STRATEGY KINGFISHER'STRATEGY KINFISHER‘ IS SET UP TO MAKE THE KINGFISHER BE ABLE TO SURVIVE ALONG-

SIDE THE ENTIRE RIVER BY REVITILISING THE RHINE ON ITS WEAKEST SPOTS.

Spotting the Kingfisher right in the city of Rotterdam in the delta of the river Rhine was the reason to use this exotic looking bird as a 'clean-river-approval‘. The Kingfisher has high demands in terms of clearness of water, in manner of biodiversity and he needs a quiet (but can be relatively small) habitat. By the Kingfisher appearing in the harbor of Rotterdam, conclusion can be made that such a habitat is to be found within 1km distance of the place of spot-ting. If Rotterdam can accomodate this, why don‘t aim for an entire river Rhine to be a habitat for the Kingfisher, all year through, every year?!

IDENTITY OF THE RHINEThe Rhine is a highway for barges, the Rhine is a dump for industries and a threat for the lowerlands whith the risk of flooding. But the Rhine is also a tourist attraction, a fertiliser for many agricultural areas, a slow entity in a fast society and a carrier of a broad biodiversity. The map above gives my personal insight to the different

identities of the Rhine, rising in the 'Bodensee‘ and ending up in the North Sea. The map is based on a research that is done on elements such as; demogra-phics, geographics, quality of water, tourism alongside the Rhine, overall history of the Rhine, waterpatterns, use of the Rhine etc.

allocating the weakest spots

ALLOCATING THE WEAKEST SPOTSThe locations are carefully selected to where the 'STRATEGY KINGFISHER‘ is most needed by the Kingfisher as well as by human beings. Examples of criteria for the kingfisher are: poluted water, unprotec-ted bird areas, little amounts of fauna and flora habi-tants that depend on water and places where nature

comes in small units. Examples of criterea for human beings are: at least 600.000 people surrounding the area, cities that are declining, less popular spaces and places where the river rhine is invisible. The three most urgent spots are to be: Rotterdam, Arnhem Nijmegen and Köln.

Principle 1 - spectrum domains; people - kingfisher

to define how kingfisher and human being can benefit from one another. The further they get to the centre of the spectrum, the access of human beings becomes more difficult. This is in favour of the kingfisher. The other way round, the kingfisher might still get to the se-cond ring but finds its habitat in the green area.

PRINCIPLE 1 - SPECTRUM DOMAINS; PEOPLE - KINGFISHER The strategy consists of two main principles. Principle one shows the spectrum of elements that are related to the specific requirements of Kingfisher and human beings. Within the spectrum there is an overlay of re-quirements of the two, these are interesting in order

Principle 2: waterpatterns

RIVER

+ RIVER-FORELAND + SLUICE/PUMPING STATION

BROOKLETS/DITCHES & FEN MEADOW

SOFT SHALLOW WATER

CANALIZED WATER

PRINCIPLE 2 - WATERPATTERNSAnother part of the strategy is that Rhine water is go-ing to take part in the proposed area and city, principle 2 shows what the new introduced waterpatterns can be. Water can play a very important role in the public space. The potentials of water get maximilized by using it in different patterns. The patterns meet the different

desires of the kingfisher and the human being. The Rhine water will first be filtered in a rheed area, than it will affiliate to the different areas it runs through and eventually be pumped back into the river. In the city the surface water can get collected in so called water-squares and redundant water can be en-trained to the river Rhine.

REFERENCE IMAGES WHEN COMBINING THE TWO PRINCIPLES

THE TWO PRINCIPLES COMBINEDWhen combining the two principles, interesting habitats occur. The images above show what these habitats can look like. For example, having a hard water edge in a not so dense area creates the feeling of a city-park. Or soft water edges with an occasional existing house with sand paths is also very charming!

LOCATION IN COLOGNECologne is the center of the Cologne/Bonn Region with around 3 million inhabitants, Colonge itsself has around 1 million inhabitants and is Germany‘s fourth largest city. The location to implement the 'STRATEGY KINGFISHER‘ has to be upstream, has to have a cer-tain size, may not be too far from the city and can‘t have

perpendicular water barriers. Herefor, the area on the south-east of Cologne is decided to be the most appro-priate. Water of the river Rhine can enter the area on the south end. It is as close by the city of Cologne that a physical ecological link can be made with the green pereferique and inhabitants of Colone can reach the area within half an hour by bike!

Applying the two principles step by step on the southern region of Colone

APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES STEP BY STEP After having determined the area, first the two extremes of the spectrum can be laid on the site, relying on the existing situation. Then, the left over space can be filled up with light orange and yellow. Accordingly, step by step, the different water patterns can be placed on the area. Note; this doesn‘t imply that this is the one and

only way the two principles can be organized! Though, a few parameters such as the exising urban area‘s, the size of the biohabitat of the Kingfisher and the special water-requirements of the Kingfisher were leading pa-rameters in the way the patterns are arranged.

THE STRATEGY TRANSLATED INTO A MAPFinally, the abstract map gets translated into an actu-al plan. The map above shows the existing and new proposed urban area‘s, new roads and paths, the big nature units etcetera. A place is created where there is synergy between the Kingfisher and the human being! Indeed, when the strategy really gets applied, one has

to carefully look at al the other aspects that come when transforming an area. 'STRATEGY KINGFISHER‘ is just a very good first step to approach an area such as this one in South Cologne, or Rotterdam Deltapoort or Arnhem Nijmegen. The strategy can of course also be implemented alongside other rivers that face similar problems as these spots alongside the river Rhine.
