Duca D’ Aosta square

A new hotel in Duca d’Aosta square means creating a new space in the memories of the city that could be a new presence in the daily experience. The former building is a remarkable architecture especially for its urban character, its color and ma-teriality. The pace and the depth of the new facades arise from the extent of the old’s one, whose modules were doubled in accordance with the monumental square and portico. The ver-tical elements get gradually thinner in the upper levels of the building while in parallel the openings become larger till they disappear on the top floor, merging with the sky. The hotel has approximately 170 different rooms overlooking the square, and is crowned by a rooftop terrace facing the city.

The wood project stems from the desire of creating a space rather than a building. It looks for an immediate relationship with scale of the architectures and of the open space with the individuation of the correct size for the unusual scale along with the desire to use a spatial principle and not a form, thus scale suggest similarities to linear systems of stoà from Medi-terranean classicism. The unit of space and structure is made evident by the use of wood as a single material, choosing not to deal with the issue of diversity rather than with the unifor-mity one. The system repeats reiterating at different scales the same tapered column with median entasis, and the same slab element. In this way both biggest units and the smallest ones are composed with the same precast system. The project with its bareness offers the charm that structures have: the lack of what binds the building to a kind of contemporarity and makes it universal, giving up with the unnecessary.

The area of the intervention is about 5000 m2, situated on a slope facing the sea and also very close to Porto Rotondo of Sardinia. Pines, myrtles, cypress trees, hedges partly sponta-neous and partly planted define a character of the absolute predominance of nature against the artificial. Starting with the valorisation of this place, the relation between the border of the plot, the frame of the sea and the horizon, the project tries to create a place of great balance and quality.

This project completes the puzzle defined by Erik van Egerrat’ s masterplan which works as an artificial ground, a green blanket that integrates at different altitudes in the park including a sys-tem of different functions. Like a missing piece, the construc-tion resolves the relation both with the close buildings, which have already been designed, and also with the limit road.
The design followed a principle of continuity of components, integrated with each other there rooting the morphology of the park. It is not realized in three separate buildings but in a structure that is in continuous types.

The aim of the project was to define a sensible and balanced relationship with the place. The intervention is integrated as a figure, almost an organic element that arises from specific relationship with the context. The report and the change in elevation of the soil and the landscape are the materials that build the project with the ground the project operates a de-fined principle of rooting towards the north slope where the house seems to bite the mountain, inserendovisi until it disap-pears and “emancipation “in the south, with an overhang that projects into the valley to capture the horizon. To the north, an open courtyard to the Mount allows you to look at the profile of the pinnacles of dolomite which at 1200m of altitude con-tinuing the green plane inclined virtually closing the fourth side of the house.

palermo ITPCA_Palermo Coast Actions
January 2014

almada PTREidentiry: REconnect, REconstruct, REestablish
June 2013
REconnect: The main objectives of the proposal is to re-think the whole territorial living system providing new hierarchies, new connections, some potential axes and the realisation of underground parking lots that would host the new flows generated by the future functions.REconstruct: The recovery of Lazareto building, the requalification of the existing petrol deposits and the potential new services of the University, would become elements that contribute to the image change of the en-tire area. The project tries to define the elements that identify the landscape, the relationship between them, in order to make it part of a bigger “urban system”. The petrol deposits, part of the recent story of Porto Brandão and of the today’s industrial image of the city, had been redefined under a new scenario. They had been pre-served as signs of industrial archaeology and a part had been cut off and reused having in mind the new func-tions. Their “footprints” become new places of aggre-gation, landscape elements, always containing the new functions.REestablish:There is no intense of leaving any sign on the ground that could put in dander the natural territorial stability, but only after understanding the area and its energies, to transform the new functions in real land-scape architecture. The terraces with the new plantation re-establish the space order, creating hierarchies and hosting new functions.

MACROThe various interventions are defined, from the MACRO scale to the MICRO scale, operating in connection with the building and the green system.
MICROIn the architectural scale the interventions are translated in relation with the various functions and the elements of the landscape. The wall becomes the connector between the two systems.
DETAILIn the urban area the wall contains the functions and unifies the vocabulary of the city,
in the landscape the wall supports the terraces that in some cases include also functions.

The two bridges are crucial elements for completing of the lo-cal cycle network and the territorial ciclo-pedestrian system of Milan, which together with the metro offers new ways and opportunities for sustainable use of the area. The bridges fol-low the rules of the city’s network rather than the infrastruc-tural system of the canal, producing a clear hierarchy between the two systems. In addition, by being a natural continuation of the urban web it makes it also visible to the passengers of the boats. The bridge is treated as a simple silhouette and gets compared to the natural and urban landscape in a discrete way, giving a form of transparency through the slim element of the parapet, and in the same time leaves people, by crossing the bridge, to look on the moving water.

