REFLECTIONS

“What lies before us and what lies behind us are all small matters compared to what is within ,out into the world miracles happen”

Similarities:

The class room dynamics are apparently the same .In our Indian classrooms we see students who are intelligent, some mediocre and others prone to mischief, as I have observed here.

The curriculum is well planned in advanced.

The skill based approach appeared to be synonymous.

Stress among the teachers to complete the syllabus is the same in both the countries.

The students seem equally reluctant to appear for this continuous evaluation system which is present in our country too.

The teacher ultimately still resorts to the blackboard for explanations as in our country.

Differences:

Modern gadgets like LCD Projector is used frequently in the schools here as in India.

The morning warming up activity begins by reading the newspaper ,and is a part of the curriculum.

There is an English Movie shown to the students not only for language purposes but also for the acquisition of knowledge.

There are three different Counselors appointed by the school to observe the behavioral habits of the students , where as in India we have only one Counselor in each school. variety of Elective subjects like carpentry , robot making and aerospace are available in the schools here .eachers have individual work stations in their own class. In India teachers share one workstation with many other t eachers.

A gymnasium and an indoor basket ball court are some of the fortunate sports facilities which are not yet available in our country.

SHARED STRATEGIES &LESSON PLANS

(1)

2. When is this method or strategy useful?

This strategy is useful to assess student’s understanding of the studied text. It is useful when the teacher

wants the learner to reads the text carefully , analyse it and think deep about issues and form his/ her own

opinion about different aspects of the text.

3. Why or how is this method or strategy useful?

It is very useful to make the learner independent. This will enable the student to go beyond the textbook.

Just as Socrates, the great philosopher made people go to the core of the issue and analyse what they

actually meant by what they said, this method will be be useful to a student to think about what he says

and why he thinks so. It involves lot of prior preparation and interaction during the seminar which makes

classroom student centered.

4. What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method?

Students are given the instructions about the seminar and an evaluation rubric before hand.

Teacher explains the concept to them and students prepare questions on the text.

( Introductory question, 3 to5 core questions, closing question and any remark in the text is to be picked

out if it appeals to them)

At the scheduled time teacher makes students sit in a circular fashion and assigns the job of the

leader toa student who is supposed to be the moderator.

Each student reads the core question which is general and extrapolatory in nature.

One issue is picked out and discussed in detail. Students can relate the text to present

situations,i.e go beyond the text.

Then the core questions are raised and discussed. The student have to support their stand by

picking out quotes from the text. Thus it ensures thorough reading of the text.

The moderator controls the discussion and keeps check of the time.

Finally the closing question is discussed.

All students note down points and submit a written draft to the teacher.

They are evaluated for their prior work, effective participation and written submission.

5. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting?

In India the no. of students is more in the class room. However teacher can make groups and involve

students in such seminars to make them more thoughtful.

6. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy?

This is a new concept which I have learnt. I would like other teachers to know how a classroom can

become student centered with such an activity and how language teachers can focus on all skills by using

this novel strategy.

I will make sure that the teachers in country learn this concept and try out atleast with one group.

Action Research Proposal

RESEARCH; ANUPAMA CHADHA

SUBJECTS: DYSLEXIC STUDENTS

OF CLASSES1X-A B &C

Introduction

Statement of the Problem:

How can I help XI and XII grade English language learners who have dyslexia improve their reading skills?

Situation in class XI-C:

Explain the problem or situation in your classroom or school that your research will address. What led you to investigate this problem or situation?

CONTEXT

Dyslexia is a type of reading disability usually manifested as a difficulty with written language, particularly with reading and spelling.

Evidence suggests that it is a result of a difference in how the brain processes written and/or verbal language.

It is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as deficiencies in intelligence, non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction.

The word dyslexia comes from the Greek words δυς- dys- ("impaired") and λέξις lexis ("word"). People with dyslexia are called dyslexic or dyslectic.

THE SCHOOL: Rajhans vidyalaya , is nestled between the Gilbert hill and the modern township on the western suburb of Andheri ,Mumbai , in the western coast of Maharashtra.

My school Rajhans vidyalaya is the only CBSE School (C ENTRAL

BUREAU OF SECONDARY EDUCATION) in the suburb. This means that that it is directly linked with the centre, New Delhi for its norms and regulations, although it is a private school.

