Summer has passed, fall is here and all is well at PYC.

I hope everyone had a great summer and that the amenities and activities at PYC have contributed to your enjoyment. Since we combined August and September and did not publish a separate September Port-light, I’d like to review some of the events and update the progress of our projects over the past couple of months.

Down River Cruise: After attending Bald Eagle Days in Cathlamet, some of us journeyed down river and anchored for two nights in Warren Slough near Knappa, followed by three days at the West End Mooring Basin in Astoria. We took several side trips by car: one to Seaside for the day and another to Long Beach, Wash-ington. Our trip to Long Beach was very informative as Mark Newsom was able to join us for several days. Mark, whose family has lived in the Long Beach area, provided us with some family history as well as a tour of his family’s properties which included a number of vin-tage cars. We had a great time and, as an extra special treat, each evening we enjoyed a bowl of ice cream with raspberries.

Labor Day Cruise was hosted by Floyd Jones and Bar-bara Thompson with the assistance of an ever-changing crew of helpers. I greatly appreciate the hard work of our hosts; it’s not only the planning and organizing, but the hours of work during the cruise that make these events successful. Everyone had a great time. The menu prepared by Paco and his staff was great as usual. Shirley Shen, assisted by Chris Finks, provided a special recipe with homemade ice cream. In addition to hosting the event, Floyd and Barbara also provided special liba-tions.

Club Regulations: A gentle reminder to all Club members that guests’ boats and motor homes are not permitted at the Outstation. Your guest may only accompany you on your boat or they can drive to the Outstation and visit with you.

Closed Moorage project: As most of you know, J-row is being replaced this year. I’m pleased to share that the new docks are in place. All that remains in this phase is to complete the electrical hook ups and drive new pil-ings, which is scheduled for the beginning of October.

Commodore’s CommentsBy Dave Simonson

Thanks to the expert leadership of our moorage con-struction team, replacing the old docks and installing new ones went without a hitch. From beginning to end it was a great effort by all. The docks were launched at Sundance Marina, towed upriver to PYC and stored there for a short time while the old docks were removed. Our construction team was led by Dick Dyer and Mike House along with PYC employees Nick Green and Jaron Yankovich. We appreciate the many volunteers who contributed many hours to this project. Frank Bocarde, moorage chairman, has listed all the names in his Moorage Update column of those who participated.

Open Moorage: In addition to upgrading J-Row, our plans for this year are to install a wave attenuator and upgrade A-row in the open moorage by year end. We are pressing on with these plans unless an unexpected development occurs.

Our Moorage Committee has been working for 1½ years with the City of Portland to obtain a permit. These procedures are very time-consuming and expensive. The City informed us August 23rd that its decision for our permit is favorable to PYC, but, as is customary, before they can actually issue the permit the decision must be posted for 14-days to allow anyone to file an appeal. On September 5th as the appeal period expired there was one protest filed. To resolve an appeal, a hearings officer is appointed to listen to the objections and make a ruling. The hearing has been set for October 2nd. While we are confident the ruling will be in our favor, we must keep in mind the permit process does allow for further appeals and/or continuances. Our current schedule given a favorable decision from the October hearing is to complete A-Row as planned. (If you want to attend the hearing, give me or Frank Bocarde a call for details.)

I hope everyone understands this situation. As Com-modore, on behalf of the Board, please be assured our Committee, along with our professional advisers, are all committed to completing this project.

Eaton Bar: The permits are in hand and the completion of this project should be November 1st or sooner. Bob Morgan and his crew have been working diligently towards completion.

An update from Greg Allison and Valerie Hettman: Since the last update in the August/September Portlight Valerie wants everyone to know that “she is thankful

Club manager reportBy Daniel Wilkins

The Portlight page 3 October 2017

The summer of 2017 was spe-cial with so many great events and cruises that created mem-

ories and friendships for a lifetime. From Bald Eagle Days in Cathlamet to the Car Show Cookout at the clubhouse to the Labor Day Cruise at Willow Bar, our events were very well attended with rave reviews by those who participated.

Fall brings more fun including a number of events in October: We will celebrate Oktoberfest on October 6th with German sausages, braised cabbage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and apple strudel. On October 21st we feature a traditional cookout and the Watercrafters Show and Sell event with an opportunity to buy hand-crafted arts and crafts created by our own members. And at the end of the month join us at the Willow Bar outstation for our annual Halloween cruise, complete with a costume contest.

Fall racing begins in October with the Robert A. Smith regatta on October 7th and 8th with post-race socials on both days including a Chili Feed on Sunday afternoon. The Sailing on Sunday races kick off the season October 15th and per usual, the Kelly Bar will be open for partic-ipants until 7pm.

