1LES EXPOSITIONS VIGNOBLE INVITÉ

Chaque année, la Fondation pour la culture et les civilisations du vin offre à un territoire viticole (région ou pays) la possibilité de présenter une exposition culturelle dans ses espaces pendant une durée de trois mois.

L’objectif des expositions « Vignoble invité » est de faire découvrir au public un vignoble sous un angle culturel et civilisationnel, et de mettre à l’honneur son territoire viticole, par une proposition originale et esthétique.

Ces expositions proposent la présentation d’objets patrimoniaux authentiques (œuvres d’art, objets) et invitent le public à être participatif et actif. Les approches choisies peuvent être l’immersion, la mise en situation ou la rencontre pour amener les publics à une découverte riche.

GUEST WINE REGION EXHIBITIONS

Each year, the Fondation pour la culture et les civilisations du vin gives a wine region or country the chance to present a cultural exhibition in its halls for a period of three months.

The aim of the Guest Wine Region exhibitions is to let the public dis-cover a vineyard from the angle of culture and civilisation, and to highlight its wine region through an original and aesthetic offering.

These exhibitions present authen-tic heritage items (works of art, objects) and encourage the public to participate and be active. The chosen approaches can use im-mersion, situations or encounters, to allow the public to make rich discoveries.

De plus, la Fondation met en place une programma-tion culturelle autour de l’exposition, en partenariat avec le vignoble partenaire : conférences, spectacles, ateliers de dégustation, soirées, films.

En 2017, la Géorgie, l'un des plus anciens pays viticole du monde, a été le premier Vignoble Invité. Cette exposition archéologique coorganisée avec l’Etat géorgien et le musée national de Tbilissi a connu un grand succès : plus de 50 000 visiteurs ont découvert la richesse historique et la qualité du patrimoine de ce pays.

Cette année, c’est la Ville de Porto qui a répondu à l’invitation de La Cité du vin en proposant une expo-sition valorisant son paysage viticole : Douro, l'air de la terre au bord des eaux.

L’accès à l’exposition est compris dans le billet d’en-trée à La Cité du Vin.

In addition, the Fondation puts in place a cultural programme a r o u n d t h e e x h i b i t i o n , i n partnership with the guest wine region: conferences, shows, tas-ting workshops, evening events, films.

Georgia, as the oldest wine region in the world, was the first Guest Wine Region in 2017. This archaeo-logical exhibition jointly organised with the Georgian state and the national museum of Tbilisi was a great success: more than 50 000 visitors discovered the historical richness and quality of the heri-tage of this country.

This year it is the city of Porto that has responded to the invitation from La Cité du Vin by offering an exhibition highlighting its winema-king region: “Douro: an alchemy between air, land and river ”.

Access to the exhibition is in-cluded in the entrance ticket for La Cité du Vin.

Douro : l'air de la terre au bord des eauxLe fleuve Douro traverse le Portugal d'est en ouest sur près de 200 km. Il parcourt ainsi la région qui porte son nom, au nord-est du Portugal jusqu’à l'Atlantique où il se jette dans l'océan à Porto.

C'est sur les terres du bassin du Douro, exploitées depuis l'Antiquité, qu'est né le Porto. 26 000 hectares de vignobles s'étendent sur ces rives escarpées.

Ce territoire viticole, entouré de montagnes, consti-tue un écosystème unique, façonné par les mains de l'homme, en terrasses, sur les pentes abruptes des rives du fleuve et participe à la singularité et à la beauté du paysage.

“Douro: an alchemy between air, land and river ”

The river Douro crosses Portugal from east to west over nearly 200 km. It crosses the region that bears its name, in the north-east of Portu-gal up to the Atlantic where it flows into the ocean at Porto.

It is on these lands of the Douro val-ley, farmed since Antiquity, that Port is born. 26 000 hectares of vineyards are planted on its steep banks.

This viticultural region, surrounded by mountains, is a unique ecosys-tem, shaped by the hands of man into terraces on the steep slopes of the river banks, and contribu-ting to the singular beauty of the landscape.

La région viticole du Haut-Douro est inscrite depuis 2001 au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco pour son paysage culturel exceptionnel, reflet de l'évolution de l'activité viticole et humaine au fil du temps ainsi que son évolution technique, sociale et économique.

Scellée par un décret-loi de 1756, l'appellation d'ori-gine qui délimite ce territoire, est une des plus an-ciennes appellations d'origine contrôlée au monde.

