Page 10: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

"E-CO-FFEE" is a series of multifunctional devices that aspires to encourage the sharing and recycling of used coffee grounds to develop a sustainable coffee consumption system. "E-CO-FFEE" brings together the both ends of the consumption behavior: coffee shop owners and customers with an innovative module design of various uses that enables users to make the best of used coffee grounds provided by the shop owners and further on generates a general sense of environmental concern. The recycle process is as follows: used coffee grounds shared by shop owners → taken home by general customers → heated by candles, coffee grounds used as aroma → dried through heating process → dried coffee grounds used as deodorizer and desiccator → moldy coffee grounds used as compost in soil, and back to nature. "E-CO-FFEE" intends to convey a green thinking in modern society through the embodiment of a lifestyle in harmony with nature.

Coffee grounds can be used as all-natural aroma and give out a mellow scent. The scent lasts for weeks and even gets mellower as time goes by.

The love for coffee in Taiwan generates 30,000 kg of used coffee groundsper month, and most is disposed improperly, adding unwanted pollutants to the environment.

After roasted, coffee grounds' holes become larger than the original and can function as the active carbon.

The original protein is destroyed through the process so it will not hurt the roots when it ’s used as compost. With air, carbon and water added, nitrogenous nutrients found in coffee grounds can b e a n i m p o r ta nt element of fertilizer.

“Aroma” is a stylish air freshener with unique fan blades that blow away all the traditional ones. Unlike any other air fresheners, “Aroma” does not only purify the air but also diffuse fragrance. The cutting edge blades are composed of flat bamboo battens arranged with channels between stripes that facilitate airflow. Also, the capillary effect of bamboo fiber enables the fan blades to absorb the essence added into the little notch around the base of the fan, which gives out a generous scent as it turns. Users can add in any kind of fragrance they prefer, controlling the scents as their hearts desire and easily create applicable atmospheres under different circumstances. The compact and concise design makes "Aroma" an ideal companion on office tables or desks. With the flowing fresh air maybe slightly mint-scented, “Aroma” will definitely boost the productivity and efficiency at work.

Page 20: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

“imPachaPacha” is a piece of work comprised of several recycled items, including a wooden chopping board, two bicycle rims, a bicycle basket, a bunch of twigs and some brass bass strings. We aspire to give new life to these discarded, unwanted goods by upcycling them into a fun and creative object. Imps are a kind of little magical being that carry a sense of free will and enjoyment of all things fun. The chair aims to share the same spirit. It resembles a little elf-like figure running about in the forest, wild and uncontrollable. “Pachapacha” is an onomatopoeia that comes from the sound the chair makes when we sit on the seat made of the bicycle basket and carefully processed twigs. The idea is to recreate the audio scene of perambulating on the fallen leaves and twigs in the forest. With this chair, we hope to evoke the nature experience within everyone’s memory.

04Billow

Page 24: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

“Billow” is a bench design that enacts the beautiful balance between aesthetics and utility. Resembling the rolling billows of the sea, “Billow” not only echoes to different height and shape of waves hitting the seashore but also echoes to different casual sitting postures people have when they’re sitting at ease. This laid-back bench is particularly made for the mood of seaside. Compatible with the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere at seaside area, the bench is designed to accommodate any kind of sitting postures just like the accommodating nature of the sea.

05Fly a Kite

Page 28: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

“Fly a Kite” is a wall light. We strive to overturn the stereotype of wall lights and bring them into life and motion. With the design, we strike a conversation between our living space and the objects within. We regard the wall as a canvas, and our light as paints. Together, they accommodate and interact and create indoor poetic scenery by breathing the outdoor refreshment into the frame. With “Fly a Kite” wall light, we aim to recreate a lighthearted, cheerful but soothing atmosphere in our homes like flying a kite under the blue open sky. As for the lighting, the woven lampshade creates a soft, fluffy and cozy glow. With the wool textured cover, even when the light isn’t turned on, it does not appear to be redundant on the wall, but an elegant ornament that shines on its own.

