CO-FACILITATOR helped organize a series of workshops teaching design methods to middle school children. led a workshop on drawing standards, and gave a presentation on aspects of the discipline of architecture. taught a small group in applying the skills acquired from these workshops into researching and design-ing a portable exhibition for the san francisco exploratorium.

BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE vdm book award 2011

INTERN brought on as an intern for a single residential project in the oakland hills. the job detail included working on a variety of drawings rapidly and iteratively, whilst also developing door and window schedules, and material and plumbing specifications. due to irregular site topography, i was also met with the task of drawing a variety of foundation conditions.

MODEL MAKING ASSISTANT assisted in the building of a 14-foot long model that was to serve as part of the soupergreen exhibition at the architecture and design museum in los angeles.

a hybridized single-room home and gallery space asserts this dichotomy of program by allowing the street, and by extension the park across the street, to erode into the projects massing. through a common entry at the rear of the site, two different experiences are found by the user, should they be the home owner, or a gallery visitor. for the former, a pragmatic means of organizing the more diurnal functions of a home towards the street, whilst the bedroom and the bathroom are found towards the back articulate a cyclic temporality to living. However, for the gallery visitor, it leads to placing him or her in the middle of the space, suggesting a rejection of outright display hierarchy. however, a central path does guide the visitor back to the street, but in a manner that does not reveal its function until one is lead first to the exit, and then hav-ing to turn to reorient themselves to the street. finally, the elaborate scaling of different sub spaces suggests, for the home, the functions of each space. the living room, used for hosting, maximizes its ceiling height, in stark contrast to the bedroom, which has a low ceiling that places an emphasis on horizontal functionality of the space.

for over half a century, the original bathhouse, built by adolph sutro, at point lobos has lay in ruins. with only the pool slab and the foundation for the pump house not being totally reclaimed by the elements. with the rest of the site being made of loose sandy-soil and hosting various flora and fauna, placing the new

bathhouse above the existing ruins made sense both structurally and ecologically. However, the size of the project makes it impossible to limit itself to just the ruins, and so further foundation strategies had to be developed in order to interact with the loose

materiality of the ground minimally. formally, the faceted monolithic object stands as something that emerges from the ground, but then opens up to an unobstructed view of the ocean. the faceted geometry also extends to the floor

such that a constant state of instability found until one is immersed in the serenity of the pools, which again lay in contrast to the choppy waters of the pacific ocean.

situated at the upper slope of point lobos, the conservency functions as a museum, library, and research laboratory for the point lobos state natural reserve. there is also an attached cafe. the project minimizes its footprint, whilst using sectionally oblique floor plates as a means of increasing actual floor space, whilst still complying to ada codes. the project uses forced perspective as a tool for emphasizing the connection between san francisco and the pacific ocean, pushing point lobos to a position of an educational interface between the dense urban condition it recedes from and the biologically rich coast it opens into. at the interior of the project, these perspectival tools serve to demarcate a differentiation between different program types such that the primary programmatic elements open outwards, whilst the second and tertiary program types expand in the opposite direction.

the hub hotel is located in the emergent chelsea neighborhood of manhattan, coming directly off of the highline park. an initial analysis of manhattan island found the borough to be economically diverse, which also indicates, however, a fragmented and divided culture to the neighborhood as exemplified by the great sense of loneliness that is exhibited within the area. the hub responds to this by opening up to the highline itself, using the park as its grand entrance. this creates a public plaza that serves as a buffer between the park and the hotel, and also creates an event space that can draw many people in close quarters at a regular basis. further-more, shared program for visitors - alternating kitchens and laundry rooms - provide collective spaces that encourage people whom would otherwise be strangers to engage one another.

with the destruction of a freeway overpass in hayes valley in the mid-2000s, the neighborhood saw a new demand for dense urban housing as more and more people flocked there for its new found quietness. The destruction of the freeway also created a large scar in the cityscape creating opportune voids to address the housing issue. stackhouse stands over two lots. In the context of a rapidly densifying san francisco, stackhouse uses a strategy of shifting units to open up garden, or typical yard spaces for residents, with each space share by four adjacent units. as per zoning regulations, the lowest level on the lot facing hayes street is dedicated for commercial spaces, thus allowing a further privatization of these back yards. between the highly public commercial spaces and the more private garden spaces is a further layer of shared spaces on the northern lot where resident communal spaces open up into a theatre space that anticipates events organized for and by the project.

Spurred by the economic opportunities of recently found energy and mineral deposits, brazil expects for population growth trends to push its people deeper into the land. Especially at risk is the pantanal - a wetland that sits atop the guarani aquifer, which is the largest source of fresh water in the world. a union of south american nations - iirsa - also plans to dam and drain parts of the pantanal to facilitate economic growth. the riparian collective is an urban development that promotes awareness and conservation within the pantanal by creating commu-nities that are tied to it. at its focus stands a satellite research center tied to numerous academic establishments that studies the local ecology, and provides an ecotourism destination that serves to sustain the development.

a series of treethouse-like structures in the pantanal form a building type that consists of parts fabricated off site that can be rapidly constructed on site. this reduces the impact of heavy machinery in such a sensitive site. deployed in clusters, a central path ties all of the buildings together, weaving between the old growth trees and distributing its weight amongst them as a means of limiting direct impact on the ground. The suspended paths and buildings also allow the communities created to bypass the issues created by the seasonal flooding of the pantanal.

sensory disparium is a performing arts center that lifts the intensely prescribed programming of the program type, and delaminates and then informally overlays sensory qualities to create a heightened experience. That is to say that qualities of smell, sound and light are arranged on different axis and then recombined to make a spatial procession a sensory experience. thus, one can traverse through a path of controlled smells, butin doing so he or she experiences light and sound in an uncontrolled, or non-prescribed manner.

the california college of the arts san francisco campus is almost entirely a hard and sterile white space. however, its deployed strategy of loose arrangement of spaces does allow for a very dynamic sense of flow. flora was developed as a means of maintaining and even enhancing the aspect of flow in the campus, whilst combating the sterile or neutral appearance of the space. flora allows for a multiplicity of hanging structures that house plant life to invade he campus, and informally subdivide the central space of the building - the nave. flora makes the openness of the nave, and its great lighting responsible for more than just illuminating student projects.

luciferin redux focuses on designing and diagramming according to biological principles. that is to say that projects are developed systematically, and repeating patterns are implemented to allow projects to develop from the bottom-up. With an emphasis of complexity over complication, extra attention was paid to graphical language as a mode of illustrating growth, decay, and generational developments of systems.