Le Douro a ainsi joué un rôle important dans le développement de la région. Jusqu'à l’avènement du transport routier, il fut longtemps la voie essen-tielle de communication qui assurait le transport du Porto, des collines du Haut-Douro vers la ville de Porto, le port exportateur.

À travers une approche sensible et pluridiscipli-naire, l'exposition cherche à présenter les scintil-lations contemporaines d'un patrimoine paysager qui met l'accent sur la relation ancestrale entre l'homme et la nature.

The Upper Douro wine region has been inscribed as a cultural lands-cape in the UNESCO World Heri-tage List since 2001, a reflection of the evolution of wine and hu-man activity over time as well as its technical, social and economic development.

Sealed by a royal charter in 1756, the appellation that delimits this region is one of the world's oldest protected designations of origin.

The Douro has thus played a ma-jor role in the development of the region. Until the advent of road transport, it was long the essential communication route that ensured transport of Port, from the hills of the Upper Douro to the city of Porto, from where it was exported.

Through a sensitive and multidis-ciplinary approach, the exhibition seeks to present the contempora-ry sparkle of a landscape heritage that emphasises the ancestral rela-tionship between man and nature.

COMMISSARIAT GÉNÉRAL

Nuno FariaNé à Lisbonne en 1971, Nuno Faria est l'actuel direc-teur artistique du CIAJG - Centro Internacional das Artes de José de Guimarães. De 1997 à 2003 et de 2003 à 2009, il a respectivement travaillé à l'Institut d'art contemporain et à la Fondation Calouste Gul-benkian. Il a vécu et travaillé en Algarve entre 2007 et 2012, où il a notamment fondé (à Loulé, en 2009) le projet Mobilehome, une École d'art nomade, expé-rimentale et indépendante. Il est professeur à l'ESAD, l’École des Arts et du Design de Caldas da Rainha.

Églantina MonteiroEglantina Monteiro est anthropologue, militante, vit et travaille à Castro Marim où elle dirige la Compagnie des Cultures. Entre 1984 et 2000, elle a été professeur d'anthropologie d'Art à la Faculté des Beaux-Arts de Porto. Eglantina Monteiro développe son activité dans le domaine de l'anthropologie d'art avec des travaux effectués en Amazonie, Bijagós, Guiné Bissau et Serra do Caldeirão, Algarve.

GENERAL CURATION

NUNO FARIA

Born in Lisbon in 1971, Nuno Faria is currently artistic director of CIAJG - Centro Internacional das Artes de José de Guimarães. From 1997 to 2003 and from 2003 to 2009 respectively, he worked at the contemporary art institute and the Calouste Gulbenkian Founda-tion. He lived and worked in the Algarve between 2007 and 2012, where he notably founded (at Loulé, in 2009) the Mobilehome project, a nomadic, experimental and independent art school. He teaches at ESAD, the Caldas da Rainha school of arts and design.

EGLANTINA MONTEIRO

Eglantina Monteiro, an anthro-pologist and activist, lives and works in Castro Marim where she runs the Companhia das Cultu-ras. Between 1984 and 2000, she taught anthropology of art at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto. Eglantina Monteiro continues her activity in the field of anthropology of art with work undertaken in the Amazon, Bijagós, Guinea Bissau and Serra do Caldeirão, Algarve.

La scénographie de cette exposition qui mêle par-cours sonore et installations artistiques est réalisée par Bartira Ghoubar, architecte brésilienne diplômée de l'Université Mackenzie à São Paulo.

À partir de 2004, Bartira Ghoubar développe des projets d'architecture et de scénographie en colla-boration avec des artistes et des commissaires d'art. Elle a notamment travaillé entre 2004 et 2006 en tant qu’architecte collaboratrice de Pedro Mendes da Rocha au sein du cabinet d'architecture Arte 3 (expositions : Mirabolante Miró [2005-2006] et Antoni Tàpies [2005] ; Chico Buarque, - Le Temps et L'Artiste [2005] et la VIe Biennale internationale D'architecture et du Design de São Paulo [2005]).

De 2007 à 2013, au Centre Culturel São Paulo (CCSP), Bartira Ghoubar prend en charge aussi bien l'élabo-ration et la conception d’installations et mobiliers pour les activités éducatives, que des projets d'expo-sitions d'architecture, et d´arts visuels. Depuis 2013, Bartira Ghoubar travaille de manière autonome et indépendante.

