Portfolios for Student-Created Goals and Tracking GrowthPresented by Hope Knight, elementary art teacher “Mrs. Knight’s Smartest Artists”
Welcome to my art room!
My name is Hope Knight.Today we will explore and discuss:
1. Creating student portfolios with goals in mind2. Guiding your students as they create personal art goals3. Tracking these goals using the student portfolios
Part 1: Creating a student portfolio
• Easy, fast access to vocabulary and concepts which are vital to the curriculum• Can be simple, one-size-fits-all or specialized
by grade levels/curriculum• Includes areas for art history, styles and
cultures as well as the elements and principles• Reminders: rules and tips such as “labeling
your paper”• Areas for self-expression and personalization• Portfolios foster a sense of respect toward art
in students and parents alike.
Part 2: Student-created goals
• Students can track their growth, work toward academic goals, and take ownership of their learning. • Teachers begin by creating categories for goals
according to grade level – see your portfolios!• Have a brainstorming session for students to
come up with their own ideas - small groups first, then share as a large group. Teachers take notes and create a class chart for tracking all year.• Distribute charts for each student to select their
top three goals, and add a tip for staying on track.
Part 3: Tracking goals with portfolios
• Goals should be charted at least once per quarter, building up to the final result at the end-of-year. • Students use the projects in the portfolios and
the information on the outer portfolio to track and chart, as well as any written rubrics/critiques/artist statements.• Teachers can choose to make a large graph for
the entire grade level if desired, showing our growth – I like to use “Beginning artist, Developing artist, Accomplished artist” as my benchmarks.• Goal Celebration and Reflection day – ideas?
