TRANSCRIPT
As we begin our 121st year I want to take a minute to look back at our 111th year to express my gratitude to Past Commodore Glenn Michael, Vice Commodore Pat Dowey, Rear Commodore Wes Smith and the Board of Directors for their time and efforts in keeping the traditions of PYC alive. The dedication exhibited by the Past Flags and the Board of Directors is one of the main reasons that PYC functions as well as it does.
Another reason PYC functions as well as it does is due to the many Members who volunteer time and effort on our behalf. In this regard, I am joining our Past Commodores in urging all Members to get involved in making PYC the best it can be. Without our volunteers PYC would not be the great Club that it is. It is a new year. Together we can make it a great one!
On January 25th, PYC had a Special Meeting of the membership that resulted in obtaining the right to fund the replacement of our pier. As of the date of preparation of this PYC Newsletter, we are waiting for bids to come in from marine contractors. We will keep you informed of the progress of our Pier Replacement Project via our Newsletters, our PYC Website and broadcast emails to the membership.

PYC Life Member Norma Roberts passed away on Tuesday, November 20. Norma and her late husband Ken joined the club in 1988. They enjoyed cruising on their sailboat, Eaglet, and were very active in PYC before moving to North Carolina in 2011 to be closer to family.
Jay Edwards passed away peacefully on November 29, 2018. Jay and his wife, Sherle, had recently returned to Florida for the winter season. We will fondly remember Jay having a good time at club activities and piloting his beautiful Sabre named Lady Sherle, especially on PYC cruises. He was the owner and operator of the elegant Edwards Harborside Inn in York Harbor, Maine. Jay joined PYC in 1970 and again in 2009.
PYC Life Member and Past Commodore Fred Pettigrew passed away on Tuesday, Dec 4. Fred and his late wife Carole joined the Portsmouth Yacht Club in 1974, and is the brother-in-law of PYC P/C Art Wright. Our condolences to Fred's son's Jim, John and Dave, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

If you’ve ever thought about hosting an event, opportunity is knocking for the 2019 social season! It’s a great way to meet new people, get involved with your friends, and have some fun while contributing to the Club.
Here are some opportunities for your consideration:
Opening and Closing Dinners; July 4th BBQ; Labor Day Breakfast; 1⁄2 St. Patrick’s Day, and the month of October. I’m happy to report that several new members have volunteered to host upcoming events and other members have taken on past favorites. Take the first step and email me at [email protected]
More Friday night events and more cocktail parties were some of the most popular suggestions on the member survey. A pianist and guitarist have been secured for the four (4) cocktail parties planned on May 31 (New Members), July 12, Aug. 9 and Sept. 6 (Past-Commodores). All events have been added to the PYC website calendar including the five (5) club rentals that are in the works.
Sign-ups for the speaker dinner on March 23rd are underway. Our hosts for the evening are Patty Daly and Roy Briscoe and P/C Chris and Whit Weller. Two of the main researchers on the Living Bridge Project, Erin Bell and Martin Wosnik, will speak about their work on the Memorial Bridge. Go to page 6 for additional information.
Lastly, I want to welcome Frieda Kat as our new Steward. Freida and I have been working on a number of items related to the social aspects of the Club. Look forward to an announcement about the lunch specifics in the near future.

The Living Bridge: The Future of Smart, Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure Imagine a bridge crossing over a tidal estuary, a local landmark that deeply resonates with an entire community; a bridge that is a living laboratory for researchers, engineers, future engineers and the general public. This bridge is instrumented with sensors that capture structural performance, traffic patterns, environmental conditions, the behavior of innovative bridge design elements and enable and promote community engagement. The information collected with these sensors is shared with researchers, bridge designers and the bridge owner, but also, where appropriate, with K-12 classrooms and the public. The bridge sensor network and information communication system will be powered by a locally available renewable energy resource, tidal energy. This bridge has the capability to advance all aspects of community engagement with infrastructure, clean energy
innovation in tidal energy conversion, structural and environmental impact and social perception of our engineered environment. The sensing network, including structural response sensors, underwater instrumentation and cameras, and weather stations, allows for a complete system-based evaluation, including the impact of the tidal turbine. This “smart bridge” provides a platform for continued innovation of sensor, communication and energy technologies. This is the vision behind the Living Bridge project.
Erin Santini Bell is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New Hampshire. Her research is in the area of structural health monitoring including structural modeling, instrumentation, field testing and performance and remaining life prediction.
Martin Wosnik is an Associate Professor in Mechanical and Ocean Engineering and Associate Director of the Center for Ocean Renewable Energy at the University of New Hampshire. His research is in the area of fluid and thermal sciences with an emphasis on the fluid dynamics of renewable energy applications, including marine renewable energy conversion (tidal, wave, offshore wind), turbulent flows, high-speed hydrodynamics and cavitation.