We will continue to offer galley and bar services five days a week throughout the fall including lunch Wednesday through Saturday, brunch on Sunday, and dinner on Friday and Saturday (barring other events). In Sep-tember, Chef Paco launched a delicious new fall menu featuring a Chimichurri Steak Salad, Dungeness Mac and Cheese, Gamberi Carbonara and more. Come check out what you’ve been missing in our full service dining room and Kelly Bar.

Have you noticed how many new members that we have around the club this year? The membership committee has done a phenomenal job in recruiting and thus far we have added 27 memberships, or 43 individual members in 2017 at the time of this writing, and we plan to add a few more by year end. Help us continue our tremendous growth this year and refer a friend to PYC.

Planning a holiday party this year? Know anyone that is? PYC specializes in planning the perfect party in our beautiful clubhouse for groups up to 375 people. Ashley, our Events Coordinator, will make your party planning a piece of cake, and will help put on a party that is sure to impress your guests, employees or clients. Call today to reserve a date as prime December dates are going quickly.

Thank you for your support and membership. Cheers to a great summer boating season!

new member profilesBy Chris Finks, Membership Chair

What a great year 2017 has been as PYC continued its growth and new friendships. Through September, PYC has a total of 43

new members and that is a very good thing!

In October, we are recognizing six new members. Of course, all of us will continue to do our best to make new members feel welcome by making introductions and inviting them to join your group during events. Again remember, if you sponsored a new member, please make sure to reach out and show our “PYC hospitality” during some of their first events. All of us, but especially sponsors should remember to stay close to our new members, particularly throughout their first year as a member.

NANCY ANSBOURYNancy is a 35-year teaching tennis pro and Tennis Director at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Washington. She was born in Monterey, California and lived in Northern California before moving to Portland with her children 22 years ago. Nancy grew up water-

skiing on the lakes in California and besides tennis is an avid athlete with biking, golf, pickle ball and running. She has two adult children, Patrick and Sarah and two dogs, Grey and Goose. Shirley Shen and Chris Finks sponsored Nancy.

RiCHARD JONeSDick is retired from 30 years in fire service serving as Deputy Chief, Fire Marshall and arson investi-gator/police officer. He enjoys woodworking, boating, camping and fishing and is in the process of purchasing a 39-foot power boat. Dick has four adult children;

Carrie, Rick, Danielle, and Ryan. Dick was sponsored by Dennis Vaughn and Greg Chevalier.

ROBeRT MCCORkLe AND CHeRYL BOYDBob was born in Denver, Colorado then moved to Portland at age 5. He graduated from Oregon State University and entered into his first career in the US Marine Corps, living and working all over the United States and in Asia twice before coming back to Oregon to work for The Standard in late 2016. Bob is an experi-

enced and accomplished pilot. He has been active in competitive sailing, sailing instruction, sailed all over the Puget Sound and around Africa’s Cape Horn in a 40-ft ketch. Cheryl is involved with

the arts and enjoys acting, theater, singing and improv. They have two adult children. Kevin Driscoll and Tom Keffer sponsored Bob and Cheryl.

RANDALL VOgTRandy, an attorney, was born in Peoria, Illinois and lived in Cali-fornia before settling in Oregon in 1973. Randy is a BMW motorcycle enthusiast who enjoys riding, hiking and is an audiophile. He is active in the BMW Motorcycle Riders of Oregon, Pearl District Rotary Club and Meals on Wheels. Randy also enjoys being out on the water

sailing, kayaking and canoeing and is father to one adult child, Adam. Bob Martin and Peter Hirst sponsored Randy.

JeNNA RAe WiLSONJenna was born in South Korea and has lived in Camas, Wash-ington for 19 years. If her last name sounds familiar, it is because she is the daughter of PYC mem-bers Paul and Natalie Wilson. As you likely know, the Wilsons own Sell’s Marine Service, a PYC fix-

ture for several decades. Jenna Rae has been around boats since she could walk and at the young age of 20 is following in her father’s footsteps in the marine business and working at Sell’s as Office Manager. Paul Wilson and Tammy House sponsored Jenna Rae.

SCOTT AND CHeRYL ZUViCHScott is a native Oregonian who was raised in Cottage Grove and graduated from the University of Oregon before making Vancouver, Washington home for the past 27 years. He is in the banking profes-sion. The Zuvichs enjoy boating,

Entertainment Committee ReportBy Ruth Parr

After spending the summer boating and on other activities, your entertainment committee has come back together to plan the many events that

will take place during the holiday season. Even though we’re barely into autumn, it’s time to consider the Hol-iday Ladies’ Dinner and the Children’s Christmas Party, to name just two of the many events during the holidays.