Depuis qu’elle vit dans la ville de Porto, elle déploie l’exposition itinérante de la Biennale D'Art Naïf du Brésil (2016-2017) et Evidences, exposition commé-morative des 30 ans de la même Biennale, au SESC Piraciba, et plus tard, au SESC Belenzinho, à São Paulo.

The staging of this exhibition has been created by Bartira Ghoubar, Brazilian architect and graduate of Mackenzie Presbyterian Uni-versity in São Paulo.

Since 2004, Bartira Ghoubar has been developing architectural and staging projects in collaboration with artists and art curators. In particular, between 2004 and 2006 she worked as collaborating archi-tect with Pedro Mendes da Rocha at the architectural practice Arte 3 (exhibitions: Mirabolante Miró [2005-2006] and Antoni Tàpies [2005]; Chico Buarque, - Tempo e Artista [2005] and the VIe Inter-national Architecture and Design Biennial in São Paulo [2005]).

From 2007 to 2013, at the São Pau-lo Cultural Centre (CCSP), Bartira Ghoubar was in charge of the de-velopment and design of installa-tions and furniture for educational activities, as well as architectural and visual arts exhibition projects. Since 2013, Bartira Ghoubar has been working independently.

Since coming to live in the city of Porto, she has presented the Bra-zil Naive Art Biennial (2016-2017) and Evidences, an exhibition to commemorate 30 years of the same Biennial, at SESC Piraciba and, later, at SESC Belenzinho in São Paulo.

À travers ce parcours, Nuno Faria et Eglantina Monteiro souhaitent exprimer les tensions sociales et politiques qui se cristallisent sur un même territoire : entre le Douro, viticole et rural, qui produit aussi du vin tranquille, et Porto, ville de négoce où transite le « vin de porto » également produit dans le Douro.

« Douro est le nom d'un fleuve devenu également le nom d’une région. Ce sont près de 100 km où le Dou-ro est l’eau et la terre. Une véritable rencontre entre l’eau, la roche, la nature, les animaux et les hommes où tout est démesuré : la vallée profonde et serrée, la température brûlante, la réverbération du schiste brillant et les terrasses en escalier que les hommes ont créées sur les pentes. Car ce sont les vignes qui ont été la motivation pour défricher ces pentes raides. La jonction de tous ces éléments atteint ici un point d’équilibre d’où naît une forme de vie végétale irremplaçable, que la fermentation transforme en vin. Lorsque les nobles et les bourgeois britanniques se sont aperçus de la puissance de ces vins riches en alcool, parfumés, lumineux, forts et contras-tés comme le paysage où ils sont nés, ils ont fait du Douro l’une de leurs premières exploitations «coloniales». En raison de la grande valeur com-merciale du vin de Porto, une société différente de celle des villes marchandes s’est développée dans la vallée du Douro. À l’aide de la navigation fluviale (depuis le Moyen-Âge) et désormais grâce aux nouveaux moyens de communication, le Dou-ro est lié aux villes riveraines mais aussi au Brésil, à l’Angleterre ou aux Pays-Bas», confie Eglantina Monteiro, commissaire de l’exposition.

UNE APPROCHE RÉSOLUMENT CONTEMPORAINEA CONTEMPORARY APPROACH

4Plus qu’une démarche didactique, l’exposition pro-pose une approche sensible et sonore qui mise au-tant sur la durée que sur l’espace.

«Le projet d’exposition que nous avons préparé peut être compris comme une composition ; il s’agit d’une exposition qui a une durée, un temps de visite minimum. Elle articule, fait cohabiter des sons anciens et contemporains, témoignages enten-dus, voix de l’au-delà et visions du passé projetés dans le présent. C’est, dans sa version aérienne, un paysage sonore.» déclare Nuno Faria, commissaire de l’exposition.

La scénographie est marquée par un espace très ouvert dans lequel sont présentées des installations contemporaines mais aussi de grandes images proje-tées, au sein d’une ambiance assez sombre soulignée d’un éclairage soigné.

« Nous avons invité l’atelier d’architecture Skrei, ins-tallé à Porto et l’œnologue et producteur Mateus Ni-colau de Almeida, qui développent une collaboration continue et fructueuse dans la région du Douro, à Vila Nova de Foz Côa, autour de la création de lieux de culte du vin. Ensemble, nous offrons un panorama, une enquête sur les secrets de la région, dans la-quelle dialoguent la connaissance du passé et l’expé-rimentation, sous la tradition des moines cisterciens. L’exposition est donc une (é)vocation animiste de la région, qui convoque la voix des hommes, le chant des oiseaux, le son métallique du schiste, le cours des eaux et le souffle du vent. » conclut Nuno Faria.

