Submitted into the RDI international student design competition. A two-story high-end accessory store located in Toronto, Canada. The existing building and program were provided. The solution, an integrated ribbon concept where everything from the stairs, display products, and facade are part of a series of ribbons. This gives the company a strong identity. Company branding was also an aspect of the design. Deziro, the name chosen, means desire in a language created to be non-biased. This relates to Toronto’s cultural diversity.

The project scope uses three stories of a high-rise building in Austin, Texas for a digital media firm. The program was gathered from a conversation with the “client.” Wellbeing, innovation, and collaboration were carefully considered.Biophilic ideas are seen throughout the design. Each floor is inspired by a natural landscape in Austin. The use of these natural forms contribute to the placemaking and wayfinding of the office. The main floor is the river containing large communal spaces and major circulation. The cave houses IT, analytics, and digital library with carved-like elements to create coziness. The mountain is where the bulk of the creative work is done and includes prospect and refuge spaces.

A project done while in Copenhagen for a “folkekøkken,” which roughly translates to soupkitchen or a place for communal meals. Located in the old meatpacking district of Copenhagen, it offers an environment where the diverse community can enjoy a meal together.

The drawings shown used a rough Revit model, sketched over with pen, and rendered in marker.

THE PEOPLE’S KITCHEN

17

Page 18: PORTFOLIO_courtney albracht

A project done in Copenhagen that reflects Danish culture. The space promotes contemplation, encompasses discovery, and allows one to become absorbed in thought. The biophilic aspects give way to interpretation, like how the light on the hammer pounded metal suggests sunlight dancing on water. This then relates to the harbor and canal directly outside of the historic building. Sculptures can be viewed as one circulates throughout the space. Hidden technology is also provided for lectures and readings.

The end table is inspired by Danish furniture. Piece is made of maple and ash wood. Legs were turned on lathe Some pieces cut on CNC.

One sheet of 1.5 mm thick plywood was provided and pieces were to be laser cut to make a chair. The solution, a knock down piece held together with clothesline. The bend of the plywood is utilized to create curves without framework.

The lounge chair is designed to accommodate a variety of seating options. Bending plywood was vacuum formed then sculpted with hand tools. A steel frame elevates the seat, and connects the piece with t-nut bolts.

Transition is the movement, passage, or change from one state to another. Being in the military is difficult and demanding, but transitioning to civilian life can be a challenge in itself. This transition is shown to be more difficult when a veteran has found their experience to be “emotionally traumatic or distressing” while serving. For the Wounded Warriors rehabilitation center near Manhattan, Kansas, I choose to focus on substance abuse, depression, and PTSD. A site on Milford Lake was chosen to take advantage of what water can provide mentally and physically.

After research and evaluating programmatic needs of the center five types of therapy were selected - mind fitness training, art therapy, drama therapy, culinary therapy, and counseling as well as biofeedback. These are reflected in three buildings connected by the central exhibition space.^ Diagrams show how the concept is applied spatially, transitioning between spaces and to the outdoors.> Diagram of one’s feelings as they progresses from the entrances down to the lake.

The central space connecting the three buildings includes the cafe, gift shop, and the wounded warriors exhibit. Later in the design process skylights were introduced to have a contemplative and hopeful impact on the interiors. The wooden pathway leads directly to the lake.

Counseling rooms vary in size and decor. Individual, group, and family therapy are offered. A space is also designated for biofeedback therapy.

Drama therapy helps patients act out situations in a safe environment. It builds trust, awareness, and learning from situations.

The art making process is therapeutic in itself. It can increases personal insight, cognitive memory, ability to cope with stress and traumatic experiences. It can also improves interpersonal relationships, and help to achieve greater self-fulfillment.

Being involved in the process of food from the garden to the dinner table is especially effective for substance abuse patients. The courtyard is adjacent to the cafe, kitchen, learning kitchen, and roof garden.

CULINARY THERAPY

Page 38: PORTFOLIO_courtney albracht

M-fit is a program the military has adapted to improve mental performance. Research has shown that regular meditation helps depression, shrinks the part of the brain that controls fear and cultivates the areas of the brain responsible for memory and emotional regulation. The space offers a private view of the lake. There is also a private meditation room. The space can also be used for other activities and events.

>> The lake offers a sense of therapy. It draws wounded soldiers and their families to the site and creates a sense of community. The boat house has a lounge and eating space above, and boat storage and locker rooms at the dock level. > Site plan shows garden on part of the roof and access to a beach.