Decorations must be chosen and menus must be planned. Stay tuned for further developments!

LAST DAY FOR OLD SALT AND YOUNG CREW—Dirk Winters, showing the effects of 13 ½ years of sailing the globe, pauses for a snap-shot with 24-year-old crew Nick Wells as they near their destination in Victoria, B.C.

The Portlight page 6 October 2017

Dirk Winters’ Crewman Visits PYC 32 years laterBy Bill Chevalier

A young adventurer who had never sailed before yet signed on as crew aboard Dirk Winters’ 40 foot wooden ketch WINDJOB, helped sail the

tired old boat from Honolulu to Victoria, B.C. 32 years ago. In July, Nick Wells and his wife Lucy stopped by PYC for lunch and a chance to bring back old memories of cruising with the club’s first circumnavigator.

They were guests of members from the committee that had turned an old forgotten manuscript into an Amazon Kindle e-book called CRUISIN BOOZIN SNOOZIN. The book was written by Winters at the conclusion of his 13-year voyage when he clocked the globe one-and-a-half times.

Wells, born in England and living in Australia, was 25 years old and at loose ends in Honolulu when he learned Winters was looking for two crew to make the trip to Victoria. Wells said he knew nothing about sailing when they left Hawaii, but had to learn quickly from Winters who he said knew everything about sailing, sailboats and endless repairs at sea.

Winters had been in Fiji after completing his circum-navigation when he got word of an upcoming party of his PYC cronies at a cabin owned by Jack Berglund at Quartz Bay on Cortes Island in Desolation Sound, B.C. (Berglund had sold WINDJOB to Winters earlier). Never wanting to miss a good party, Winters set sail on the 7,000 mile trip from Fiji to British Columbia and was in Honolulu when he met Wells and hired him for crew.

In the book, Dirk Winters gave Wells good marks for his work aboard WINDJOB, but was disappointed when Wells left the boat in Victoria instead of con-tinuing on to Quartz Bay. Wells said he too was disap-pointed.

“The trip from Honolulu to Victoria had taken longer than planned and, after I’d paid Dirk for my time on board, I was down to my last

few dollars,” Wells said. “I was also exhausted, nursing a cracked rib and couldn’t really afford the extra time in Victoria needed for repairs. Although I did fix a masthead halyard and a leaky inflatable before I left the boat.”

Winters wrote in the book that the 7-day rendezvous of the Lying and Drinking Society at Quartz Bay had 14 boats and 60 people in attendance.

On hand for the luncheon were PYC Historian Walter Witschard, Bill Chevalier who edited the book, Nancy MacGregor who researched photos, Connie Gazow who scanned the 700+ pages of typewritten manuscript and Bill Stevens who worked with Dirk Winters’ daughter on copyright matters. Comparing notes about Winters with Nick Wells was

CRYA REPORTKen Kudrna, PYC Delegate to CRYA

The third annual Columbia River Yachting Association Golf Tournament teed off on September 16th at the Wildwood Golf course

under smoky skies but overall great weather. PYC was represented by two teams led by Dave Simonson and Mark McCuddy.

Many thanks go to Ron Mauselle (Inflatable Boat Center) for his hole in one prize backing and a great door prize from Dennis Vaughn (Bob’s Red Mill). Other sponsoring PYC members were Sells Marine, Vercoe Yacht Sales, McCuddy’s Marine, Neil Kelly, The Boat Yard at Rocky Pointe, Schooner Creek Boat Works, PYC, and Mike House’s memorial to both his father Erv House and Jim Schwitter who were both huge supporters of CRYA during their lifetime. In great style, PYC catered a Chicken BBQ lunch for this event. I am sad to report that the winning team was not from PYC, but there is always next year.

Many thanks to all those mentioned and not men-tioned that supported this fund raiser this year and prior years as well.

Moorage Upgrade ReportBy Frank Bocarde

As you are aware, the new J row floats were installed in August. This was one of the smoothest instal-lations I have been involved with as we launched the floats on Monday morning, August 14th at Sun-dance Marine and had all the floats staged at PYC by 3:00 in the afternoon. By Friday afternoon we

had all 371 feet of new dock in place and by Saturday the 19th at noon we had all the boat houses secured to the new dock. Mike House and friends have installed the water supply and fire systems (and had them inspected). By mid-October the new pilings will be in place and Nick and Jaron will be finishing up the details (walkway railing, etc.). What a difference a new walk makes.

