GraPhiC exCerCiSe

this project took place in the first semester of my studies. it was focused on developing practical skills of being very accurate, concentrated and the skill of using rapidograph.though first excercises were more about the graphic skills (making 9 perfectly homogenous squares of texture), later excercises were also about creativity: we had to find a strong characteristic of a certain building, express it in a graphic way and then deconstruct and modify it.all these drawings were made exclusively by hand, using ruler and rapidograph.

i SemeSter 2007

Shelter

this was the second project of architectural studies, which was held in the 2nd se-mester of my studies. the task was to design a shelter based on a very personal conceptual approach. the idea of my project was to create the feeling of height, unstability, “being on the edge”. this certain feeling has always been special to me, making me think of the fragility of human life and feel how small my problems actually are.this feeling was created by the certain construction of the shelter (it is based on a single line), which looks very unstable. also the approach to the top platform is spe-cifically narrow, closed space, intensifying the feeling of unsteadiness. When one finally gets to the open platform on the top, the feeling of unstability mixes up with the views of the surrounding landscape and the feeling of vast open space.

family houSe

in the 3rd semester of my studies the architectural project studies were dealing with designing a private house for a family of 2 parents and 2 children. the main idea of my project was organising space through shifts in the heights.also the form of the building is closely related to the shape of the site and at the same time is dividing the coutryard into spaces with different use and character.

arChiteCture Centrethe architecture centre project had to provide office rooms for the staff as well as exhivi-tion rooms, cafe and conference room for the public use. its location could be chosen within an existing part plan near the centre of the city.the idea of my project was to provide a park-like open space in the junktion of the main walking routes. all the exhibition and conference rooms, which do not need natural light, are placed under the gound level and the on-land space is used for the cafe, some tem-poray exhibitions and can be walked through and seen through.

City hall 1

the 3rd year architectural project was the biggest by area and had a very compolicated and diverse program. it had to accommodate all the city government ofiices and related functions (conference rooms, dining rooms, citizen services etc). as the site is located near to the harbour, the touristic aspect also had to be taken into consideration. in my project i wanted to keep the touristic and leisure facilities separated from the city hall building. for this reason the main spaces of the offices are situated in an inward-look-ing “levitating” “blackbox”, which lands on the articulated landscape part, which is more flexible and dealing with the tresspassers. the facade of the “box” works as a shading device to the office workers and also only gives a scarce opportunity for the tresspassers to glance inside.

City hall 2

in the last semester of my bachelor studies the previous project had to be developed fur-ther and could be changed according to the urban situation of the place. for this reason several scenarios of the possible development of the city were proposed and discussed. in my project i defined the site as a junktion of the city promenade, the cultural axis and the water front. therefore one side of the buiding was actively dealing with water, land-scape architecture, public facilities and the gradual flow ot citizens into the bulding.

SaKu toWn develoPmentthe assignment of the 1st semester of master degree studies focused on urban planning and city devel-opment. the challenge was to analyse surroundings of tallinn and their relation to the city. also, to find strengths and propose needed developments in a chosen area situated in the neighbourhood of tallinn. the project was developed as a group work in collaboration with mari rass and Ülle maiste. Saku town was chosen as the focus area. the town is already quite well connected to the city by public transportation like buses and train, but most of the inhabitants use cars to go to tallinn. as a result, a busy car road crosses the town and divides it into halves. the main idea of the proposal is to slow down and reduce traffic trough the town and promote transportation by train. therefore, a new main urban axis is proposed which connects the train station with a new town square situated in the most dense part of the town. formal industrial buldings are trans-formed into public and business facilities and support the pedestrian activity on this new axis.

houSinG for elderlythe project was dealing with the problems of population aging and suitable housing for contemporary elderly. one of the main focuses was on the connections and communi-vation of the elderly dwellers. the main meeting area is designed as a “glassbox” with bridges and platforms, where movements on all levels are visually connected.

Katuse struktuuri kujunemine. Pealtvaade

exhiBition Pavilion deSiGnthis project was developed during an intense one-week Grasshopper workshop. the assignment was to develop a clear concept for an exhibition pavilion and build it up parametrically in the program. the concept of the pavilion is a transformable “folding” rectangle, which unfolds itself when the exhibition is open and folds together when closed. the biggest challenge was to find a standpoint from where to start coding the movement and transformations of the flexible fabric parts. this was solved by defining one static part of the construction - one of the four “walls”. all the other construction revolves around the axis of this part and the transformations are calculated depending on the rotation angle.

the aim of this cource was to become familiar with digi-talising device and working with the data. the object of digitalising was a system of woolen strings, which were tied loose, then kept in a soapy water for some time and left to dry. in this way the woolen strings grouped into clusters and formed a new tructure in this way. after it was digitalised and deformed using rhinoceros program.

this project was also part of the digitalising cource. this time a balloon was deformed using tape sticks and digi-talised. after that the data was triangulated and a two-di-mensional map of the pieces was formed. it was printed out and folded into the triangulated shape. in this way the balloon shape was brought from reality to virtuality and back.

this project was focusing on the fractal structures and their qualitis. after a research on existing fractal systems and their codes and logics, we had to create our own fractal. Specific rules were invented and the parameters were given certain physical equivalents. in my project the two parameters were physically represented by 2 modules of folded paper. after they were assembled and glued together according to the rules of the system.

interior illumination

this indoor lightning was designed as a part of the plywood studio work. the specific character of plywood was used to create a light and dynamic form. the actual shape was in-fluenced by the london scyscraper by norman foster. the parts of the plywood lamp are not glued or screwed together, but are assembled using grooves and can be easily disas-sembled.

Street illumination

this project was created during the cource of studying microstation program. the for and the idea of this street lamp comes from the need to diffuse the light. in this way no glare is created to the tresspasser and an ambient and soft lightning is created.

Study triP

in autumn 2009 three students of our cource were selected to par-ticipate in the workshop “designing hospitality in urban landscape”, which took place in Berlin. the workshop was interdisciplinar and international: students from the departments of design and architecture from esonia and Ger-many worked together in mixed groups. Several aspects of lightning and shadows were investigated and an-alysed. the technical aspects as well as the menthal impact on the people was taken into consideration. as a result, several creative and innovative street design proposals were created and represented as scetches and visual ideas.

Smart Geometry

during my exchange studies in royal danish academy of fine arts, the SmartGeom-etry Workshop 2011 was held in Copenhagen. it was organised by a research centre Cita (Center for information technology and architecture), which has a strong col-laboration with the university and particularly with the department i was in. Students of my department were invited to assist the proffesstional clusters in their work. the cluster i participated in was called “authored Sensing” and its main focus was developing smart sensors for interpreting architectural space. So, the challenge was to design and build working prototypes of 3 smart sensors which could measure the “atmosphere of the space”.a big part of the work was connected with electronics and scripting. the most impor-tant tools used were: arduino microprocessor, different sensors, and programs like Wiring, Processing, Grasshopper and Pachube (an online database service).
