SHADOW CATCHER + Design Intent
In this set of drawings, I designed a pavilion located by the Providence River by constructing it under different sunlight conditions: 9:00 a.m., noon and 4:00 pm. The intensity of the shadow creates a sense of openness and enclosure depending on the time of the day, adding to the dynamics of the space by the river.

transitions from a formal arrangement to a wilder, less maintained strategy.
+ The Pearl Strategy
The goal of this studio is to construct a path and three botanical study areas on the site. I would like the programs to be woven into the sites.
As people walk through the site, they are immersed into the broader context of the site, with interval experiences of smaller spatial pockets.

Planting Strategy:
Row of trees as linkage to frame view and as thickened edges.
At the entrance, rows of honey locust are placed along the ridge of the landform, following by a perpendicular allee of black locust trees leading to the maritime forest.
The existing trees dictate the placement of the road. New trees are then woven within the existing pattern to form a system composed of diagonal allees and horizontal allees.

+ The Botanical Illustration StudioAfter turning, you suddenly see the elevated studio, structured like trees standing in the forest. You can either walk up into the “canopy”, which is the interior studio space, or you can go under the studio and observe the ground conditions of the maritime forest. There are blocks of platform for you to set up a drawing board, and in between white stone pebbles are contained in a metal border. Tall shrubs will be planted in the woods, and birds will have places to hide from you.

+ Intro
A roofscape project followed by a proposal to redesign the parking lot adjacent to the Cam-bridge YMCA buliding.
The final proposal culminated a group presentationto the prin-ciple at the YMCA.
+ YMCA and Public Space?
To use the Central Square branch of the YMCA - its activities, facili-ties, and property holdings - to identify new opportunities for this long-standing institution to further contribute to the pub-lic realm and redefine its urban landscape.
+ Goal
Project I: Enhance the roofscape to provide space for individual and small group activities.
Project II: Relocate parking lot and activate underutilized backstreets in order to transform Central Square from a linear street into a comprehensive space for congregation and outdoor activities

+ Concept
The roofscape consisting of different heights/functions will be linked by units of vertical element. It will be-come a post system that supports the surface.
The imagined continuous line can be interpreted as YMCA’s mission to be a place for all-ages.
+ Draped Surface
The study method of FOLDING be-comes a ramp system. Through fold-ing I create slope, and the degree of slope informs where to walk/stand. The activities and trajectory are no lon-ger defined by definite lines.

+ ConceptActivating the Backstreet Open Space to Redefine Central Square.
Central Square, in Cambridge, MA, has a vibrant community but lacks a geographic center and outdoor space for communal activities.
What can happen when a parking lot is relocated and becomes a community space with playgrounds, galleries and cafés, and a basketball court for the youth? How can Central Square be redefined by activating a backstreet open space?
+ StrategyIncorporating the embedded street system and linking odd lands into a park system.

I and three other students were selected to present our design work to the YMCA director and her administration. This outreach generated a lively discussion and exchange of ideas that helped the YMCA look at their role in the community through a new lens.
Fresh Kills Staten Island Green Belt
La Tourette Park
Brown Field
+ Site
LaTourette Park, adjacent to Fresh Kills on Staten Island. The southern part of the park was once a landfill site, receiving solid garbage from Manhattan. As the area became a park in 1960, some parts of the land-fill were cleaned out, invasive plants were removed, and some native plants were replanted.
+ Goal
Considering derelict soil conditions and community needs to propose a schematic design to the director of the Green Belt in Staten Island and chief of design in New York City Parks and Recreation.

Oscillation
+ Concept
Once a natual woodland by the river, the natural state of the site is forever altered. I want to shape and redefine the site again with natural elements, and alter the land to promote the for-mation of microclimate.
+ Soil Conditions
High concentration of lead in soil on the western end of the park requires further investigation. In raw esti-mate, 31.6 acres of land need to be reclaimed, and a 2’ layer of original Fresh Kill soil needs to be removed in order to put in 2’ of new soil.
This will hasten the process of NYS-DEC review and reduce the overall budget without risking the denial of the various design requests.

WATER SYSTEMStorm Water Reuse on Site
Essentially the entire design acts like a series of check dams. The varieties of water management systems allows for infiltration to occur in a variety of soil and hard-scape conditions. In the scheme the water moves down in a series of steps: infiltra-tion planters, bio-retention depressions, and sheet drains, which slowly filter and clean the water.

+ Internship contributionsIn the summer of 2009 I interned at Mikyoung Kim Design, oversaws and participated in most aspects of this residential project. This set of drawings was created for the community enviromental impact review as well as publications.
+ ConceptForebay Basin can purify wa-ter and makes maintance of the ponds more efficient. These ren-derings of the garden of a resi-dence on Long Island testify that the aesthetic of function is possible in design.

During my three-month internship at Old Farmer Landscape Architecture Company, I spent
my working hours on Shanghai Shibei Industrial New Zone with the chief designer Shan-Hui
Suan. We are working on creating a space to slow living pace in this industrial park.

INSIDE / OUTSIDEArchitecture Studio 2009: A House of Limited Means
Designing a house for choreogra-pher including an outdoor dancing studio. Considering the usage of home space over her lifespan, this project is designed entirely through modeling and hand-drawn sections and plans to reveal the spatial qual-ity without using fancy renderings.
Studying the relationship of interior and exterior through concise section drawings of the house and a detailed model.
Precedent study : Reconstruct Norwegian Architect Sverre Finn’s House with models and drawings.
Studio : Create luxurious living experience with limits on the size of the space and energy usage.