None of this is possible without an army of volunteers and once again PYC came through (See photo below of many of the volunteers). Upgrade co-chairs Don Etter and I would like to thank everyone for their superb efforts. Mike House, Dick Dyer, Bob Martin, Jay Densem, Dave Stuckey, Gil MacGregor, Jim Sinclair, Thomas McMenemy, Rod Wells, Scott Brattebo, John Fettig, John Colby, Mike Quigley, Larry Cirotski, Floyd Jones, Gordy Lusk, Dennis Derby, Bob Dubay, Gary Eckert, Mike McNaughton, Bob Hansen, Jim Hansen, Harry Braunstein, Bob Morgan, Dave Simonson and Paul Akin (please forgive me if I missed anyone). Our own Nick Green, Jaron Yankovich and Daniel Wilkins were great, from the initial prep, to float movement, installation and support: we are lucky to have these folks as our partners.

While the J row installation was a “home run,” we are still waiting on “third base” for the City of Portland to provide our permit for BW and A rows. The City has ruled in our favor in their Environmental Zone Review (necessary for the building permit), but during the fourteen-day public comment period they received one appeal. The appeal will be heard on October 2nd and will require a ruling and then potential additional time to listen to further arguments. Hopefully this will all go our way and we will continue to move forward this year to complete these projects. If not, we will work on completing them in 2018. (If you want to attend the hearing, give me or Dave Simonson a call for details.)

With summer over, fall racing is upon us.By Mary Stainsby, PYC Sailing Co-CaptainS/V Kermit

It’s certainly been a great summer for racing. I’ve always considered myself to be really lucky if I found a warm sunny afternoon or evening with

enough wind to make sailing fun, and we’ve had an incredible number of those days this year. I think there were only one or maybe two of the evening races this spring and summer where the race had to be canceled due to lack of wind, and that seldom happens.

That said, we did have to cancel the PYC Commodores’ Race in August due to lack of registrants, but it turned out to be one of those weekends where the temperatures were predicted to be right around 100 degrees, so can-celing it was probably for the best anyway.

The SYSCO Race/Cruise from Kelly Point to the City Dock in St. Helens on the last weekend in August set records for the fastest finishes ever for the event: the Melges’ finished in less than 2 hours, and all 21 boats were finished in less than 2.5 hours. The smoke from The Gorge was bad, but the wind was great. Unfortu-nately, SYSCO apparently doesn’t post their results for this, so I don’t know how the PYC boats did, but there were a few of our boats in the race.

The Rose City Long Distance Race (from Kelly Point to St. Helens on Saturday and back to Kelly Point on Sunday) was held Sept. 8-9, and again, it was a great race. While it took about 5 hours for the boats to get to St. Helens, the trip back on Sunday was better, though there were a couple of problems around the area of the Red-and-Green buoy just north of Sand Island. One person wound up in the water and was fortunately picked up by a Cal 20 (I don’t know if that was the boat they started out on or not), and another Cal 20 (whose name I won’t mention….) had a really bad spinnaker wrap (the last I heard, they were going to have to sail back to Portland with it that way!).

Of the PYC boats entered Anam Cara corrected out in 4th place in the PHRF A Division, Lolita was 2nd in the same division, Junkyard Dog corrected out first in the

PHRF B Division, while Mirage took 8th in B Division and Kind of a Big Deal took 9th. 3 Stooges tied for 2nd in the Cal 20 Fleet.

Overall standings for PHRF racing for PYC boats were 2nd for Junkyard Dog, Lolita 5th, Anam Cara 12th, Mirage 13th and Kind of a Big Deal 15th.

By the time you read this, PYC’s Fall Regatta will be over, and the Robert A. Smith Regatta will be coming right up (October 7-8). This will be the last regular racing for the 2017 season and there is still time to enter, so if you haven’t yet done so, please go to www.sailpdx.org and register right away. We will be hosting the racers in the bar following the racing on Saturday and Sunday, and will be serving a buffet dinner following the racing on Sunday. As always, the racers love to come in, have a few drinks and food with friends, and brag and/or cry about how they did on the races. Please plan to join us for a rowdy fun time!

The annual OCSA Tropical Party is also coming up soon. They have shifted the date by a couple of weeks, so it will be at 6:00 PM on Saturday, November 4th this year. With all the racing this year – including a few new events! – there will be a lot of trophies to hand out, and this is always a great party. I hope you will plan to attend! As with entering a race, to register for the party, go to www.sailpdx.org, use the pulldown menu titled “Racing” and select “Event Notice Board & Registra-tion”. Scroll down to the OCSA Tropical Party and sign up.

I want to give a shout-out to all my PYC co-captains, including Jack Becker, Michelle Bennett, Cherri Eudaly, Fred Hazzard, Nancy MacGregor, Bob Martin, Pam Sesar and Mike Stainsby.

That’s all I have for this month, so I’ll sign off for now and look forward to seeing you around the club.
