USCG Vessel Examination

Even if you pay careful attention to safety, dan-gerous mechanical problems can crop up on the best-maintained boat. That’s why the U.S Coast Guard recommends that all recreational boaters (including personal watercraft users) take advantage of the free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program every year.

VSCs are offered by experienced members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons, two of the nation’s premier volunteer boating safety organizations. A VSC is your best way of learning about prob-lems that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the water.

Sarah Bremer, United States Coast Guard Aux-iliary Flotilla 53 and PAC member, will be glad to provide you with a courtesy inspection. Call Sarah on 397-3659, and she will set up an appointment to come to you and provide a free USCG Vessel Safety Check.

2019 PAC Membership

2019 PAC Membership dues were due on January 1st. Remember, to participate in club tournaments and be eligible for club awards, your dues must be paid before you go fishing. The cost of a family membership is only $30 and includes all household members under 18. Single memberships are only $20. New members may join now thru the end of 2019 for 1/2 price. PAC Memberships also in-clude The Angler, our monthly newsletter, and the free fish fry dinner held in October each year. Please either mail your dues to the PAC post office box or bring them to the next meeting. Also, in-clude your email address so The Angler can be emailed to you. Emailing the newsletter saves PAC money and you will receive your newsletter several days sooner. See page 8 for membership form.

In Club Tournament

Brian Hartung is PAC’s Prize Fish Chairman for 2019. More information on in-club tourna-ments and prize fish to follow at the next meet-ing.

SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA

It’s official, we have a new state record swordfish. The standard now is a 466-pounder that was caught by Virginia Beach’s Tony Gower Jr., while fishing on the Rebel with Capt. Randy Butler.

Now that seas have calmed after the passing of Hur-ricane Dorian, late summer, early fall action for

white marlin should go off the charts. Catches already were pretty good prior to the storm and typi-cally things heat up right after one.

Bluewater trollers also were seeing plenty of blue marlin, some sailfish, wahoo, dolphin, scattered tuna and shark.

Deep-droppers are having no trouble finding willing tilefish, grouper and sea bass. Sight-casting for cobia continues to have good results inside the bay and along the coast. Also look for them when you find a school of rays near the surface. Anglers wanting to get in on the action need to hurry since the season closes at midnight Sept. 30.

Red drum are being found throughout the bay and along the coast and that action will continue until colder waters force a southern migration.

Trolling along the Oceanfront south to the state line is still producing good numbers of Spanish mackerel and bluefish, with an increasing number of king mackerel showing.

Ribbonfish numbers are off the charts throughout the southern bay, inside Lynnhaven and along the Oceanfront.

Spot and croaker numbers are good along the southern bay, with some fish also being taken in Lynnhaven Inlet.

Puppy drum and bluefish are being caught in all three southside inlets.

Flounder numbers are decent along the CBBT, at the Hampton Bar and at lots of locations through-out the bay. Look for them also around coastal wrecks, where triggerfish numbers also are good.

Spadefish continue to be caught around the islands of the CBBT and at several navigational struc-tures in the region.

Tarpon should be around for a few more weeks in the backwaters of the Eastern Shore barrier is-lands. Big rays and shark will be willing to play along.

Sheepshead numbers haven’t been that great this year, but some fish continue to be caught along the CBBT.

It’s been a great summer for crabbers and that will be the status quo until waters cool.

July 25th, 2019 Children’s Sunshine Program Ocean View Fishing Pier

By John Meagher and Brenda Goodson

The 2019 program was scheduled to start July 11th this year aboard the Headboat Judith Ann with subse-quent dates of July 18th, July 25th (pier), Aug 1st and Aug 8th. Due to high heat index, the first event was cancelled, but from then on we had great weather, lots of kids and a plethora of fish caught. We are going to tell you a little bit about the pier event to give you an idea of what goes into putting this together. We had over 230 children, 17 volunteers from Dominion Energy, 15 from USS George Washington CVN 73, 10 volunteers from PAC, and 9 guest volunteers. Last but not least were the 3 VMRC Marine Police. Our own Steve York is a member of our club and one of the officers. He had with him fellow officers Casey Springfield and Jackson Goodman. None of this could have gone off as well as it did without the pier man-ager Gene Parker putting up with all of us! We would be remised if we did not mention the director of this program, Denny Dobbins, since 2005 has been coordinating the success of these events and his wife, Car-ol, who is responsible in making sure that food and drinks are provided to everyone. This year we also wel-come Paul Greggs, PAC member and from the Hampton/Newport News Community Service Board Thera-peutic Mentor Program, who did all the organizational coordination. Just to give you an idea of some of those organizations, we had the Portsmouth Sherriff’s Office D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, Portsmouth Police PAL (Police Athletic League) program, the Family Restoration Services Camp, Harbor Point Behavioral Center, Tidewater Youth Service Commission, Lynnhaven Boys’ Home and Westhaven Boys’ Home. These are just some of the organizations that Paul scheduled for all CSP events. For the first time in the last 6 years we had a person dedicated to just taking pictures. Kristy Edwards of

Dominion Energy took over 200 memorable photographs. We cannot begin to tell you how great they are!

The rest of this article will be dedicated to just a few of the pictures that she took. Enjoy!!! We can never

get used to having so many kids smile so much when they catch their (in most cases) first fish. Their

smiles are so rewarding! Can’t wait until we redo our personalized fishing book and “sales” book.

PAC Prize Fish Awards

Did you know that PAC awards monthly certificates and yearly trophies to recognize members’ catches each year? All you need to do is be a PAC member in good standing (dues paid before the date of the catch), and catch an eligible fish. Qualifying catches must meet or exceed 1/2 of cita-tion weight recognized by both North Carolina and Virginia Recreational Fishing Regulations. Once you catch a qualifying fish it must be weighed on a registered scale at an approved State weighing station in either North Carolina or Virginia, fill out the entry form (found at http://portsmouthanglersclub.net/forms/ ) and send it in by the fifth (5th) day of the month following your catch to PAC, P.O. Box 7842, Portsmouth, VA 23707, or turn it in to any member of the Prize Fish Committee. We have release certificates too! So, next fish you catch, remember, it could earn you recognition at the next meeting and annual awards banquet...Turn it in! Complete prize fish rules can be found at http://portsmouthanglersclub.net/prize-fish-2/ .