The proposal defines a kind of “ artificial geography “ that interprets the place working on the redefinition of the nature of the existing terrain in grade between the start place west towards the mountain profiles and east to the untouched hilly landscape.A sequence of three “ cliffs “ at varying heights corresponding to the phases of implementation of the project exceeds integrates between their built spaces , gardens, water bodies, incorporating the streets , creating a system where as in the structure of the historical city spaces are in relation to each other to build a space on a human scale , made up of places measured and protected, where the silence is broken by the fountains and the steps of the inhabitants, where to stay becomes a pleasure, spiritual and physical.Three vertical elements at different heights ( hotels) make it recognizable from afar the intervention that becomes the starting point for a redevelopment of the existing neighboring village .The project defines a richness and variety of functions between their articulated in order to define a balanced mix that knows how to appreciate the mutual relationship.

The project is part of an area on the boundary between open space and sporting activities related to parking and those built to the south of the railway. The project acts as a regulator of relations between the existing components , using a scale that manages to be supra . It generates a system of open and built spaces resulting in highly integrated protected areas of great quality. It establishes a principle device dell’edificato defined as paratactic (a kind of bar code) that takes measurements of the old school and builds new buildings with intervals of different sizes and in relation to each other . As a counterpoint, a walkway on the west side - shelter alongside the existing volume without touching it except in an access point . The shelter connection linking all the buildings together with a row of trees and a road - the square that became a meeting place outdoors for the whole neighborhood . The program specified in the notice is interpreted by optimizing the use of space and organizing functional units which make it possible to clearly identify the orientation and the use of space .The presence of dynamic views also allows the occupier of the building to maintain contact with the outside getting fundamental stimuli for the human being such as those related to changes in external weather conditions or the passage of time in terms of hours of the day and passing of the seasons .

It points to illustrate the concepts of the biblio - mediatecha and how it is assumed architectural design can make concrete places :1 ) the library as a place open to the city without formal controls .2) Building representative without rhetoric , comfortable and welcoming, open to everyday life and its site features central to contemporary urban life .3 ) Determining the relationship with the multimedia and multigenerazionalità of cultural forms capable of integrating the different forms of communication and multi-functionality , change, connected to how the access to culture for cultural and generational groups , the different modes of cultural offerings.4 ) The library as a new alternative shopping place for socializing without being oppositional , sensual and pleasant place , space for a new form of sociability , a place of great quality in balance between historical and contemporary , including the persistence of values and their actualization and accessibility.5 ) True laboratory of ideas.6) Location where the aspects of balance between artifice and the urban environment are central .The concept could be described poetically in the heart of Monza the new library has a “ green heart” .

The main objectives of the proposal was to create a new landmark for the city and to preserve the green area of the site. We proposed an 101m tower, which would include the hotel complex and whose sculptural shape would rise from the green hill as a visual landmark recognizable from all sides of the city. We took advantage of the inclination of the area and designed a ramp that connects the complex with the urban tissue, offering a promenade for the visitors. The business centre is organized under this ramp. The same vocabulary is used for the design of the residential complex, whose form follows the inclination of the east part of the plot. This arrangement intensifies the verticality of the tower, and creates a new green landscape in the centre of Yerevan. The form of the tower was chosen as a reference to the monolithic architecture of the buildings found in Yerevan, though interpreted in a contemporary way, by using a light, semi-transparent material. This perforated element not only enables the view from inside out but also makes the tower distinguish during the night with the illumination of the inner spaces.

The subject of this competition was to create a new material, an innovative one by combining different kind of properties. It was an exercise of matching materials of specific use in order to convert them to another type with different uses. We decided to work in layers, adding the different properties each time. Main goal was to produce an insulating material which can transmit light. Using a piece of profiled [F]oam of 15mm as the basis of acoustic and thermal insulation, we made holes fixing [S]ilicon pipes in it. The silicon pipes have the ability of transmitting light without giving clear visibility of the back side and also work as insulating material. In the backside an aluminum [M]esh was fixed as a retaining layer giving to this piece of material the additional ability of plasticity, taking different kind of forms.

The main issue on which the competition focuses, is the relation between the scheduled buildings and the Holy Rock and the New Acropolis Museum. We aim to eliminate the complexity of the scheduled buildings’ backside and the two buildings. An additional structure, designed to stand at a distance from the facades, could be one way of reducing the amount of information projected by the two buildings as seen from the museum. The perforation of the material emphasizes the Acropolis’ rock and additionally offers lighting for the apartments of the first floor. The preservation of the functionality of the listed buildings whose adjacency with a public buildings raises questions of the relationship between public and private, makes the proposed intervention more complex. For this reason, the structure will function along the lines of a screen. By installing the panel at an angle to the buildings rather than in linear fashion, we limit visibility from and towards the museum. At the same time, we allow the residents the possibility of a visual escape towards the courtyard of the museum and by extension towards the city. As for the flat facades, there will be a different approach. The same kind of panels are placed head-on and with creepers on them, so as to achieve uniformity in the composition. The simplicity of the proposal does not compete with beauty and significance of the sacred rock. On the contrary, it highlights the beauty of the Acropolis.