06Lighten Up

Page 32: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

“Lighten up” is a lamp that aims to not only lighten up the space but also lighten up the hearts. What’s more, the body of the lamp serves as a planter, where real life grows, bringing in a touch of green into modern urban homes. The little white ball seems to rest on the grass when the lamp is turned off. When the light is turned on, the ball floats up and down, creating a sense of airiness and bounciness, lightening up the stress people have after a day’s hard work. When the lamp is lit in a dark room, the light reflected on the ball looks like the spark of a firefly dancing in the bushes, creating a natural, cozy, and soothing atmosphere.

Page 33: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

- The bal l is blown up with the fan-and-tube centralizing wind. LED is on the central top of the fan so it won't interfere with the airflow. The wire goes out from the pedestal, where air intake occurs.

- The floating ball can be changed with balls in different colors or textures, creating different ambiances when illuminated by LED. If the ball is covered with fragrance, the wind can help diffusing the scent into the air throughout the whole space.

Page 36: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

From traditional squared and upright bookcases to avant-garde boldly colorful Ettore Sottsass “Carlton Room Divider,” bookshelves are proved to be more than bookshelves. They are an interplay of solids and voids, the epitome of the beauty of structure. To me, my idea for bookshelf structures is not rigid; I aim to break the frame with a little bit of twist and turn. Inspired by Carlton Room Divider, which succeeded in giving the linear book arrangement a brand new 2D angle, my ambition is to push the limit even further by bringing the books into a 3D world. "Spiral" is a bookshelf that goes 360°. The elegant spiral structure does not only serve aesthetic purpose, but also makes books “stand out.” Readers can easily browse the cover of the books from every direction. Even better, there’s no more need to crowd up in front of a wall of books because the 360° arrangement allows a circle of people to look for the books they want at the same time.

Page 37: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

Traditional shelf is composed of rectangles and it’s only one dimension. Being more than vertical and horizontal, Ettore Sottsass's shelf is a breakthrough. Its partitions stretch toward different directions in a lively style.

So, what's the next? “Spiral!” With the dynamic twist of spiral and partitions gradually changing directions, “Spiral” is surely overturning the stereotype of bookshelves.

Have you ever experienced that you work extra hours and it’s getting really late. You’re waiting for the bus to come to do some grocery shopping but the bus delays and you almost miss the open hour of the stores. "iShop" is a novel semi-virtual shopping center. “iShop card” is a card that integrates the functions of credit cards, loyalty cards, reward cards and membership cards, with default customer billing information, which includes bill-to and ship-to address information, freight and delivery information. With an “iShop card” people can easily browse the catalogues and make a purchase on the screen and have the items delivered whenever and to wherever they want. These “iShop” systems are set at the bus stops, MRT stations or other public transportation waiting areas to provide a convenient shopping platform for people who want to make good use of the time they spend on waiting. In addition, from vendors’ perspective, “iShop” can reduce the cost of maintaining physical shops, and thus increase the revenue.

Page 44: Portfolio_Mei-Ling Lu

This is a project held by a design company named AGUA. Designers are required to modify the interior design of the appointed store, shop or restaurant under the budget of 999 NTD (33 USD). The main purpose of the reorganization and redecoration is to create a new look and a new spirit that best represent the place and attract more customers. We chose a restaurant called “God’s backyard” to launch this project. The restaurant is owned by a Christian couple so our concept is derived from the Bible, where Christians are depicted and allegorized as the sheep in God's backyard. Therefore, we designed a series of items with the repeatedly appearing motif of sheep. We designed a flock of sheep in different texture and arranged them in the yard, on the tables, around the bookshelf… every corner in the restaurant. Some of them are installation art that welcomes costumers and others are table games which people can play before or after the dishes are served.

It is a design concept of an exhibition stand for Acer (Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation). The main idea is to create a space that displays the products and at the same time incorporates the characteristics of Acer company- cutting edge technology, modernity, and humanity. The walls are made of black glass, giving the stand a high-tech futuristic exterior. The strongly stylish structure indicates that Acer is much more than a manufacturer company; its aesthetic ambition and taste in design are a notch above its contemporary rival companies. The floor, on the other hand, tones down the sharp and cold texture of glass and plastic with a tender touch of wooden warmth, which represents the highest goal of the technology company- humanity.