Throughout this journey, Nuno Faria and Eglantina Monteiro seek to express the social and political tensions that crystallize on the same territory: between the viti-cultural and rural Douro, which also produces dry wine, and Porto, the trading city which is the transit point for Port Wine, also produced in the Douro.

“The Douro is the name of a river that has also become the name of a region. Over nearly 100 km, the Douro is both water and land. A real meeting of water, rock, nature, animals and men where everything is disproportionate: the deep and narrow valley, the burning temperature, the reverbe-ration of the shiny schist and the stepped terraces that men have created on the slopes. For it was vines that gave the motivation to clear these steep slopes. All these elements come together here to reach a point of equilibrium, from which is born an irreplaceable form of plant life, transformed into wine by fermentation. When the British nobility and bourgeois saw the power of these wines, rich in alcohol, scented, bright, strong and contrasted with the landscape where they were born, they made the Douro one of their first “colo-nial” farms. Due to the important commercial value of Port Wine, society in the Douro Valley has developed in a different way than in trading towns. With the help of river navigation (since the Middle Ages) and now thanks to new means of communication, the Douro is linked to riverside towns but also to Brazil, England and the Netherlands,” says Eglantina Monteiro, exhibition curator.

Going beyond mere education, the exhibition offers a sensitive and so-norous approach that focuses on time and on space.

“The exhibition we have prepared can be thought of as a composi-tion; it is an exhibition with a dura-tion, a minimum visit time. It brings together old and contemporary sounds, spoken accounts, voices of the hereafter and visions of the past projected in the present. In its ethereal version, it is a sounds-cape.” says Nuno Faria, exhibition curator.

The staging is marked by a very open space in which contempo-rary installations are presented, but also large projected images, in a rather dark atmosphere with carefully controlled lighting.

“ We invited the Skrei architectu-ral practice, based in Porto, and winemaker and producer Mateus Nicolau de Almeida, who have de-veloped an ongoing and fruitful collaboration in the Douro region, in Vila Nova de Foz Côa, around the creation of cult wine locations. Together, we offer a panorama, this quest for the secrets of the re-gion, in which, there is a dialogue between knowledge of the past and experimentation, in the tradi-tion of the Cistercian monks. The exhibition is thus an animist evo-cation of the region, summoning men's voices, birdsong, the metal-lic sound of the schist, the course of the waters and the breath of the wind,” Nuno Faria concludes.

POURQUOI SOUTENIR L’EXPOSITION ?

Exploitée par la Fondation pour la culture et les civili-sations du vin, reconnue d’utilité publique, La Cité du Vin s’appuie uniquement sur ses recettes propres, ainsi que sur les dons privés issus du mécénat. Le soutien des entreprises et des particuliers joue ainsi un rôle central dans le modèle économique de La Cité du Vin.

L’exposition contribue directement aux missions de la Fondation telles que le soutien à la conservation et la valorisation du patrimoine culturel, universel et vivant qu’est le vin.

Grâce à leurs dons dédiés à l’exposition, les entre-prises mécènes permettent à la Fondation pour la culture et les civilisations du vin de :

• Faire rayonner l’exposition en contribuant au fi-nancement du plan média autour de l’exposition ;

• Développer une programmation culturelle riche au-tour de l’exposition, incluant conférences, spectacles, films, ateliers de dégustation et visites guidées ;

• Faire bénéficier les visiteurs de billets d’entrée gra-tuits pour l’exposition dès lors qu’ils achètent un billet pour le parcours permanent.

Managed by the ‘Fondation pour la culture et les civilisations du vin’, an officially recognised non-profit organisation, La Cité du Vin relies solely on its own revenues and private donations from patrons. Thus, individuals and companies who support La Cité du Vin play a key role in keeping the site running.

The exhibition is in keeping with the Foundation’s mission to support the conservation and development of the cultural, universal and living heritage of wine.

