To learn and to do! — this is the soul's work here below. The

soul grows as truly as an oak grows. As the tree takes the carbon of the air, the

dew, the rain, and the light, and the food that the earth supplies to its roots, and by

its mysterious chemistry transmutes them into sap and fibre, into wood and leaf,

and flower and fruit, and color and perfume, so the soul imbibes knowledge and by

a divine alchemy changes what it learns into its own substance,

and grows from within outwardly with an inherent force and power like those that

lie hidden in the grain of wheat.

Brethren, Thank you for the honor of electing me to Master of Kadosh for Oregon Consistory #1. The office is an honor that much more deserving men have held before me and I thank them, and you, for the hard work that allows me to take this seat. Acknowledging the efforts of those past, present and future I will endeavor to do my best for the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.

Recently, I was asked to explain at least part of my journey since becoming a member of the Scottish Rite. Being a private man and not used to talking about such matters has given me pause and I will do my best to explain myself. There are many worthy reasons to be involved in this community. Here are just a few of the best parts of my time within the Rite.

First, I will let you in on a secret: finding fraternal acceptance among men who I normally would have no cause to socialize with has been an enlightenment. Thank you all. Of course, prior Blue Lodge experiences led me here but it is the depth of care and compassion the men in the Portland Valley have for our Degrees, ways, teachings and understandings conveyed that inspires much of my appreciation. I have a lot to learn and am glad to be part of such a great society.

Participation in Degree work here was, at first, quite a daunting task for me. Nervous, for having not acted in a production since childhood, this work was actually quite a bit more of a challenge than expected. I remember standing off stage with Brothers in costume, sweating and waiting nervously for the director to call us in front of the audience. What if I froze? Next thing, the now or never moment came and we went through the door. What an exhilarating anticipatory experience - I didn’t even have a line to give! Whoa, was I really going out there? I did have to show genuine feeling, but was told not to look at the audience and couldn’t really observe if it was good or bad. I held on to the director’s words and as I went out felt balanced and knightly. Being nervous, time on the stage seemed slow and then it was over. What a roller coaster, I guess you had to be there!? We received high praise later and being a small part of a great production felt pretty good. I was smiling. The next couple of Degrees we did became a little more intense. The number of lines given me grew as trust was built by everyone. The education I was receiving was beyond a doubt worth the commitment. These experiences were completely unexpected as acting on stage wasn’t something I saw coming at all, a new understanding of the five senses was also an elation. This acting stuff will open more than just your eyes. Learning the lines allowed me a different view of the Degrees: I was seeing the work from a completely new perspectives. The fraternal camaraderie of the stage is definitely well worth the effort of taking time to get involved.

Unexpectedly, the call to be part of sound management came last year and this also creates another sensational way to give a little back by keeping up the production from behind the scenes. Acting and now sound- what? I still have much to learn in these departments. We all know men who dedicate their lives to this stuff. Sound is the part of the production that goes along really well until a mistake is made and a new appreciation for the Brethren has come with this. This is a humbling experience for sure. No one wants to let down any Brothers who worked for countless hours toward perfecting their delivery. When everything goes well, the truth delivered by the actors seems much more discernible making suspension of disbelief increase. The flow state created can be marvelous for everyone present. A sublime beauty I have noticed are the fine efforts of the men who have been here in the past whose efforts and knowledge continue to be passed on.

The amazing Degrees we see in Portland come from many men’s efforts of over a hundred years in this building. We have a great ensembles on the stage and behind that the scenes around here and this place needs all our support.

Since taking the obligations at the Portland Valley I find new friendships starting and feel surrounded by Brothers who care about the liberal arts, strong moral characters, diligent work ethics, and preserving the culture created by great men of the past through the bonds of seeking universal truths. Working in the kitchen has taught me a few things too. Taking a chance on a new horizon, even a seemingly mundane one, has been a great way to learn about the mysteries. It is the sharing in and of our work that creates the fraternal unity and love that are the strengths of the Order. To be sure this is inspiring work and participation will continue.