Rajhans vidyalaya believes that each child is inborn with individualistic skills and talents and thus caters to nurturing the child`s academic curiosity. The school has 1700 Students and the number of

teachers employed by the school are 60 .There are 40 students in each class. The fee structure being affordable and the excellent performance in National Exams and in the field of sports and co-curricular activities , our school has become popular.

Unlike most school programmes in India that focus on rote learning, schooling is done through projects, drawing, story-telling and role-play, especially in English as we follow a communicative approach.. The students are most outstanding and of great potential.

The students belong to a diversified background of castes and culture, they usually do not communicate in English at home but in their mother tongue.

THE STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY :The students belong to the high middle class income group. Majority of the parents are from the service class with both the parents working. Most of the parents have two siblings or sometimes only one.

The students belong to a multi-cultural background .Most of the parents are very supportive and encouraging ,but depend on outside tutoring .Since both the parents are working and the syllabus is also modern and modified over the years ,parents are unable to assist the students in their routine studies. This has two implications , sometimes the child learns independently ,on the other hand, the child is too dependent on the private tutor.

The students who were dyslexic, the parents were either unaware of this learning disability or even though they had earlier knowledge did not know what to do about it.

My observation after the initial test ie.reading and spelling test used to assess grade 9th was :The dyslexic students had very low self-esteem. They feared reading aloud in the class.

And dreaded spelling tests.

Most of the students do not use English language at home to express themselves, very few students read books but a majority of the students do like watching English films.

Statement of Research Purpose and Question: State the purpose of your proposed research. State your research question.

RESEARCH PURPOSE:

It pained me to see students shying away from reading.

Though dyslexic, these students had very high IQ`S and were very hard working.

As a teacher I have to try and inculcate in my students the love for reading that would help spelling errors and reading disability and instill a lot of self confidence in the dyslexic students.

After a simple writing test on spellings and reading, I would be able to evaluate the following observations:

If the students had confusion with before /after, right/left and so on.

Difficulty identifying or generating rhyming words, or counting syllables in words (phonological awareness).Difficulty with hearing and manipulating sounds in words (phonemic awareness)

Difficulty distinguishing different sounds in words (auditory discrimination)

Difficulty in learning the sounds of letters. Difficulty associating individual words with their correct meanings.

Confusion with combinations of words.

Sometimes due to fear of speaking incorrectly, some kids become withdrawn and shy or become a bully out of their inability to understand the social cues in their environment .

The above observations made me select this particular subject for my research.

QUESTION

How can I help XI and XII grade English language learners who have dyslexia improve their reading skills?

LITERATURE REVIEW

Describe how you will research and review published studies relating to your research topic. What strategies will you use to locate relevant literature? What databases and other resources will you search? What key words will guide your search? Give two examples of peer-reviewed, empirical studies that appear relevant to your topic and cite them at the end of your paper using proper APA style.

The strategy used would be to log onto Eric or Google ,advanced search or even study various journals in depth to see the explicit research already done on dyslexia.

Following are the two literary reviews /surveys conducted on dyslexia .

I could use the same tools and try to assess my students.

In the featured express dated for the week of August 19 thru August 25, 1998

Following results were concluded on dyslexic students:.

Yale researchers addressed the local conference , Dr.Sally Shaywitz presented results of findings on dyslexia to the audiences at the Bridges to learning conference in Sun Valley.

She explained the core deficit responsible for dyslexia is found within the language system in the brain. The English language contains 44 phonemes, which are the smallest units of sound. The conference was sponsored by the Lee David Pesky Center for Learning Enrichment, a

not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1996. Its services include psychoeducational assessments, individualized remediation plans, family and individual counseling, school consultations and classes for parents and teachers. The center is based in Boise

In 1896, W. Pringle Morgan, a British physician, from Seaford, East Sussex, England published a description of a reading-specific learning disorder in a report to the British Medical Journal titled "Congenital Word Blindness". This described the case of a boy named Percy who, at age 14, had not yet learned to read, yet showed normal intelligence and was generally adept at other activities typical of children of that age.

The above peer reviewed study would be very helpful in my research as it was conducted on a teenage boy, the age of my students is also the same.

The key words used will be: word recognition ,phonology ,reading research,

Reading skills ,reading difficulties, language processing, spellings, misconceptions, learning disability etc.

I will also take the help of the list of treatments of dyslexia and alternative therapy described in abstracts available at the GMU Library.

METHODS

Procedures: Describe the general procedures you will follow in collecting and analyzing or synthesizing data. Will your study be quantitative (numbers), qualitative (narrative), or mixed methods?

