ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTS

ABOUT TEAM WORK: In National Technical University of Athens, where I studied in the School of Architecture, almost every architectural project is carried out as team work. There has been a try in this portfolio to focus on material created solely by me, but in other cases my par-ticipation and contribution to every project is clearly ex-plained, with respect to my coworkers and professors.

The works selected, are placed in chronological order.

LIBRARY - CULTURE CENTER IN NEA PHILADELPHIA

DESCRIPTION: Nea Philadelphia is an area in Athens constructed in the fi rst half of the twentieth century. It was inhabited mostly by immigrants after 1922’s immigration movement. The project was a Library with spaces used as a center for immigrants, having greek language courses and cul-tural events. The preservation of the individual structure style of the

area was considered very important. The building is divided to two concrete masses connected with a metal construction that includes the entrance, the elevator and the stairs. The fi rst of the concrete mass-es has several classrooms and an administration offi ce and the short-er one includes the Library and a loft that is used as a reading room.

DESCRIPTION: The subject of the course was to design a museum with one permanent exhibi-tion about the history of the city and a space for various exhibitions and events. The site of the construction was a space on Klafthmonos square, currently used as a parking area. Under the ground, lie the remains of the ancient city wall. The building is divided to two concrete masses connected with a steel construction. The entrance to the building is in the biggest of the two concrete masses. This

building also contains a cafeteria, a restaurant, a library, a shop and the foy-er to an underground auditorium. The metal construction connecting the two concrete masses contains the exhibitions and an area on the rooftop, used by the restaurant and the cafeteria. Under this construction there is a public area where the ancient city wall is partially uncovered. The second, smaller con-crete building contains toilets, storage rooms for the exhibitions and fi re escape.

2013RECONSTRUCTION OF KLAFTHMONOS SQUARE IN THE CENTER OF ATHENS

CURRENT SITUATION: Klafthmonos square is located in the center of Athens by Stadiou street. This location is the border of the old city to the south and the new city to the north. The buildings of the north part are mostly constructed in 18th century and are considered important sam-ples of the period of neoclassicism. The older part of the city in the

south is mostly defi ned by it’s individual eastern character, smaller streets full of life and international people, in contrast with the big avenues of the north side. Under the ground lie the remains of the ancient wall. The axis of the wall is expressed in the modern city as the division between north and south area along Stadiou street.

2013RESIDENTIAL AREA IN THE BORDER OF THE FOREST OF OSLO

DESCRIPTION: This project was a study of the border between the growing city of Oslo and the forest that sur-rounds it. The design was inspired by the form of an ant nest. The erosion of the forest around the city was expressed by the outline curve,

that creates receptacles of human life, caus-ing the sense of containment. Each building of the synthesis, is divided in two parts, one of them being used as a home and the other in-tended for a working space for the inhabitants.

COMPUTATIONAL SCULPTING PROJECT IN NTUA

Participation in team:

The course

Synthesis of Sculpture, Parametric design of functional model, construction of model machine, and Presentation at SGT foundation(Onassis cultural center)

NTUA School Project, 9th Semester

Assistant Professor: D. Papalexopoulos

Group Work (2 team members): Thanos Zervos, Maria Revisiou

This project was part of the Course of Architectural Technology of the 9th Semester at National Technical University of Athens. The goal of the course was to introduce students to computational design software. The students were divided to small teams (2 to 5 students per project) and designed interactive sculptures with no practical use as machines, inspired by the work of Jean Tinguely. After the synthesis of the sculp-ture, the teams worked with Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, to learn how to create a model of their idea. Final task, was to create a working in-teractive model of the synthesis, by programing an Arduino circuit, that consisted the core of the sculpture.

18

The link below presents a collection of projects from the course, including this one, explaining the main idea of the subject:

https://metamechpostdigital.wordpress.com/

Page 19: PORTFOLIO OF THANOS ZERVOS

The idea

Programing the Arduino Circuit

The distance between the machine and the person approaching it, is calculated by an infrared distance censor. Part of the assignment was to strictly keep the project in low budget, using simple materi-als and equipment.

For the programing of the circuit, two different approaches were taught. The fi rst was to transfer the information from Grasshopper to the Arduino circuit, using the Firefl y plug-in, and the other one was to program directly the circuit.Students experimented with both procedures. This specifi c project was fi nally worked with the latter.

The mechanical set up, was inspired by an airplane rotary engine. The structure of the engine was in this case inverted, as the power in this mechanism is trans-fered from the rotating axis to the pistons, which bend the soft surface. The axis is powered by a small electric motor, controlled by the Arduino circuit, that also controls the led bulbs that light up the mechanism.

The main idea of the sculpture was to create a machine that would bend a soft surface. As a person comes closer to the ma-chine, the speed increases and the mechanism lights up, making the surface transparent.

BENCH AND BICYCLE STOP INSTALLATION IN ERMOU STREET IN ATHENS 2011(NTUA)

DESCRIPTION: This design is an installation project in Ermou Street, and it was part of a 6th Semester course of NTUA. The course’s subject was to design furniture of public use. The idea of the proj-ect was to create a sitting bench that would

be also used as a bicycle stop. The area in-cludes a series of ancient relics and a pedestri-an street that crossed the archaeological area. The structure of the benches is refl ecting the idea of decomposition of the ancient relics.

INVESTIGATION OF THE FORM OF A WOODEN BOAT AS AN ARCHITECTONIC ELEMENT 2015(NTUA)

DESCRIPTION: This material does not constitute a project by itself, but it’s part of the research of my thesis in NTUA. The subject of the thesis is a reconstruc-tion of a wood shipyard in Syros Island and the addition of a school and a museum. The ma-

terial above is trying to investigate the relation of the form of the boats being build, with the buildings around, as long as the possible use of those shapes in the design.

3. Those screenshots are from a running project at SpaceUnder Studio. The subject of this project is that the user is walking in a space where basic geometric solids represent buildings. Approaching one solid, it transforms to the building to be presented, and the scene changes to one that includes the building materials and lighting in a real time rendering environment. The project is intended to be used as an electronic portfolio. Unity engine has been used for the development and scripting has been in C#. The project is about to fi nish within February 2016.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF BUILDINGS IN MANI 2011

This material is part of the project for the course “Systematic analysis of vernacular buildings and settlements”. The site of the survey was the area Mani in Greece countryside. The buildings of this area have interesting structural elements as most of them are fortress like construction to shelter the people of pirate attacks in the period between 16th and 19th century.

RENOVATION OF GARAGE TO WORKSHOP IN NEA SMIRNI (HANDCRAFTED INDIVIDUAL PROJECT) 2014

The interior of this workshop was designed and hand build by me in 2014, and since then it is used as a personal working space.

The floor is made of concrete casted into a grid of plywood planks. The procedure of constructing the floor is seen in the pictures on the left. After the concrete is casted in the grid, it is sanded until the plywood is revealed.

The working table is made out of plywood that lies on a steel construction.

The rest of the furniture is also constructed of plywood which is the dominant material in this space.

The walls of the toilet are a combination of layers of plywood and bricks, held together by steel bars and cement based tile adhesive.