Thanks to the donations for the exhibition, the Corporate Patrons enable the ‘Fondation pour la culture et les civilisations du vin’ to:

• Spread the word about the exhibition by contributing financially to the exhibition’s media plan;

• Develop a rich cultural programme related to the exhibition, including conferences, shows, films, wine-tasting workshops and guided tours;

• Offer the visitors free tickets to the exhibition, when they purchase a ticket for the permanent tour.

Située à Bordeaux, La Cité du Vin est un équipement culturel unique au monde, où s’exprime l’âme du vin, à travers une approche immersive et senso-rielle, au coeur d’une architecture évocatrice. La Cité du Vin donne à voir le vin autrement, à travers le monde, à travers les âges, dans toutes les cultures et toutes les civilisations. Lieu de vie, lieu de sortie, lieu de découverte, La Cité du Vin invite au voyage dans un monde de cultures.

L’architecture et la scénographie de La Cité du Vin sont le fruit d’une étroite collaboration entre l’agence parisienne d’architecture XTU architects et l’agence anglaise de scénographie Casson Mann. Le bâtiment et sa scénographie incarnent une audacieuse et poétique traduction de l’âme du vin, de son patri-moine immatériel, de technologies numériques et immersives.

Located in Bordeaux, La Cité du Vin is a unique cultural facility dedicated to the universal, living heritage of wine. It offers a spec-tacular journey around the wor-ld, throughout the ages across countless cultures and civilisations. La Cité du Vin has become an es-sential feature in the Bordeaux tourist circuit, but is also a lively social venue for the inhabitants of Bordeaux and its surrounding area. La Cité du Vin is a place to see, visit and experience.

The architecture and scenic design of La Cité du Vin are the fruit of a close partnership between two firms: Parisian architects XTU and English museum design experts Casson Mann. Their project com-bines a bold, poetic interpretation of the spirit and intangible cultural power of wine, with a raft of im-mersive digital technologies.

Le Parcours permanent immersif et sensoriel s’étend sur 3 000 m² et comprend 19 espaces thématiques pour la plupart interactifs à parcourir librement, sans impératif de sens de visite. Au 8e étage de La Cité du Vin, le Belvédère culmine à 35 mètres. Point d’orgue de la visite, il invite à découvrir la cité girondine et ses alentours en dégustant un verre de vin du monde.

En plus de cette visite, les visiteurs peuvent profiter des ateliers œnoculturels pour s’initier à l’art de la dégustation avec une approche culturelle, ou un voyage à travers les terroirs et les savoir-faire du monde dans l’Espace polysensoriel pour mettre en éveil les cinq sens. Richesse de l'offre culturelle de La Cité du Vin, deux grandes expositions temporaires sont proposées par an.

Carrefour culturel, La Cité du Vin propose toute l'année une programmation culturelle variée : ren-contres et débats, spectacles et festivités, week-ends thématiques, projections, et colloques.

At the heart of the visitor expe-rience and the identity of La Cité du Vin, the immersive, multisenso-ry permanent tour occupies some 3,000 m² and features 19 different themed spaces, the majority of which are interactive. Visitors are free to wander around the exhibi-tion space as they see fit, with no fixed, compulsory route. Located on the eighth floor of La Cité du Vin, the belvedere is perched at a height of 35 meters. The culmi-nation of a visit to the permanent tour, it invites visitors to discover the Gironde city and surrounding area with a 360° perspective and taste a glass of wine from the very best wine regions of the world.

In addition to this tour, visitors can take advantage of wine culture workshops to learn about the art of tasting with a cultural approach, or a journey through the terroirs and know-how of the world in the multi-sensory area to awaken the five senses. A true cultural facility, La Cité du Vin offers two major temporary exhibitions per year as well as a varied cultural programme. Encounters and de-bates, shows and festivities, terroir weekends, screenings, and collo-quia, La Cité du Vin is the cultural crossroads of the city of Bordeaux.

A venue open to all, La Cité du Vin offers numerous public areas hosting life and exchange. Visitors can discover the building, take ad-vantage of the landscaped garden next to the Garonne, have a bite to eat, head to La Boutique, or spend a while in the reading room peru-sing the various books and multi-media items for reference use.

La Cité du Vin is run by the Foun-dation for Wine Culture and Civili-sations. An accredited charitable organisation since December 2014, the primary purpose of the Foundation for Wine Culture and Civilisations is to protect, celebrate and transmit the cultural, historic and intellectual dimensions of wine. The Foundation depends entirely on takings from La Cité du Vin and patronage donations, which thus play a crucial role in the economic model.