The rooftops of Medina are large areas, abandoned, full of sat-ellite antennas and useless objects. Being with no use, even though the traditional house was supposed to have the rooftop as a vital space for the everyday life of the residents, stands over a crowded network of mixed uses.
Taking into consideration the fact that the families living in this neighborhood do not have access to cultivated land, as well as the fact that the terrace area is completely abandoned, I propose a tile which can be adapted to all terraces and which will give the inhabitants the opportunity to grow their own vegetable and fruits. These green tiles apart from their abil-ity to be cultivated will also hold slots on their surface which will function as inputs where devices can be attached, such as public infrastructure and cooking devices. Thus the green tile serves not only as means to provide fresh food, but also as an event generator creating a vivid living space on the terrace zone which until now has been abandoned. Lastly everyday life will expand vertically in this landscape of terraces which will consist of this pattern formed by the green tile puzzle.

miguel mesa del castillo clavelenergy + social collectors in Tunis
thesis project
This project works towards the upgrade of interaction through principles of freedom, in Muslim cities where the politics abuse religion in order to captivate liberal ideas as well as latitude. Geopolitical condition in the region: A short research in Tunisian everyday life, motivated me to understand the sources of this freedom-less nation. I came across several articles which proved that Tunisia is not what governors try to convince, the citizens of this country and tourists, that it is. Even if anyone could perceive that Tunisia is an up to date, democratic, European-like country, is more of a fake image created from people specifically interested in abusing this country and its nation. Behind the idea of Muslim, they hide the non existence of freedom of speech and inequality of sexes.By analysing the section of Medina into the social characteristics of the different levels and having in mind that tourists should have controlled access in the intervention, I propose a network of nodes-structures on the terraces that can work as event generators creating a vivid living space. A structure as a landmark to “call” people for social gathering like the pre-existing minarets of Medina which call people to pray by the top of the minaret. The existing ones also work as a visual cue to a Muslim community. I propose a self-sufficient tower which works as an energy and social collector, as the energy is supposed to be used for the social uses. This structure could motivate further, people to gather on the rooftops and socialise.

shadow and sitting device
seminar_experimental structures team work
The investigation, related to the experimental structure, started with the goal to create a outsite shadow and sitting device. Working for the parabolic surfaces we have started by rotating a normal pentagon in the vertical axis, and then built surfaces in between the edges in order to obtain a parabolic shape. The next step was to have 3 contours from that tubular shape and support these contours with the parabolic surfaces which are to be formed by linear elements.Material wise, for the contours we used laser-cut mdf with holes on it and for the linear elements we used plastic water pipes. The joints between those to elements were an important part of the structure. In order to solve this angular connection between those two stiff elements, we used flexible pipes that can easily be assembled and unassembled. The pipes were placed in a way to achieve different surface qualities. Where on the upper part of the structure it creates different shadow and light qualities, on the bottom part gets denser to enable sitting and leaning area inside the structure.

redefining the relationship between the second pier and the city (authentic title)
thessaloniki GR port city portfebruary 2008
Paka Alkminiteam work
My diploma project (in collaboration with Kargakou Vasiliki), had as a subject the urban redesign of an area in the commercial harbour of Thessaloniki. Specifically the chosen area of intervention is a diagonal axis, which represents the boundary between the historical and the more recent section of the port and at the same time it visually connects the entrance of the city with the sea. From the early beginning we focused on three crucial issues; the connection between the port and the city, the domination of the green space and the reassurance of vitality in the area through multiple different uses. Along with the new activities that are being proposed in the project, we also found it interesting to maintain the uses that are related to the port and preexisted in the area. Through this project there would be a radical change in the scene of the second pier and it will generate a new relationship between the port and the city. Hopefully the pier will become a new public place for Thessaloniki.

Ananiadou_Tratselateam work
This project concerns the study and planning of a degraded space, in order to convert it into a viable space with an upgraded quality of life. Today, the area is an empty space in the continuity of the urban network, due to its unattractive appearance and the absence of human activities or even of people. The basic idea is the creation of a place which could join together the two different areas, the urban neighborhood and the gully. Our main focus was the border or the space between the two areas to be broken down in order to create access from the one to the other. Of great importance is the existence of water, which has positive effects on the microclimate of the area and it also enhances the quality of space. The gentle incline of the ground facilitates easy entrance in the area. But the essential need of marking the points of possible entrances will be realised through the use of different materials on the ground. Along the length of the gully, some paths will be mapped out. Those paths will meet at various points, to create a kind of crossroad which will give a traverse communication to the field and furthermore a point of rest and view. In the middle of these places, deciduous trees will be planted so that these spots can be easily seen, even from a long distance, and so that they can also provide shade during the summer.
