I AMAn architecture student becoming an Architect.

A person that is always wandering.

I LIKEI like the simple things in life. Finding beauty in

the ordinary. I like Seeing phenomena and let myself being carried

away by them. Daydreaming.I like reflection creating two worlds on a surface

I like the wear of usage giving a building or object a story, a life. The traces of time.

I like people appropriating their own space, interpreting a space in their own way.

I like the influence of light on form/function/ mood /feeling/ atmosphere...I like finding fragility.

I like seeing architecture as a second skin.I like layers and layering.

I like spaces that take you on a journey into memory and imagination, architecture going beyond the building.

I like the ephemera, the fleetingI like playing with textures

I like the combination of old and newI like interior design, furniture, impressionism, paintings,

...art.

I WANTTo get a even more clear vision of what kind of architect

I will or can be.To translate my being, thoughts and fascinations into

designs. To work as a team, learn from others.

To find a unique opportunity to share my architectural skills and interest.

The blindspot: find an aspect that fascinates you to work with.

Research around the phenomena of reflection, photographically, mathematically, intuitive, explora-

tive. Getting to know glass, how does it act and react.

“ Glass can be transparent but it can also be a wall”

“ Layering the glass, controlling transparency”

Finding the principals of reflection, angels, different kinds of reflection, action reaction.

Thesis : A layer of light Cambridge university library

landscape CompetionYear: 2014

Reinventing the surroundings of the Cambridge university library incorporating my own intrests.

My proposal 3 layers of design:1 Surroundings: small but significant changes

2 Extra light layer to the library, an extension, giving the students a place to work in daylight.

3 Light plan: change the light, change the atmosphere.

The building is a work about light, artificial and natural, transparency, translucency, materialised vs narrative, crucial things in this process

are details, image and the evaluation of finding my place in architec-ture.

Trying to capture the merging of two worlds, the contrast between transparency and reflection, creating a wall. Night versus day and searching for the thin line between an image of a concept and the

reality of structure and transcriptions.

Changes to the surrounding can be small but significant.

Extra green and solving lost spaces , a container space: clearing the view.

Opening the parking behind library to pub-lic, removing cars in front of the library,

creating a square.Relocating the circulation and walking un-derneath the trees to the entrance, chang-

ing the point of view. Outside ramp, auditorium, benches, to

work, eat, relax, study, teach..Covered outside space underneath new

structure.

A better and well thought of lighting makes the surrounding safer and pleas-ant. Different ways of lighting are used.

Creating a rhythm of light spots an-nouncing the entrance.

Using trees as lighting element, with spots facing towards facade, creating

shades .Linear lighting is used to accentuate a

path or to show direction.Slope , structure and container spaces

integrated in light plan.

Complementing the libraryThe program is a space that completes the library in such a way that it offers a place to study , read or work in small groups, poured over with light.

The open space is divided in two parts by sound, creating two different atmospheres. One part will be for studying and reading in silence. This part contains bookshelves, with the latest informative magazines, who, together with the column struc-

ture create a playful circulation and lovely shades. Tables and chairs will be placed inside and can be moved around as pleased, like in Les Tuiller-

ies in Paris. The stairs element carries the border of the two atmospheres. The stairs used to study and read on,on one side. And those used to con-versate, discuss and maybe even present on the other. The stairs will have incisions, which make it

possible to take different kinds of positions.

Changes for the competition: Addition to the library, depending on the creativity and generosity of people.

The outdoor bookcases could be used as a kind of writing forum for people from all over the world. Creating an opportunity for

young writers and students to show of their work. Or just people leaving their old books there to be read. I see it quite romanti-

cally but I really think this could work. Imagine going there find-ing books with notes of the previous owners or books that have never been published. Because there are people from all over the world visiting Cambridge and the university library, it’s the

perfect place to start a project like this.

It could be a library breaking all the rules of security, depending on the creativity and generosity of the people, in contrast to the university library. Or maybe not in contrast but as a kind of addi-

tion to the old library.

Off course the structure can be used as a study place. When tables and chairs are put down in summer, it will be the perfect place to study outside. It also could be used for receptions or an

outside art gallery.
