Portraits Although pictures of objects and landscapes can be very interesting, it seems that we are more often drawn to photographs of people. A really good photograph of a person can tell an entire story with just one image. How to take a good photograph of a person: 1. Make sure that your camera is set on the “Portrait” feature (the little picture of a person’s profile). OR, really understand how to manually set your camera using the P, S, M, and A settings. 2. Focus in tight and crop the image right around the person’s face so that the background gets a little blurry (the portrait mode on the camera will help make the background blurry as well). 3. Use your flash (even if the flash doesn’t open on its own because it is so sunny outside, make it open). 4. Go outside! Indoor lighting does not enhance the human face or skin tone. 5. Don’t be afraid to use a vertical format. The difference between a great portrait and just a snap snot is the use physical use of the camera. Vertical images that include people are more captivating than horizontal snap shots of peoples’ faces. Being able to take a good picture of a person will employ you for the rest of your life at family reunions, sporting events and holidays. Standards: 1. Creative expression through production. 2. Aesthetic perception. 3. Historical and cultural context. 4. Applications to life. Objective: To create a series of 3 portraits that either tell a story or emote a human emotion. Requirements: 1. The three portraits need to use the rule of thirds. 2. The three portraits need to have a depth of field. 3. The three portraits either need to tell a story (either individually or as a group) OR emote a human emotion (either individually or as a group). 4. The three portraits can either be in color, black and white or sepia.