I will follow a mixed method study.

I will use LCD projectors and PPT`S to enhance visual comprehension.

CD and tape recorders for identifying sound.

Teach each sound phonetically .use tape recoders to record their reading so that they themselves can observe their progress.

And also teach them to divide the word to learn the spelling,eg :kingdom-king/dom,telephone-tele/pnone.

My next step would be:

. A meta-analysis evaluation to see the effects of phonological awareness instruction will show that the reading skills of all children will improve with systematic phonic

instruction. A method that encourages a word to be recognized through the building of its constituent sounds.

Through pictorial comprehension and the use of visual language, I can make the child correspond between graphemes and phonemes.

I will also use clay modeling to learn the alphabet, words and concepts.

Finally I will evaluate them by giving them a reading test and a dictation on specific words which they might have used during the session .:

Sampling: I

The focus of your study is human subjects, who will they be and how will you select them?

The focus of my study will be girls and boys of Rajhans vidyalaya.

Age group of 15-16 years.

I will first identify the dyslexic students from the three divisions 11th,A B and C, by giving all the 40 students a simple reading and a spelling test .This test will be based on the level of the 9 th grade students.

After evaluating this test I will be able to identify the dyslexic students.

In order to be sure that I have been able to identify the students ,

I will also ask the teachers of different subjects like science, economics,to let me inspect the identified students examination papers to analyse the spelling errors.

Data Collection:

What type(s) of data will you collect and what data-collection methods will you use (e.g., observation, student records, interviews, surveys, pencil and paper tests, performance assessments, focus groups, etc.). How will you use triangulation to corroborate findings? How will you analyze or synthesize your data? What is your timeline?

My data collection method will be;

Pencil paper test for spellings.

Interview with parents to follow the childs progress.

Phonetic charts.

Rubrics designed to observe the child`s misspelled words and reading speed.

TRIANGULATION::

-spelling test scores

interview -reading check list

Ethics: In addition to discussing what permissions you will need and the protections you will provide for human subjects, discuss any personal perspectives and/or biases you have that might impact how you approach your question.

I will write a letter asking for permission to the The Principal of Rajhans Vidyalaya , Mrs.Deepa Srivastava, to allow me to conduct this research on the 11th grade dyslexic students.

In this letter I will promise complete dedication on my part and also promise that I will be able to show good results and an improvement among the dyslexic students.

I will also take permission from my students and give a detailed report to the parents.

It is Human to have likings and disliking towards people.

But I will develop an objective approach during this research.

But keeping a teachers ethics in mind ,I will remain unbiased.

Keep only the progress of the students in mind and their self confidence.

I will be fair, accurate and just in my evaluation.

FINDINGS

How will you report your findings? What types of tables and charts do you envision including in your report?

Name of student dictation Reading speed Phonetic use\of language

The interview with the parents will also help me find if there is progress in my students and if they are now picking up new material to read.

ACTION PLAN

In approximately 200 words, discuss what you will do with your finished study. How, and with whom, will you share it?

With the finished study, I will first take the parents in confidence and share the evaluation and the progress of the students. The Principal will also keep a complete copy of the results and progress of the students.

I will publish my study in the Times of India section , called NIE. This is a special section for student and teacher inter action .

I will also publish this research in the monthly edition of` Education Today`.

ASSESSMENT DESIGN PROJECT

T his assessment is an adaptation of an actual assessment instrument that I obtained from my mentor ,Susan Randoll, from Kenmore Middle School,Arlington.

I feel that this is most appropriate to my school academics. This can be applied when we teach article writing ,newspaper report or even character analysis in literature.

This assessment very clearly highlights how a child should be judged for his creative ability and most importantly use of English language.

This actually sets a standard for the teacher removing all doubts and also solves the problem of

being bias. The teacher knows exactly the criteria of judging the child, if he is able to form simple sentences, if the paragraph is well organized if there is a varied use of vocabulary. All these clear dimensions can help her to evaluate the child`s written work in a fair and just manner.

This particular assessment assists the teacher in objectively assessing the introduction, the unambiguous thesis statement relevant explanation, a sentence closure or transition to the other paragraph.

The descriptive details are checked by the teacher ,if the child has attempted to use complex sentences and most importantly if he makes mechanical and grammatical errors.

Using the table given below I will also use AF C-ACCURACY FLUENCY AND CONTENT.
