscape of Daikanyama.A cinema complex in which one can savour the characteristic of this area.

Arriving from the station, one is led through the site to various directions in the city. Thus this project exists as a gateway to Daikanyama.

Streets approach the site at the 4 corners. The different levels at the corners are ex-tended to the center of the site, creating a dramatic can-yon-like atrium.

Cinemas are placed on the three different ground levels where they can be seen from the atrium. In this manner the site’s elevation differences are emphasized.

Viborg Rådhus

The aim of the project is to create a town hall which realizes the idea of democracy. It is positioned so that citizens can enjoy the maximum amount of the land as a public park. The town hall is a combination of two volumes. The fi rst volume has its focus on the encounter between citizens and the mu-nicipal staff, and houses a spacious atrium which creates a welcoming atmo-sphere. The other volume houses the administration offi ces. The open plan of this part of the complex makes possible a fl uid communication among the various administrative sections. This volume surrounds a tranquil green couryard which contributes to a pleasant work environment.

The project site is a part of the har-bor of Århus which the comune plans to develop in the coming years. The north and west side of the site face the sea. On the west side many marine sports activi-ties are present. Urban structures will be developed in the east side of the site and a large promenade arrives to this side from the center of the city.

In the project, on the west bank of the sea, a sports high school will be situated. Next to it there will be a large plaza where outdoor pub-lic events can take place. Build-ings will be placed in the western part of the site close to the urban part of the harbor. The complex consists of two volumes. Between the two a passage connects the marine activity area to the urban area.

The ground fl oor of the complex has functions that are open to the public, such as shops, restaurants, conference hall, and sports recre-ation center.

On the fl oors above, the volume to the north facing the sea houses a hotel for athletes and guests who come for business or recreation. O th fl b th l t th th f i th h In the other volume, the fl oors above are comprised of offi ces and a

kindergarten. The rooftop is used as a playground. Both volumes rise in height as it draws back from the sea, and gives a sense of connection between the sea and the urban setting.
