WHAT IS SOLVENT EXTRACTION (SX)?
Recovery of a valuable metal
Use of immiscible Organic and Aqueous solutions
Range of distribution of the valuable metal between the two allows for a certain degree of separation.

Process in Africa.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
![Page 15: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The primary driving force behind a thickener design is
the correct settling rate of the solid particulates.
The settling rate is affected by
- Nature of the particle
- Particle size and density
- Degree of flocculation and type of
flocculant
- Method of flocculation addition
- Method and accuracy of dilution of the
feed stream
- Inconsistent feed both in terms of
quantity and concentration
- Changes to the plant conditions such as
unplanned stoppages- Mechanical
strength
THICKENERS

• Two flocculant dosage points
• Centrifugal flow in the feed well
• Bed height determination
• Adjustable launder overflow
• Adjustable deflection plate
• Froth remover
• Adjustable dilution system
• Angled deflection plate
• Accurate underflow measurement
![Page 17: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
COUNTER CURRENT DECANTATION
• VSD driven pumper mixer unit –ensuring optimal mixing time• Unique tank design ensures no material hold up• Variability in terms of head and flow• Reduced power requirement
• Adjustable dilution• Centrifugal Feed well• Minimised pump requirements
Unique designed feed system to each thickener:

DESIGN DEVELOPMENTS
![Page 21: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
ATTRITION SCRUBBERS
![Page 22: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
ATTRITION SCRUBBING
• Inter-particle collisions in order to change particle
surfaces.
• Used to clean, modify and remove surface coatings
and contaminates.
![Page 23: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
USES AND APPLICATIONS
• Removal of leached Silicates from HMS.
• Lime Slaking.
• Breakdown of Kimberlitic Clays and Diamond
coatings.
• Removal of oxide surfaces from flotation feed –
significant improvement in Coal and Platinum
recovery.
• Platinum – surface removal of swiped gangue
components or ideal conditioning?
![Page 24: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
PACIFIC MP ELIMINATES SCALE UP
ISSUES.
• Lab scale tests – Typically 1.5 Litre Denver D12 with
lab attritioning impeller.
•Distance between impeller – 10 mm.
• Large scale machines (Conventional)
•Distance increases from 200 mm in 300 Litre
machine to over 500 mm in 20 cubic meter unit.
• Velocity degradation over distance.
• Pacific MP uses a constant 2.5 times largest particle
size for the distance between the impeller.
![Page 25: Portfolio Presentation 20090817](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062419/559c45c41a28ab8f218b4655/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

•De Beers – Test on breakdown of Kimberlitic clays with
ZERO Diamond breakage. – Multiple tests – Reduction in
10 micron material – 55% to 90% reducing feed to
downstream processes.
• Comparative tests of 3 different rotating assemblies on
HMS concentrates.