I thank all the Brethren committed to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and especially the Portland Valley members who have given their talent, time and treasury toward the efforts to help men feel accepted, needed and loved!

Invites all Scottish Rite Members to attend the

Feast of the Manifesto of the Consistory June 4th, 2019

T he Officers of the Consistory invite the entire Valley to attend and celebrate with them at the Feast of the Manifesto. The Feast of the Manifesto is a celebration of the world changing declaration in 1801 that formed the Scottish Rite as we know it

today. It is considered by many Scottish Rite Masons to be the most important day in our history, for it was in 1801 that the Scottish Rite formally began as an organized Masonic body. The Feast Day of the Consistory is also known as the FEAST OF THE MANIFESTO of the Order, for it was in the 1802 Manifesto, called the “Circular throughout the two Hemispheres,” where May 31, 1801 was declared to be the formal establishment of the first Supreme Council in Charleston, South Carolina. This year we will celebrate the Feast on the 4th of June, at 7pm.

7th Degree Provost and Judge: Reflections on Justice

The laws of a moral society are there to protect man’s inalienable, God-given rights. If we are going to live in such a society and partake in all the qualities that it has to offer us then we to must also live within the laws governing such a society.

The administration of such laws is a very sacred duty and a commitment to such a just administration is the very foundation for a government of free people. Furthermore, those given the job of determining whether a just society’s

laws have been broken must act impartially, without prejudice, uprightly, with patients and charity.

I fully believe in the adage by Hermes from the Emerald Tablet, “What is above is like what is below, and what is below is like that which is above. To make the miracle of the one thing.” We are a reflection of God and the wrong done to another is a wrong done to us all and an affront to the nature of God. The laws and justice against such a wrongdoing are given to us by God in order to better live within the laws enacted by Him as the creator and legislator of the universe.

“Whoever sheds the blood of man by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.” (Genesis 9:6) The most obvious and grave injustice is the taking of the life of another human being. Given that we are a reflection of God, when the unjust murders another human being it is a murder of a creation that is most like God—and the most loved by God and is therefore an affront upon God Himself.

As a member of a just society it is our duty to at some point and time to do our civic duty as a juror or even as a witness to an injustice. In masonry we seek the most effective method of enforcing just laws and the prevention of wrong and or injustice. I believe that we find this justice in temperance between the egocentric and the altruistic. Just as an unjust man will find his ruin in a just society so to will the unjust government find itself when a corrupt hierarchy overseeing its administration.

Socrates contends, and I agree, that justice is the principal virtue of the human soul. Justice serves as one of the four columns of the cardinal virtues of mankind, (justice, prudence, temperance and fortitude) and is very closely linked to the practice of charity. Justice then connects the human experience with others regardless of status, color, creed, wealth or standing. Therefore, Justice is fundamental to virtue because it regulates our understanding of man and his reflection of the divine spirit of God.

    Portland’s Spring Reunion 2019

    My Dear Brethren,

If you weren’t able to attend Portland Valley’s Reunion, you missed one of the greatest reunions in a very long time. Congratulation to all the Stage crew, Wardrobe, Make- up, Lighting, Sound, Special effects,

K.S.A., Photographer, Servers, Class conductors, Portland’s administrators, and Cast members. Fantastic job my Brothers!

The stage crew was down to three people and they hit the mark every time. Working the stage, sound, lighting, make-up, and wardrobe is very hard work and you came through with flying colors. K.S.A. and others also work very hard without applause or admiration, I say to you, thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Now the cast members, who put their lives on hold to rehearse, learn their lines, work on blocking, and put their hearts and souls into the degrees. Thank you for a beautiful job well done. The old timers came through with their usual great performances. The excitement and performance was nothing short of being perfect! What I am very excited about are all the newer members who participated and helped in every way. Thank you!

Welcome to our newest members and I encourage all of you to get involved and experience what the Scottish Rite is all about.

Finally, I am so very proud of each of you for your fabulous work. This reunion reminded me of years pass when everyone worked very hard to impress upon the candidates the lessons of the Scottish Rite.

    God Bless you all!
