Reunion Note April 2016 Page 1 Here we are in 2016 preparing to undertake our Ninth Reunion since starting in 1986. This will be our thirtieth year of reunion events. This is also our first Reunion to be held within two years of each other as was voted in by the Membership during our 2014 Business Meeting. So let’s go ahead and break this down for you. REUNION 2016 will be taking place during September 9th, 10th and 11th as was originally voted on during our 2014 Business Meeting and acted on by the Board of Directors. Information to date is as follows; DATES: 1200 Hours Friday September 9th through 1600 Hours Sunday September 11th HOTEL: Best Western Merry Manor Inn 700 Main Street, South Portland, Maine 04106 Tel: 207-774-6151 Website: www.merrymanorinn.com The Merry Manor Inn has hosted a number of Coast Guard organizational reunions as well as our 2010 and 2014 Reunions, these events having been served well by the Inn and all it’s staff, making them very successful and enjoyed by our participants. It should be noted that our contact, Don Haggett Director of Sales, was responsible for the success of our first Reunion held at the Ramada Inn at Portland in 1986. The Merry Manor Inn will be our Headquarters Hotel and will facilitate all our major events. The Inn has blocking off approx. 40 rooms at a very competitive discounted room rate. Rates will be valid for a period preceding the Reunion weekend and following the event for those that come early or would like to extend their stay afterwards. The room rate is $109.85 per night plus an 8% State Tax. Reservations should be made directly with the hotel and should be made by August 10, 2016 to guarantee the prescribed rate. Indicate you are attending the Portland Maine Cutterman’s Reunion. Note: If you coming by other transportation means other than auto (e.g. air, train, bus) make sure you check with the hotel when registering as they offer gratis pick up by taxi, etc. at these locations to get you to the hotel and return you when you leave. The Merry Manor Inn has hosted a number of Coast Guard organizational reunions as well as our 2010 and

2014 Reunions, these events having been served well by the Inn and all it’s staff, making them very successful

and enjoyed by our participants. It should be noted that our contact, Don Haggett Director of Sales, was

responsible for the success of our first Reunion held at the Ramada Inn at Portland in 1986. The Merry Manor Inn

will be our Headquarters Hotel and will facilitate all our major events. The Inn has blocking off approx. 40 rooms

ITEMS OF NOTE TO THE MEMBERSHIP:

Duane Association Annual Reunion: This year the Duane Association will be joining us with their

Membership but also will be considering it their Annual Reunion Event as well. The Duane Association

will conduct their Annual Business Meeting as a separate part from the Cutterman’s and will be

participating fully in all our events. Many of the Duane Membership are Portland Maine Cutterman

Association Members and we have recently added more of their Membership to our rolls. Glad to have

them aboard to make this Reunion a further success.

Portland Maine Cutterman Association President Larry Roe Crosses the Bar:

On February 23, 2016 our beloved President Crossed the Bar while in Florida. Funeral Services were

held in Portland at Jones-Rich-Hutchins Funeral Home located at Woodford’s Corner. A good showing

of Cuttermen attended and participated in our final salute to our comrade in a brief ceremony of

recognizing Larry. A reading was performed by Member Izzy Keppner as well as a reading and the

funeral service was conducted by Member Bob Beane. Our sympathies were convey to Camie and

Larry’s Family. Larry you will be missed and you have our wishes for “Fair Winds and Calm

Following Seas Forever”.

The Annual Business Meeting of the Portland Maine Cutterman’s Association took place on August 8, 2015 at the Maine Military Museum located in South Portland, Maine with approximately 35 attendees. The Meeting commenced following an all hands luncheon at approx. 1330 hours. Minutes are as follows: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE TO THE FLAG

OPENING REMARKS – President Larry Roe made his

opening remarks to welcome the attendees to this 2015

Annual Business Meeting. Larry thanked Lee Humiston,

Curator of the Maine Military Museum, for the use of the

facility for this meeting. He further thanked the Officers

and Directors for maintaining and conducting required

business of the Association.

ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS: President Larry Roe, Vice President Bud Minott, Secretary Wes Splettstoesser Treasurer Ed Hardy Directors: John Janosik, Joe Mendoza, Arnie Chandler, Stan Frank, and Guy Linscott. Unable to Attend Archie Pelley (Director Emeritus),

PREVIOUS MINUTES of the AUGUST 2014 Reunion Meeting was presented by Secretary, Wes Splettstoesser and accepted by the Membership. REPORT ON THE TREASURY – Presented by the Treasurer, Ed Hardy. REPORT OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS – since the 2014 Reunion were report as follows: Four (4) total Meetings dated 9/6/14, 10/25/14, 5/16/15 and 7/11/15 were to conduct routine business of the Association, and to set up this 2015 Annual Business Meetings.

REPORT OF COMMITTEES: Membership Committee – Secretary Wes Splettstoesser reported that the Membership was in good shape with approx. 149 paid/life/indefinite Members. Recognized was one (1) New Life Member since 2014 Reunion, Barataria Sailor from South Berwick, Maine, Life Member Robert Gagne. Social Activities & Reunion Committee – President Larry Roe discussed the status of our upcoming Reunion for 2016 which will take place September 9th, 10th and 11th. The format for the reunion will be similar to our 2014 Reunion and will take place primarily at the Best Western Merry Manor Inn located at Main Street South Portland. The Sunday Picnic event will be held at Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport which also provides Oceanfront Camping. Nominations Committee – Director John Janosik’s term has expired requiring election for this three (3) year position. Placed into nomination were Members John Janosik (returning) and George Johns.

The Election: A count of Written and Proxy Ballots were made and Director John Janosik will be returning to his position for the next three years. Thanks George Johns for running.

Finance Committee – No Report. Articles & Bylaws Committee – No Report UNFINISHED BUSINESS – There was none pending. NEW BUSINESS: Honorary Membership Presentation was made to Lee Humiston, curator of the Maine Military Museum. It was noted that Lee has contributed to the promotion of the Cutterman and US Coast Guard within the museum through extensive displays of artifacts and donated items as well as providing freely the use of his facility by the Cutterman’s Association to conduct Annual Business Meetings. He is a strong supporter and in a presentation by President Larry Roe was provided with an indefinite Honorary Membership, and Cutterman items, particularly one of our baseball caps.

GOOD OF THE ORDER: New Member Robert Knowles – Introduced his new book “War On This Woman – Well Take This”. The book is available from Amazon or at leading bookstores. Stan Barnes, President of the Duane Association - Invited the Membership to the forthcoming Duane Association Reunion in Lancaster, PA on September 23rd to 27th. The Duane Association has Annual Reunions and can be viewed on their website. Member Bob Beane – Presented a program “Vet to Vet” sponsored by the Maine Veteran’s Association. The program pairs up volunteer veteran’s with home bound or institutionalized Vets for companionship situations. The Maine Veteran’s Association provides orientation classes for dealing with Vets in a 8 week program consisting of 3 each – 3hour classes. He noted that there are 83,000 Veteran’s in Maine with many needing such association.
